Well, well, well, how clever is that. Great work Stan, bloody GOOD work! I did a 440 meter building (that is 1600 meters of skirting) at my home using the method where I cut the straight edge of the skirting at an inward angle with the power saw, and then simply used the coping saw to cut around the edge of the curved top corner. Very simple, very clean. But having seen the saw in use, I'm sold. You bet.

Great tutorial! I am remodeling a 55 year old ranch and there is not a square corner in it. This made the coping process easy, practiced on 1/2 a dozen copes before beginning the actual project. I am not up to varnish quality yet but I'll keep practicing.

I coped some crown a few years back using a 20 year old cheap jig saw and Gary's DVD. As I approached close to the line I used a Dremel with a sanding drum. It came out great. Now I am have a barrel saw with a Collins Coping Foor and am going to run a couple hundred feet of BB.

Bosch also makes a "barrel grip" saw that works quite well for coping. Collins coping foot on the saw, Bosch #T119BO or equivalent blade, combination file (course & fine) & a rat tail file for fine tuning on stain grade trim. Works great for me, just my 2 cents worth of opinion. Thanks Gary K. for your videos & various tips & techniques.

It works well if you’re coping in a shop or outside but working in a customer’s home, yeah I just use a barrel grip jigsaw with a fine tooth blade and regular foot. The time you save walking outside is much more than what the grinder will save you.

Is this hard to do with a regular jig. I don't have $3000 for a Festool. I usually use my table saw for my speed copes.
@statelypenguin
@statelypenguin 9 лет назад
I took the base off my jigsaw and did it without the coping foot. It would have been easier with the foot because you can slide the foot around on the board, but it worked. The foot is only $30 or something like that, so I might get one anyway. I have a Festool jigsaw (which is awesome) and it wasn't too much. It's probably the most affordable Festool product you can buy.

@lyndonwhitson2269
@lyndonwhitson2269 5 лет назад
Annony Mouse only would work for short pieces, lots of times it’s 16ft. Just get a coping saw and a pack of blades. Just lay the cut back about 20 to 30 degrees leaving the line and a little trimming with your knife to clean it up. Another secret on most base the flat part can be done on your miter saw set at a slight angle just leaving the top to cope by hand.

@whatfreedom7
@whatfreedom7 7 лет назад
I have a odd cut I'm not having any luck with and yes I'm inexperienced but I'm trying to learn. I'm trying to cope cut the baseboard which will be butted up against a cabinet toe kick which has some decent curves to it. I can't trace the side I'm installing on so I traced the opposite side on the left on the back side of a scrap piece of baseboard. My issue is when I cut it with my coping saw the curves don't quite line up even though it's traced perfectly and I'm cutting on the line. It's almost like it's shifting the curves vertically a little and then it won't sit flush and leaves about a 1/8" gap. Is their a trick to this type of cut? I thought surely I could just trace it and cut it but it's not working. I wasn't cutting my trim at 45degree first but is that required if your not mating the same two pieces of trim?
@ammerconsulting
@ammerconsulting 5 лет назад
Tracing will make you add or subtract material depending on how you do it. A better option is to learn how to scribe the cut using a small compass.

If you are doing paint grade work, cutting the tip off square is OK. If you are doing stain grade work, that little tip allows the corner to look as if it was mitered. It's a delicate cut and only the very best trim carpenters are able to pull it off. Can't tell you how many times I had to recut a coped joint on stained material because I accidentally broke off that little tip, but in the end, it was worth it for my customer's satisfaction and my own.
@HFRajuncajun

Bill Ammer very true. A lot of times many people forget about stain grade work. Even paint grade shows that small detail depending on the finisher (brushed or sprayed).

Old fashioned and tedious. Nobody installs base like this anymore, you'd get some crazy looks if ppl saw you doing this on my jobsite, I'd be done and on my next job by the time you got done with your inside corners.
@HFRajuncajun
@HFRajuncajun 5 лет назад
lastditch727 for mass produced homes, you’re absolutely correct. But for anything stain grade or you are doing the finishing yourself. This will end up saving you way more time in the end. If someone else is painting/finishing, I would agree. 45 degree inside corners just never look good on anything other than virtually flat stock mouldings.
