In this video Paul shows you how to fit an IP66 rated weatherproof 240V/220V 13A double switched outside socket and wire it yourself.
He followed the instructions supplied with the kit.
The cable is 1.5mm square, twin and earth as normally used in 4 gang extensions leads.
After drilling the back of the casing and feeding the cable through it is then sealed with silicone sealant.
The hole drilled through the brick/block wall was done from the outside, inwards and at a slight angle upwards. When the cable was passed through the hole, it was then sealed with an acid/ammonia free silicone sealant. Please make sure before you drill that there is no pipework or electrics on or in the wall.
The waterproof double outside socket extension cable was fitted with a 3 pin 13A fused plug so it can be plugged in and out as needed.
When in use the cable is plugged into a 2 gang switched fused socket board which is part of a 6mm square T&E spur from the domestic supply in the home protected by a 32A RCD/RCB.
The earth/ground is attached inside to the casing so in the event of water getting inside it will trip the circuit.
If you are not familiar with wiring or electrics then please employ the services of a qualified electrician.
Tools needed.
Tape measure, Marker/Sharpie, Bubble/Spirit level, Hammer, Drill and drill bits, Screwdrivers, Rawl plugs, Screws, Stanley/Box Knife and a length of electric cable.
Think safety. Wear eye and ear protection.
Make sure the electric cable is not live when wiring.
Do not attempt to wire this socket if you are unsure.
Voltages and wiring colours vary from country to country.
The end result is in effect a weatherproof outside extension with a 13A fused plug lead for extra safety.

It may be easy for a qualified electrician to wire a plug but for someone unfamiliar, the wrong advice could lead to injury or worse. How someone wired a UK plug does not apply to all countries as they may use different colours and configuration for their plugs and sockets so that's why we advise following instructions. Shocked that you would think that we are not electric at parties.

Don’t think the caps for the screws are to stop the screws corroding. Maybe more for weatherproofing?
@DrivewayDudes
@DrivewayDudes 6 лет назад
Hi Joshua, We make every effort to answer valid questions. Sometimes we even answer nonsense questions. 1st question. Caps were supplied with the kit so why not use them. They may help deter corrosion or would assist in weatherproofing or maybe they're just for aesthetic reasons. 2nd question. Ask yourself, does water conduct electricity? If the surrounding wall was wet, the outer casing was wet and water found a way inside in a way that may cause a short. Would it not be prudent to follow all safety instructions and protocols to avoid such a scenario and outcome. We are not familiar with NAPIT though from research it appears to be a good training body for those entering the trade skills sector or for those wishing to upgrade or refresh skills. We would like to think that if you've learned anything from NAPIT then first and foremost is safety in the workplace. Paul

Yes, you can buy a complete kit from many building, construction, diy retailers. However, you will still need to drill fixing points including a hole in the wall and some wiring may still be necessary. This is a video detailing how to install an outside weatherproof socket whether you use a kit or seperate parts. The result would be the same. It uses an already installed rcd on the spur (not ring) with the addition of a 13A fused plug (unpluggable and switched) for extra safety

I have already answered this in a previous comment so here goes again. This is in effect an outdoor wall fixed weather proofed extension socket. After fixing it to the wall the casing was sealed with a grommet and silicone. The concrete block hole was drilled inwards and at an upwards angle then sealed again with silicone after the cable was fitted. The 2 metre extension cable is wired with a 3 pin 13A plug that can be plugged in or out of a fused 2 gang switched socket. When plugged in it is connected to a spur which is fed from the domestic home supply that has a 32A RCD.

This is dangerous I'm not an electrician I did one year so i know some basics, I'm pretty sure that's 1mm flex which is definitely not good enough to use, the hole in the back is not water proof ,I'm curious as to what you got the flex connected to on the other side ?? Is it connected to plug that's just in a socket ?
@DrivewayDudes
@DrivewayDudes 4 года назад
Please read the description that accompanies this video. Yes electricity can be dangerous whether you are an electrician or not. We do stress that if you are unsure then you should contract the services of a qualified electrician.
@al45tair
@al45tair 4 года назад
Agreed. Even though he's using a 13A fused plug on the end of it, if he's drawing more than 10 amps across both sockets, that's unsafe, and that's assuming we don't need to de-rate the flex because of whatever the wall is made out of. Personally if I was doing this I'd want to use a 1.5mm flex, and the holes in the back need to be sealed somehow (and maybe a drain hole made to let water out if it does get in there). It might be fine if the fuse in the plug he's using inside is a 6A one, but I'd put money on it being a 13A. Seriously, Driveway Dudes, please get an electrician to take a look at it. They could probably wire it in permanently for you as well, and it won't cost much.
@DrivewayDudes
@DrivewayDudes 4 года назад
@@al45tair Yes, electricity is dangerous. Please read the accompanying description to this video. Safety precautions were taken and explained, in fact we went safer in that we used an additional grounding inside the plastic casing in the event of water ingress. This video was filmed almost 3 years ago and we periodically inspect it externally and internally. The standard inline 13A fuse is of a domestic type typically used in homes for appliances like kettle, toaster, hairdryer, washer, dryer, etc. We have used an electric mower, strimmer, power washer, air compressor and various power tools at different times without any problems. In effect, this is a fixed point 2 gang extension lead. Again we advise that if you are unsure, we suggest you retain the services of a qualified electrician to carry out this fitting/installation.

