Installing Valve Springs With Engine In Car / The Old School Way 

I did an in car valve seaĺ and valve spring replacement recently on my stock 1985 Corvette since local shops didn't want the job. Lacking an air compressor, I used the rope in cylinder trick. Not a fun endeavor. I would recommend plugging all oil drain back holes in the heads and surrounding the engine with newspapers to catch any keepers that may go flying when initially breaking free frozen retainers.

🔔😎 OLD SCHOOL RACER TRICK Pull the plugs Roll the chosen cylinder to TDC compression. Roll piston down either way. Feed in 2-3 ft of 1/4 inch cotton rope through the spark plug hole. Roll the piston up. Change springs. If you cant figger out the rest from here, call 911.😁😁

Just did this on pops car too! Man... i used the twisty hand tool.. took forever!

Ive done this job. It sucked. Lol. But good piece of mind when upgrading the cam and opportunity to replace the seals.

Talk about those school and these guys should know this the old 390 mushroom Val seals. That’s the best ones to use leaking valve seals where put those on it you’re good to go 390 mushroom Val seals.

you dont have to really put anything in the cylinders ive changed many springs just buy putting the cylinder im working over at TDC and the valve can only drop a inch or less and it does not drop hard enough to hurt anything .......

Nice to see that work for you in car. Mine was too cruded up and I ended up pulling them - did some porting too while they were out.

Bring your pissing up to the top because if you lose air pressure guess what happens pulling ahead

Thank you guys love the channel Where did you get the sleeve that protected the valve seal from getting damaged? Did it come with the seals? Thank you Keep doing what your doing Also do you add the air to each cylinder as you go? I was confused as to why the other cylinders valves moved when you put air to the other cylinder… Or can you just leave the air in the one plug hole and that will be suffice for the rest of the project?

Please anyone chime in here...... If my plan was to swap an auto (tranny) to a standard, what needs to be added to my list below? Manual transmission. Shifter and supporting pieces. A hole cut through Car where shifter will go. Anything else?

Never would go with a anderson if you dont get a cam card. How would you degree it?

I need help doing mine

I'm still early in the video, but have a question about the cam choice that maybe you'll answer in the video. The B-21 cam is the 1.7 roller rocker version of the B-31 cam, which is a supercharger cam. I could do the math to see where it puts the lift and specs of the cam, but it should essentially be .030 less than advertised, which then should be about .060 less than the B-31 which I do have specs on. You're gonna make me do the math, to see how it compares to the other cams you mentioned. Interesting approach. Curious to see how it plays out.

My procedure was a little different though I didn’t use the air compressor tool to hold the valve up. I’m doing the an anderson N41 cam this week end. Gonna make an updated video on it as well. That is a very tedious job. I think the hardest part was trying to catch the videos but I’m by my self and it’s not easy having to need 4 hands 😂

Hey some of the old school tools really work great, if it works it works. Always like the videos when your changing heads,valve springs,cam, and that always the best stuff.

What other tool would you recommend for compressing the springs? about to do this myself

I don't really believe in "highly guarded secrets" but if anybody's interested I have the specs for the b21 and b31 cam not to be a dick towards brew2l but the only way we grow in this industry perform and create more power is by sharing information it's really not that hard to figure out the specs of a camshaft anyway! it's not like we're talking about missile guidance software or even top fuel race secrets! it's a camshaft and if it's specially ground for a small block Ford then chances are there's also 100 other cams out there that are very close to its specifications!
