Installing USB power, stem mount quad lock charger and gear indicator on the Ninja 1000

With covid lockdowns and shipping holding up the KZ750 budget cafe build, I'm getting some modifications done on the Ninja 1000 sport touring bike. I'm preparing this motorcycle to do some touring over the summer and wanted to make sure I could charge my GPS/phone as well as some camera batteries while I'm on the road.
I also wanted to put a gear indicator on the bike as the bike will happily do highway speeds in most gears. I've made links to the parts used below.

nice, didn't know you can fit the quad lock stem. i got me the "1inch Ball 12mm Hexagon Hole GPS Mount" from ebay then had to buy seprate ram connector to the quad lock 1" ball

Honestly I spent 40 mins stuck getting this damn thing into tonight I gave up and now watching this I’m going back at it again tomorrow haha are you local to Southend on sea? I’d happily pay you to do mine haha

Hey mate, how did you go with that quad lock stem setup? I for the life of me could not get it all the way in... please help lol 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Hey Dave it’s a pain lol. But it’s possible. I recommend spraying some WD40 or very light lubricant on the spreading mechanism. Loosen the screw on the mechanism out as much as possible without it falling out. As you start to thread it down, be careful not to put direct pressure on the top of the piece as that makes the little pieces spread out, hence, not wanting to go into the stem. Instead, try to hold the little piece on the sides. This helps keep them squeezed together as you try to thread them down into the stem. It’s a pain, it took me a half hour. But it does work. It should win an award for most annoying mod 😂 good luck, let me know how it goes 👍

@Cafe Chronicles: Can you please tell me if the hole in the stem nut is a round or a hex one? On my 2020 ninja 1000sx there is a hex one, and I'm not sure if I can finally manage to mount the stem mount provided in the quad lock kit.

Hi Costi, the nut is a 12mm hex. However, the quad lock stem does fit through. I put silicone grease on the quad lock stem and packed it together carefully. Also, remember to hold the little packed quad lock stem together as you push it down through the hex nut. This will keep the quad lock piece from spreading out and making it difficult to go down. If you push that quad lock stem by pressing on the top piece, it will spread and will make it impossible to push down. This part is a complete pain, and it may take you a half hour. However, it does work, and once it does, it makes a really nice mount. Stick with it brother. Let me know how it goes. Steve

@@cafechronicles on Amazon a company called buybits sells a ball adapter that is a 12mm hex male to insert directly in for a perfect fit on the Kawasaki’s.