Hi Bond, We have switched double gang single phase 3 pin UK sockets in the shed. Taking into account the mounting outside we were able to use a 2 metre household T+E extension lead with a 13A plug. With the old socket removed from the lead, fed through the drilled hole and wired to the weatherproof unit. It was just a case of simply plugging it into the existing socket inside the shed and switching it on or off. Alternatively it can be unplugged when not in use similar to what you would do with an electrical appliance in the home. What we did is perfectly safe in that we were never at risk of coming into contact with live wiring and risk electric shock. You could probably have an electrician wire it in permanently but that would defeat the purpose of DIY Hope this helps. Paul 👍

Ive got a box like this to fit. I read that you shouldnt wire a box like this in from the back because it gives a way for water to get into the box and you should always go from below. Wondering if you had any views on that?
@DrivewayDudes
@DrivewayDudes 6 лет назад
Fitting instructions supplied show you can wire it through the back. You can also go from below if you prefer but try to make sure you seal it so no water or moisture can get in. Also take into consideration that you may have exposed cable underneath so you may need to fit a trunking/conduit and weatherproof it. When drilling the wall, if from outside inwards then drill at an angle upwards. That way it prevents water travelling into the wall. Again seal the hole as best you can. Since I fitted this there has been heavy rains, snow and freezing. No water or moisture has entered the box. For safety reasons it is 13A fuse protected and is wired to a spur with RCD/RCCB. Also when not in use I cut the power to it from the main switched socket in my shed. Hope this answers your question. Driveway Dudes - Paul

Thanks, I had to put my order for the missing bits this morning and I decided to go through the bottom as I was worried about getting a flush fitting against the brick and didnt want to mess with silicon. I ordered some 1.5mm Hi Tuff cable which I believe should be OK for outdoor use. I thought 2.5mm or armored cable was a bit overkill for this use seeing as its such a short run. I ordered a weatherproof gland and an RCD at the same time
@DrivewayDudes

2.5mm T&E is the standard for single and double sockets unless you are going to put it under a heavier load. Personally I would not consider 1.5 for anything more than lighting.
@Ironbuket
@Ironbuket 6 лет назад
According to my supplier: 3 core 1.5mm cable is rated for 15A 3600W 3 core 2.5mm cable is rated for 24A 4800W I did read 2.5 was recommended if you are using a double socket and would be using both sockets with high power equipment at once, so I can see how regs might recommend that. However, I wont be running anything more than a lawnmower or a pressure washer and not both at once. Im connecting via a socket RCD and not directly conncted to the mains and seeing as my RCD is only rated for 13A the RCD would trip before the cable would melt anyway? The ready made double socket kits on ebay and amazon come with 1.25mm cable and I doubt they are even upgraded for outdoor use. I would have gone to 2.5 as you suggested (just to be safe), but the fact that Hi Tuff 2.5 cable was a big jump in price put me off. I would have even gone to armored cable, but I dont think it would have bent for a bottom box entry which is what Im planning for. I know it is not professional grade, but it's better than the online kits so at least it's upgraded a little over what most people would have. If I wanted professional grade I would have wired it direct to the house at probably 5 times the cost :)

We take safety very seriously and would never make a video if we thought there was a risk of harm. In our description we say 'This video is for guide purposes'. We do not say that this is the way it should be done. If a person has waterproofing grommets or another product that they wish to use then that is entirely up to that individual. We agree that the warranty would be void if the unit was modified or changed in any way. The casing was pre drilled at point of manufacture. We pinned it to the wall using the pre-drilled holes and applied waterproof silicone sealant as added protection. Over the course of almost two years with varying conditions including heat and minus temperatures, dry and wet weather, we have periodically inspected it and found it to be 100% dry inside and with no visible sign of corrosion in any way. It is still working today as it was when it was first fitted.

