Installing OXYGEN in my SR22

Putting an Oxygen system into EYZ so I can fly above 10,000 feet in Australia. Watch us filling the tank, installing the system, testing it on the ground, plus some other updates I've made for recording audio and video in the Cirrus SR22. Thanks to Steven at Blue Demon Aviation for helping with the installation and for persevering when that bit to put the tank on the back of the seat took WAY longer than it should. It was really tricky though, those straps were hard to tighten and it honestly was very complicated. Either that or we were just really bad at it. Probably the latter.
Oxygen usage and requirements vary across different regions so please check your local regulations before considering or using oxygen. Also be sure to have a thorough briefing with a licensed aircraft engineer about the dangers of handling and carrying oxygen in flight.

Hey Stef: put a drop of thread lock on the ND filter: I had a GP mounted on motorbike for a shoot, the filter unscrewed with the vibrations, almost lost it

G'day Stefan, Pro-tip: use a fabric softener bottle for pee-bottle. Larger opening, handle for easy grasp, not seethrough, and pleasant smelling.

oxygen is flammable? me thinks not. Oxygen helps things burn
@Kieran7931
@Kieran7931 4 года назад
More or less. It's not flammable in of itself by itself, but there are several references to it being flammable in safety documents, primarily if in contact with certain substances (of which oxygen can cause them to combust), or, naturally, in contact with fire. Per BOC Gasses (provider of medical oxygen amongst other gasses) they have Oxygen listed with a hazard category of "H270 May cause or intensify fire; oxidizer". They also state "5.2 Special hazards arising from the substance or mixture Non flammable - oxidising agent. Supports combustion and may cause fire/explosion in contact with incompatible substances, strong acids, reducing agents, combustibles and flammables. Materials which burn in air, will burn more vigorously in oxygen enriched atmospheres" Per CASA, oxygen is listed as a Class 2, Division 2.2 hazardous material "non-flammable, non-toxic gases i.e. oxygen, liquid nitrogen, compressed air"

@Nijapoop
@Nijapoop 5 лет назад
He literally said in the video that it is a CASA requirement that he has oxygen supply when flying above 10000ft and it is there if he needs to climb above that to avoid weather or icing conditions
@elliottwilford6457
@elliottwilford6457 5 лет назад
alex llewellyn I do appreciate what he said but still it’s a bit OTT don’t you think? They did also mention how oxygen is highly flammable when compressed so why add extra stress
@Nijapoop
@Nijapoop 5 лет назад
The tanks they use will be able to withstand extreme pressures. they just take safety measures filling the tank as it can cause stress on the tank if you fill it too fast. Just like equalisation with your ears when climbing if you climb too fast your ears can be in a lot of pain but if you slowly climb you body has time to adjust to the pressure changes.

Just curious stefan, what is the weight of that gear and does it in anyway alter the CG where it is locatedor give you some sort of W&B penalty? Good idea though as you say it gives you an option if required. Finally i have to ask what did that set you back to purchase & install as O2 is not cheap. We were told that to service one our crew bottles was around £400 a shot depending on the company that made them. Look forward to the flight test.
@StefanDrury
@StefanDrury 5 лет назад
Thanks Sean, the weight is negligible - around 3Kg all up and all mounted to the co-pilot seat for any weight and balance calculations. I put a package together with a few additional items, but for that size bottle (14 cu ft) I'd estimate around AUD$2K for the system. You can do it cheaper with smaller bottles and without the EDS demand conserver and boom cannula. So it doesn't have to be that much.
@seanmcerlean
@seanmcerlean 5 лет назад
@@StefanDrury thanks for that.So it is more of an emergency system to keep.you out of trouble and get you home rather than something for sustained flight above FL100.Interesting that a company have come up with this for us in GA despite the fact as you say most of us do.not go as high as that for long lengths of time.It will certainly allow flight over terrain we would normally avoid or potentially helping bush pilots up in Alaska and the like.

Hey Stefan that buzzing sounds like a cooling fan scraping one of the metal protecting tabs (the ones preventing things to touch the blades) at the back of the pfd / gdu Check if they are bent inwards if they are not, the fan is out of balance or the bearings are shot, a replacement fan should not be too expensive.

Good video, as always. One thing that I might suggest for your cockpit audio is to normalize it before importing it into your video project. Also, if ATC or passenger audio levels differ a lot from your own mic audio, you might want to try some compression to bring the quieter levels up vs the loudest ones.

cirrus needs to make a twin piston like a diamond da 60 but do a pressurized cabin! that small bottle would last 2 ppl 5 mins at 22,000 feet. id have 2 bottles on for passenger and 1 for pilot
@StefanDrury
@StefanDrury 5 лет назад
Thanks Jack, the 14 cu ft cylinder I showed would last slightly more than 5 minutes. It's rated at 4 hours at 25,000 feet, but it's really not optimised for usage at that level. For my (and other people purchasing this system) typical usage, at 15,000 feet I can get 12.3 hours constant use with the EDS system. So for 2 people, that would be over 6 hours, plenty for a typical flight.

Great that you can get decent cruise power on a non-turbo'd engine above 10,000ft. My Glasair was gasping for breath at around 11,500 - but then it was only an O-320, not an IO-550 like yours.
