You need to out a clear coat on that floor or it will get messed up. Also, when you put the clear coat on, you need to sprinkle aluminum oxide all over the floor. It makes the floor stronger and it helps with traction because you will slip on that floor if there is water on it. I do this as my job, please take my advice! The clear coat is much needed!!!

Thanks for the info! Any product recommendation for the clear coat? Can you apply directly on the current surface or do you need to sand it? Mahalos!

LONESTAR HAWAIIAN we use general polymers epoxy, as the rock solid crap is not the best epoxy, all though putting a general polymers clear coat on top would greatly improve the floor, (there will be a part a and a part b)it gives it a glossy look, this will also be the time to sprinkle aluminum oxide on the floor, you want to roll back over the aluminum oxide so that it gets fully covered by the epoxy, i also recommend squeegeeing the epoxy out before rolling. Use a cheap 2 dollar paint brush and use it on the walls to make sure the coating gets onto all of the floor. Mix the epoxy very well (we use a drill with a mixing paddle). If you want to get fancy and make the floor pop a little more you could even add in a little glitter so when the sunshine hits it it really comes to life. Contact rustoleum and ask what the timeframe is of when you can still put a clear coat on the floor( some floors cant take another coat after a certain time as the epoxy simply wont bond) if you need me to clarify anything shoot me a message!

This floor is probably start peeling soon. You have to acid etch the concrete. Those white bags that you said it was sand is actually concrete etch.

Id like to point out that the "salt" is actually the etching solution that you use before painting. I would highly recommend anyone who is planning to do any floor painting to etch their concrete it will give you a longer life out of your floor. Also a foam roller or just a higher quality non-shed roller would help.
@jetcontracting4244

Wash the cover first! Most of the new /loose fibers will be removed prior to application. If you get a “cooked”(the product has begun to cure on the cover while applying)replace with new cover. If you keep the cover activated with new product, meaning you are moving quickly it should remain pliable. Etching the surface is definitely a must (chemically or manually via a diamond type grinder) on smooth/any surfaces for proper bond FOR SURE!! You also need to have the surface super clean (simply green)or you will have “fisheyes”, grease, oil, wax, or any other contaminants will produce non uniformed results.

Those are not bags of salt or non-slip additive. It's actually acid, that you were supposed to mix with water, and use it to etch the concrete.

After completing my garage floor I wish this video came out before I started back in October. Mine is a little different because Rustolium recommend I lay down black first to act as a primer and help the silver bullet colors pop. It looks great but even after hours and hours of RU-vid university, days of careful planing, and meticulous prep work - still - errors and heart aches. But overall I’m happy with my DYI. This project is not too difficult. It really takes a lot of time and a ton of patience if you want it to last and not look like and embarrassing attempt. Realizing that you’ll end up spending almost twice as much as you think you will. Buying extra cutting brushes, better quality rollers, and nearly everything you use will be thrown out because after each batch the epoxy will set up and harden on paint brushes and rollers. I used a lot of mineral spirit cleaner. Quality gloves, full body painters suit and shoe covers to prevent my clothes being destroyed and plastic painters sheets on all work surfaces. When they say keep a wet edge... yes once it dries and the metallic settles you will see where you let spots dry before continuing and refrain from correcting mistakes as they might make bigger mistakes. So plan on devoting most of a day to laying out the material. I also bought bug killer and deet bug spray to try and deter bugs from wandering in.

16:50 you say that is the non slip additive... if your kits is like mine. That is the concrete etching mix that is supposed to go on the concrete prior to the install to allow the poly to adhere and penetrate the floor better. Being that you ground the surface you should be okay though. Either way, looks great and I hop it holds up well!!

Nice job. I did the gray with black, silver and white chips. I did 1 coat with just the "apoxy", then a day later a second coat. You're right, my 2nd clar made a difference. I also cleared over it all. The solid color kits with chips come with black foam rollers and they are sh*t too. It unraveled and chucks started coming off. I picked up most of it, what I could. The chips hide the rest. I bought a couple Purdee 1/4" nap rollers for polyurethane and smooth surfaces and that worked pretty well.