I would advise a service loop inside the box
@DrivewayDudes

Good advice but on a 2 metre extension lead of which 300 cm of that is slack that could serve as the service loop. If it was a permanent hardwire then yes, we would have left some but not necessary this way. Paul

As an electrical engineer I would strongly advise NOT following this video as it does not comply with with current regulations in many respects making such an installation potentially DANGEROUS

No rcd no grommet no seal around the box as it was mounted on an un even surface but a great video how to fix a box on the wall 👍🏼

You have missed drilling a drain hole with a 5mm drill bit. Putting a earth link from the socket to the back box is pointless as the box is plastic. You should also always drill from outside in at a bit of an angle to stop water going through the hole drilled

Are you still alive? Those instructions you claim to have followed clearly instruct you to seal the cable entry if you use the rear entry point and on that uneven surface you've attached to it is really important. You are also instructed to drill out the lower drain point.

Yes and thanks for your interest in our health and wellbeing. We have used it many times in both good and bad weather. It is completely dry inside, not even a hint of dampness, moisture or corrosion. This is a video showing that you can install this yourself with a few tools. We do stress that you follow the instructions included but if you feel you would not be able to do this then please seek the assistance of a qualified electrical contractor.

@@DrivewayDudes thank you for a very useful video Tho whilst I wish to attach mine to brick wall, which should be more flush than the surface you used.. what 'sealant' would you recommend for around the entry cable area AND when to apply it (I assume after having attached the wires so you can pull back any excess first?)? Also, do you recommend applying any of same sealant around the outside of the box once fitted for added protection? Thanks

6 square twin n earth spurred socket in the shed. The weather proof socket using a fused 13A extension lead that can be plugged in and out as needed

using the 2.5 & earth I would have put in a switched fused outlet from the spur & that leaves all the sockets free ,so no need to unplug outside sockets & inner sockets free.why unplug outside socket just isolate switched fused outlet

I think you miss the purpose of this video. It's designed so that anyone can do it. You don't need to be an electrician as it is in principal an extension lead nor does it need to be inspected or signed off by a certified electrical contractor

Not at all. This is basically just a switched, fused and pluggable/unpluggable extension lead fixed to a wall. This we hope is an easy to follow instructional video to show that anyone can do it with a few basic diy tools. There is no risk of electrical shock as it is not hardwired to the mains supply. If you were to directly hardwire and you were unsure how to proceed then it would be recommended that you seek the assistance of a domestic electrical contractor

@DrivewayDudes

Connecting the earth/ground to the plastic casing is a safety feature (contained in the instruction leaflet) in the event that water gets into the casing.

1. Could you not be fucked seal or grommet the cable entry? 2. Why did you earth the box?
@TheMartyJD
@TheMartyJD 6 лет назад
After seeing the video, went and bought the same unit. According to the installation guide, if using side, top or rear entry, the lower drain hole MUST be drilled out using a 5mm bit. You didn't do this.
@DrivewayDudes
@DrivewayDudes 6 лет назад
Hi Martin, I have drilled/put 5 holes in the unit, 1 at each corner for the screws and 1 centred for rear cable entry point. They thus become drain holes. In addition I used an earth/ground cable on the plastic casing as an extra safety feature. The manufacturer has it IP66 rated but if you start drilling more holes in it then the rating would not apply.
@iamlee42
@iamlee42 5 лет назад
You should always drill the drain hole at the bottom of the fitting to allow water out. In summer you will find it will build up with condensation. The extra earth lead is pointless as it's a plastic box so it serves no purpose

Your power lights are flicking and you have not used a socket tester you could have reverse polarity and you wouldn't know. Have you even tested the rcd tripping time at the board to make sure it works in the event of circuit imbalance??
@hughhennessy7912

@@Mark-ij2nh The flickering I presume is how the camera is picking it up. This video is made in Ireland - which predominately uses radial circuits rather ring final - in domestic installations.

All good kits come with wiring diagrams and instructions. Did you read the part 'He followed the instructions supplied with the kit' and 'Voltages and wiring colours vary from country to country'? Why would he give wiring instructions that may not apply to another kit that may be in another country where the wiring colours and voltages differ. He also advises and recommends that if you are unsure then do not attempt this but rather contract the services of someone qualified
