Installing New Stairs On A Budget - On The Job Episode: 1
In this video, we take you step by step through the process of installing new risers and new treads. This is a quick, inexpensive way to give your stairs an updated makeover, get rid of that carpet and create a beautiful wood staircase. Join us as I take you "ON THE JOB".
We started by going to Home Depot to buy the materials for our project: treads, risers, and cove molding.
Using the 1 inch pine treads instead of the oak ones saved us almost $20 per step and by using a shelf ripped in half we were able to save as well. It was basically buy one get one free.
When attaching the risers and tread we try to use as little nails as possible. The glue will do most of the work. but we are tacking the riser with 1 1/2" 18 gauge brad nails and the tread with 2 1/2 16 gauge brad nails. We also used PL construction adhesive on both the treads and risers. Thanks for being here with me. Please leave your questions in the comments and I will see you on the next one!

Wow, your treads and risers came off easier than mine!! Mine were recessed into the stringers under the trim side boards!!I had to remove the back side drywall to even get to them and had to remove all the wedge's to get them out. I wish mine had a center stringer - better support!! Great job!!

I just did a set of stairs. I used the expensive oak retrofit treads. $50 a stair. I pulled as many staples as I could and then just hammered in the rest. So much work. I was curious when you measured and decided you needed to remove the treads, wouldn’t only the first step be a little taller? After that they would all be the same height.
@YOUFLOOR
@YOUFLOOR 2 года назад
Yes you are correct. And the top step would be a little shorter. I dont know about anyone else. But I tend to fall going up the steps. So that 1st step is important to me. Also I'm not gonna let someone with a tape measure come and measure my 1st step and say." Theses steps are out of code ha ha" I felt that y o ly adjusting the height would keep me with in code at the top and the bottom. Great question. Thanks for the comment

Beautiful work! How to do the 1st stair that stick out both left and right?
@YOUFLOOR
@YOUFLOOR 3 года назад
They make them with a return on one side. Or you could you a round over bit on a router with a little sanding. This will also work for double open sides.hope that helps. Thanks for the question

After removing the carpet, can you remove all the staples/nails and stain the existing threads and riser. Thanks
@YOUFLOOR
@YOUFLOOR Год назад
You can if your steps are in good condition. You may have gaps on the sides. Also depending on weather you have pre-built stairs or hand built out of 2x12s. But I have sean it done before. Thanks for the question

Hi, my old stair has a slight curvature in the middle of the right and left side of all the treads, what is the best way to cut the new treads? Cut them perfectly square and then fill the gap with some putty (but maybe this could be too much..) or cut the treads out of square to cover as much as possible the front side and fill the back side? (where there are the risers that cover some gap..). Is there any other way? Thank for your help.

I'm about to do a job just like this, what did you charge to do this?
@YOUFLOOR
@YOUFLOOR 2 года назад
Well that depends on how much you have to do. If you are tearing out carpet and removing all the staples, that is time consuming. Plus if you are buying the treads and the stain and doing multiple trial and error until you get the perfect match is also time consuming. If I come in and there is no tear out and the steps are prestained, I can get away with around $50.00 per step. But with all I explained above, it is usually around $75.00 to $100.00 per step. I Know that sounds like a lot but it really is fair. If you google how much to charge for stair redo. You will find anywhere from a couple grand to $7,000.000. Hope that helps. Great question
