Installing NEW BLADE SKIN for CAT 815 Soil Compactor | Plasma Cutting & Welding

Watch how we fit and install a new skin for a Caterpillar 815F Soil Compactor blade. The blade has started to wear out and has a hole on the end so we show the step by step process to fit and install a new skin. First, we need to remove the cutting edges before we cut the new skin from high tensile plate using the plasma cutter. We then fit the skin to the blade but the profile isn’t right so it needs to be pulled into shop and tack welded in place before fully welding the skin to the blade. A layer of hardfacing wire is welded to the bottom edge to give it a longer life before the cutting edges are fitted back on to complete the job.
In this video we are using:
- Lincoln Electric DC-400 Welder
- Lincoln LN-25 Pro Wire Feeder
- UniMig Razorcut 45 Plasma Cutter
- WIA 500i Weldmatic welder

Question for Karen: Were you some kind of professional before or you developed your filming and editing skills since becoming a RU-vidr? Love your edits, perfect use of fast forwarding, excellent close ups and great before and after shots just to mention a few. Love the way you insert Homeless in the middle of each video. It's like just a quick relaxing break between serious work. Videos wouldn't be half as good without you.

One of her talents is in "following the story." In essence, knowing what the audience wants to see. The close-ups being key to this. What's the info on the gas bottles, the face of the MIG welders, what the lathe tooling does exactly (love the chips!). It's like she knows this intuitively. We get to see it all and learn. Bravo to Karen! - Joe in Seattle.

Hey thanks for the question! I'm 100% self taught with the filming and editing have no professional experience. I definitely like to keep the viewers point of view in mind when creating content and would agree I have an intuitive approach to what gets put on the screen. I enjoy creating the videos and really appreciate when our viewers enjoy what they watch 🥰 Karen

A lot of the information and close ups come about as a result of Kurtis and Karen responding to viewer requests. This is one of the advantages of RU-vid channels in that it is a two way relationship between the content creators and the viewers and in particular the subscribers and where applicable the Patreons. Great engineering content Kurtis & Karen. Those Wagtails have good reason to be defensive as the Butcher bird is aptly named and will “take out” the little ones as they hatch. Man, it really grinds my gears when a customer gives a worker a dirty part. I got called out on this years ago and i felt my ears go red. He wasn't even scolding me, he just said, 'next time, please clean it'. It's not the repairman's job to clean your part, it's yours.

FYI when a breaker comes from the factory it will trip out at exactly the predicted value. For a 15 amp breaker, it will trip out at 12 amps (80% safety factor). But once it trips out, the values change and there is no guarantee it will trip out at the predicted value. It may be 11 amps, it may be 13 or something else.

Great job guys, it’s nice to hear Karen laughing. With all that welding I reckon you’ve got your eye in now😂. Why are you getting slag coming off the welds as I’ve never seen that with a mig? One thing’s for sure, that magpie will never swoop you now and they have an amazing memory. I occasionally feed my local magpies a bit of raw meat and while they’re busy swooping other people I sometimes feel like Jesus because I can walk down the street totally untouched. They might sing to me but they never swoop. Cheers Stuart, Canberra.

Age old story. Equipment designed for low price and max work that is pushed beyond the limit. The mounting frame for the blade being bent is a sure sign of overload like you said. I worked for a company that made Cat parts. We built to print and still had problems with making everything exact. Lots of weld and steel sections with hundreds of braces on them. The prints had tolerancing that allowed for backers on welds so the large gaps could be filled. On the mainframe for the M24 Grader, over the length of that huge beam made from 1" plate the welds would lift the end of the fixturing off the floor. Once it was welded and removed from the fixture it wouldn't go back in. We bid against several other companies in the US and Mexico for Cat components. The various pieces and parts varied considerably depending on who made the parts and where they were made.

@SeanBZA

Well, out in use any that are not tight tend to vanish. Plus not much water there, all of which lead to rusty nuts. Those that do not want to move with the impact will, in some way or the other, yield to the socket, strong bar and the 6m length of cheater pipe. Otherwise there is the plasma cutter there to do the removal. Come off nicely or come off in pieces, but will come off.

The little things like the quality of your torchwork, weld beads and the attention to tidying up as you work are those things that make a quality journeyman such as yourself. I have a mobile elevated work platform (wheelbarrow) that has a slot in 1 corner approximately the width of a 8" TCT circular saw blade. I may have gotten overly ambitious cutting up some timber. If I had an apprentice I could/would blame him. :D Awesome seeing you interacting with the wildlife and getting them so friendly that they will eat from your hand. Possibly worth investing in some meal worms or something like that as birds shouldn't eat much in the way of hoooman food.
