Today at Alf's Mustang Garage we show you how to replace valve springs with the cylinder heads mounted to the engine. We have new comp springs that are tailored to the specific cam shaft we used. Whenever you change camshaft profiles, its best to select s specific valve spring that will best compliment your specific camshaft.
The book I recommend you buy for your build. You will not get all the information there is to know from watching these videos. This book will help guide you through everything. www.npdlink.com/product/book-...

🔔😎 Old trick from 60 yrs ago: Find tdc. Roll piston down a little. Push a 1/4" cotton rope through the spark plug hole, roll the piston up to holdd the valves closed. About 2' of rope will do it, tie a knot in the outside end so you dont lose the rope. 🙄

Oh I don't know if I have the right mind to engineer things. I might be better off understanding things after their engineered lol. Thanks for the comments, glad I could help!

Does it work the same for a Chevy 350?

Good Morning Alex. Good and helpful as always. Love the little tricks you use (like holding up the valves) etc. Thanks for sharing. See you on the next one. Oh, Is ALF your initials, aka Alf's Mustang Garage? Cheers from Motown/Dearborn and home of the Blue Oval!

Good morning Robert! Alf is actually an old nickname of mine my friends came up with. I'm not sure exactly why but for years people called me that and then it evolved to Mustang Alf. Cheers!

What is the part number for the springs?

Did these 351 heads have any modifications to the valve seats to accommodate for 1966 leaded fuel to more modern unleaded fuel or is that not an issue?
@AlfsMustangGarage

Yes, we had hardened seats installed.

Great tip! Compressing springs is always nerve racking to me - tons of potential energy in there.

Oh ya especially the front suspension coil springs!

You can always check with a screwdriver too (with the plug out on the cylinder) to see where you are at with the piston height/valve clearance...

I've seen holes punched into the piston.

Does this sound like a broken valve spring? 65 Mustang with a 302. There’s a ticking noise BUT the ticking is into the exhaust pipe on that suspect exhaust port. There’s no exhaust leak. Also, that header tube gets a lot hotter than any of the other ones. I stuck a stethoscope to the lifter valley and no ticking there. You can even lay under the car and here the ticking going down into the exhaust. I’ve adjusted the valve train a few times but still does it.
@AlfsMustangGarage

Well its difficult to hear what it sounds like on my end. When you were adjusting the valves, did you look for a broken spring?
@brandonkristy8015
@brandonkristy8015 Год назад
@@AlfsMustangGarage Yes. The spring itself looks normal. Easiest way to explain it is that somethings causing a ticking noise on that exhaust port that goes down into the header. There’s no exhaust leak anywhere.

I wish I were more help but trying to track down noises are just one of those things that are challenging in person let alone over a computer. Have you tried listening inside the bell housing of the transmission?

When I went to rent spring compressor the guy told me best to use air compressed into cylinder with compression checker hose to air compressor .
@AlfsMustangGarage
@AlfsMustangGarage 10 месяцев назад
That's not a bad idea. You'll want to have that particular cylinder up to top dead center and the compressed air regulated otherwise the air may push the piston back down.
@hotrodray6802

Stick a length of 1/4" cotton rope into the spark plug hole and roll the piston up to hold the valves. Don't have to worry about air bs.
