In this video I show you the installation process of a weather proof RCD protected outdoor electrical lockable double socket using the easiest method (no more tripping over extension leads in and around the house)Connected via a 3 pin 13 amp fused plug.
using 1.5mm flexible 3 core cable.
It is important to ensure any socket installed outside is RCD protected as it could save your life in the event of an accident.
RCD TEST PROCEDURE (taken from operating instruction manual for this model)
Stage1; The RED indicator will normally show in the CLEAR window. If it does not, press RESET (orange) button and the RED indicator should appear.
Stage2; Press the TEST button.
The RED indicator will disappear from the CLEAR window.
DO NOT USE THIS SOCKET IF THE RED INDICATOR REMAINS AND SEEK THE ASSISTANCE OF A QUALIFIED ELECTRICIAN.
Stage3;Press the RESET button.
The RCD has now been set for safe use provided the RED indicator shows in the CLEAR window

I was waiting to see the actual wire-to-socket connections as on mine there are two earth connections.

Would using a 13a plug for the socket instead of hardwiring it into a ring meet building regulation?
@jameshansing5396
@jameshansing5396 6 месяцев назад
it wouldn't really come under building regs.

Do you fit an RCD to an existing RCD as the house ring you plugged into is RCD protected ?

If you noted on the video introduction during the first few minutes i stated the property was on the old style consumer unit using the uprated mini circuit breakers and was not RCD protected hence my reason for selecting an RCD protected outdoor socket.

I’m an amateur, have watched other videos where people had put an extra earth onto the inside of the box is this necessary , Also what thickness wire do you recommend I want to use on of these for led floodlights would I get away with 1.5 the socket info sheet says use 2.5
@kings9634
@kings9634 9 месяцев назад
sockets you should use 2.5 for plus as the load is higher for plus 1 to 1.5 is good for wiring lights

Can I use pliers instead of buying the crimp tool?
@micksmaintenanceanddiy
@micksmaintenanceanddiy 11 месяцев назад
No, definitely not recommended, because they won't create the proper cold weld connection that a crimping tool will and a poor crimp can result in air and moisture getting inside the connection, which can lead the connection to fail.

@@micksmaintenanceanddiy . Okay, thank you for the heads up. I’m only going to need it once but I suppose it would always come in handy having one

You made that installation waterproof, but by drilling out the drain hole, the box no longer has it's IP66 rating.
@jameshansing5396
