installing an Iron Bull ROPS & canopy on the International 656 tractor

The International 656 is sorely in need of a new ROPS and canopy and I am in luck, because Iron Bull had a free shipping special! In this video I install the new ROPS (rollover protection system) and canopy, and show how the Iron Bull unit is constructed. It was made in the USA, looks pretty close to factory original, and is very well built.

Hey Pete. This is the 2nd. time I've seen the wrench on wrench leverage bar. The things I learn from watching farmers videos. Thanks again Pete.
@AtomicReverend
@AtomicReverend 3 года назад
This is a great mechanic trick just don't do it on a questionable quality wrench! This is from personal experience. I have turned a wrench off and on for a living for the last 20 years and have owed/restored at least 3 dozen cars. This leverage trick is an effective way to roughly double the length of your wrench handle but a puts a lot of strain on the jaw of the wrench (the same one that the box end is on the bolt), if you're using a USA, Japan or German (or other nation known for quality manufacturing and great steel) you will more then likely be fine but some of the wreches that come out of India or China or Taiwan I don't recommend it. You put so much stress on the ear (jaw) of the wrench it can literally snap off and it will send pieces of the wrench flying at you or as it did me send you flying across the garage into a floor jack that was not properly put up. I have a 4 stitch scar in my hairline proving that this isn't a good practice lol Now that being said I am a hard learner and I still do it but now my wrenches are higher quality and I am getting a bit old to literally jump on them to bust rusty bolts loose.

I was watching your video yesterday as you were bailing hay. I was admiring your canopy . My canopy was home built by the previous owner out of 1 1/2 angle iron. This morning I was on line looking at canopies and ran across this video of you installing your new canopy. Thanks so much for making this video. I just started to watch your channel 6 months ago, I watch every video.

I liked to part about the doubled up end wrenches...I find myself most often going for end wrenches before a ratchet and socket and often before I go for a breaker bar. I think partly because it skips the assembly part, less steps to use it! A super simple and very effective tool.

I had a canopy made for mine at a local welding shop . After putting it on it had a lot of vibration noise , so I bought some sound deadning tape used for car stereo systems , and installed it on the underneath side of the canopy . It took all that noise away . Just a tip if that is the bulk of the noise .

The ROPS's are nice as long as you have doors high enough to let them through. And the big plus is they really do keep the sun, rain and that white fluffy stuff off on you while your working. As for safety, you never know, it might hale 3/4" nuggets tomorrow. 8-)

Hey Pete, Not sure if you have seen them but they sell a kit to be able to use any skid steer attachment (like a pallet fork) on your tractor loader. Even comes with the brackets to add the mounting plate on the old bucket so you don't have to buy a new one.

My brother was killed on a tractor like yours, what happened was he was traveling on a 4 lane road and a car hit him from the rear and he flew off hitting his head. He had no ROPS on the tractor so there was no seat belt, so you might want to rethink the belt and maybe only wear it when on the road. Just a thought.

HI there Pete. Mate, yiu did an awesome job figuring out how to mount it corrdctly. It looks like a great product let down by poor instructions. I wonder if they had some vetter instructions that are downloadable off their website? I dont know what your UV ratings are like in Summer. But, if it is anything like New Zealand this canopy could save you from getting skin cancer. Or, at the very least...roasted like a marshmallow!

Pete I've got a question for you: why do some old American tractors have a "single" front wheel right at the center of the tractor? (Like your Farmall H) I don't recall ever seeing that on old European tractors so I would like to know why that setup was used over there in the US.
@JustaFewAcresFarm
@JustaFewAcresFarm 3 года назад
Hi Michele, narrow fronts were good for cultivating row crops like corn. It was easier to keep the front tire between the rows, and they could make tight turns at the end of the rows.

Pete: I really enjoyed this video. Your explanation of how to install the ROPS, is fabulous . I had no idea it is as complex as it is. I have a Farmall 656 Hydro also (I love the tractor) and noticed that yours has a handle on the left hand side to assist in climbing onto the tractor. I found that it would be a good thing to have this handle as I have only the ridge in the center of the hood to hang onto when mounting. Did yours come with this handle or did you have to buy one? I found the part number; 396998R1 and learned that it is an obsolete part. I am looking for one, Bates Corp sells a replacement for $100, so I would like to find a cheaper part. Thanks
@JustaFewAcresFarm
@JustaFewAcresFarm 3 года назад
Hi Mark, I think the main purpose of the "handle" by the speed control lever is to help keep people from accidentally knocking the lever when getting on & off the tractor. But it works great as a handle when climbing on too! I've bought from Bates before, and I'm not surprised at the price (but they provide excellent service). Sometimes I can find things like that cheaper on Ebay.