Another video I saw, the guy used painters tape to wrap the rollers completely that way it took off any extra fibers that are loose. Also you’ll want a clear coat . The guy also used metal cleats while laying the expoxy to avoid prints. Also having your dad mix when you’re almost done with the one mix is helpful in keeping the epoxy edge from drying

A trick I used when I painted and coated with FBE was to take blue painters tape and cover the roller then immediately pull the tape off. This helped with the fuzzies in the paint and epoxy. It didn't get rid of everything but a good chunk of the problem was gone.

Nice silver, try acid wash, rinse with water pressure, let dry. Mix 2-3 colors with 2-car garage I used total 6 kits. Mix each color in 5gal buckets with speed bit then hustle fast cover fast, use a large squeegee swirl your colors using a foam roller to finish the design. Started in-home 1000sq ft area sets up nice with heat lamps..Again, hustle fast before it sets up..Not bad for single color first time. I did use cleats inside only to strip tape and touch up.

I used this stuff on a bathroom floor. Looks great and is a bit on the slippery side, but not terrible. That being said, the only reason I ever considered it is because I got it for free. Apparently the reviews online have been so bad that Rustoleum worked with Lowe's to distribute free product to get people to write better reviews on it to counteract the bad ones out there. They did this by sending FOUR kits to folks for a two car garage, ensuring you had more than enough to use. I don't know, but I would be curious if this guy got these kits for free, because 9 kits is way overkill for what they recommend, and at $169 each, that's pushing $2K with tax for that many kits. And at that kind of cost around here you can have professionals come do your garage with pro grade materials. Anyway, I only needed one kit for a super thick coat on a guest bathroom floor and am happy enough with the result. If you use the acid etch on your concrete, ensure you get EVERY last bit of it off before starting or you'll end up with bubble pits in your final finish.

@MrCustomConcrete
@MrCustomConcrete 4 года назад
I think your floor turned out pretty good all things considered, but definitely some big mistakes in the process, the 5 MAIN issues one of which you already have realized which is #1 your ROLLERS, you should have used Mohair rollers or a more quality roller, THEN de-shed the roller AND change the roller out more often, also you should move your material first, a magic trowel or sqeegee when applied, then use your roller, preparation when doing Epoxy along with the right material and tools is key! #2 Diamond Grind your concrete, light sanding will not cut it. Prepping the floor the correct way is essential for a long lasting problem free floor. Grinding does a couple of things it insures that you have removed anything from the surface that isn't concrete, sealers, paint, drywall mud ect... You get the picture and it opens the pours of the concrete to allow the material to wick down into the pours of the concrete which helps strengthin the bond between your concrete and your Epoxy coating. #3 A better quality product and a 2 part product mixed vat a 2 to 1 ratio. #4 you should have applied a Base coat of epoxy first, then within a 24hr window came back with your money coat. #5 You NEED a Top coat over the Epoxy, I use a water based urethane, it goes on milky and thin but dries glossy and clear, a Top Coat is a MUST HAVE to protect the Epoxy from Ambering (yellowing out), and urethane is tuff as nails. BUT it should be applied with a 24hour time frame, you can however still give it a coat you just need to lightly sand your entire floor first. I recommend 2 coats of of Urethane. Other than that some other miner mistakes, but ya don't know what ya don't know. Pro Tip for ya: If it we're me, I'd go back in, sand down the entire floor which will also eliminate all your roller junk (that's a plus) 👍, use about 6 mohair rollers 3 rollers per coat, (2 coats) get some football cleats so you can step into your urethane because you will need to crosshatch your urethane and sometimes you have to step into it, work in small 10x10 blocks as you work the floor, and you need to use a paint tray to dip and roll your urethane...other than that your floor looks nice! Hope that helps, if you have any questions hit me up!
