Hi everyone! This one is special to me because I was able to help out a recent subscriber with installing a wall mount handrail. This install provided extra security for the homeowner to get up and down the stairs! Hope you enjoy watching!

Even though I didn't mention anything about code in the video, Bryan and I were able to meet 2 out of the 3 current requirements perfectly. The 1 questionable is the height...we matched the wall mount to the height of the existing railing instead of raising it up to 36". Since the rail is original to the house and we matched the detail of the original handrail, an inspector shouldn't have a problem with it meeting code. If I were to redo the entire rail in the house I would want to raise everything to at least 36".
Special Thanks:
-Bryan, Thanks for making the trip to help me out and film the video! Lets continue to CRUSH IT and DREAM A BIT!

One mistake (lesson) I learned was the screw that goes into the bracket into the wall wasn’t long enough.. so I left the job to go to a close hardware store for a longer matching screw that would go through the bracket, the pad block, drywall & into the framing..well after I got back to the job I realized I could’ve done what you did & add nails or screw (with a long screw I had)through the block into the framing & hide it behind the bracket then the bracket screw would’ve worked..but I did like the long screw threw bracket,block ,drywall & into framing..but I love learning new things.. after 23 years of interior trim I don’t think I’m so good I can’t learn new techniques..thanks for sharing your knowledge 😊

Man, I had to do that recently to pad out the brackets the same way you did and I even routed a thumbnail bit around it and the people didn’t like it because of the sharp corners. They wanted a perfectly round pad out block so I used a 4 inch holes saw to cut a round lock and routed a detail around it and it looked great but I thought it looked fine the way you did it but I learned a long time ago. Don’t matter what I think it’s what the customer wants. Great video new subscriber.

I really appreciate you! I will do my best to keep the videos coming! I took a good amount of time off this summer for camping and motorcycling and didn’t really record any of that for the channel. I feel blessed that you are able to learn something from my videos, that’s the whole reason why I wanted to start the channel! Thank you Felipe! Talk with you later! Have a blessed day 😎

Lots of finish carpenters would scream “ use a connector not nails”! I am one I do finish carpentry for a living and honestly do not get much stair work? However; Hunter my friend I am standing in a custom built 2 story by my Dad who built lots of homes over 45 yrs! He did my stair work & how he tied in 2x12’s as trim at the waist is amazing ! And how did he cut and finish spindles & railings?? That’s right Hunter 16 ga nail gun and glue! 30 yrs later it looks like he just done it and I raised 5 kids in this home 3 were teenage boys who are immature monkeys with the strength of a chimp! You done an excellent job pro to pro and kept cost down! Now that’s a carpenter of the ppl ! New channel “ The American Carpenter “!

I’d like to see a four inch level rail, where it meets the top. But I’d say it came out better than I could do.

I understand exactly what you are saying…if the post was set further back from the nosing that would have sparked that idea in my head. I’m also stuck in some of my ways from all the track home rails I have installed that way. Thanks for that idea for the future and thanks for commenting! Have a blessed day 😎

I will share a few tips white chalk comes right off w/a damp towel so u can snap a line! Or a cheap laser to only make your mark then shut it down. Beautiful job!

Hunter; pro tip? If that’s a hollow Newell Post (?) pop that cap off (tappy -tap with a rubber mallet) use a 45 angle on your drill and drill from the inside to attach the rail. Not always possible but u most often can get an 1 1/2 screw into it w/glue and two screws your good brother!

Also I use a 15 ga tougher nail ; sails right thru that oak white or red! Or any other hardwood ; though watch out for hickory that stuff is rough on nails! But the 15 ga is obviously a bigger (not to much) and holds better!

I recently install wall mount railing. I was having issues with my nailer. Nails would shoot in bout halfway and then jam up the rest of the nail was all bent up
@huntercarlson5446
@huntercarlson5446 7 месяцев назад
It could be 1 of 3 things…you might not have have enough pressure in the compressor to set the nail or enough battery, depending on your nail gun. Another possibility is the depth adjustment on your nail gun for how far it sets the nail(if it has an adjustment). The last possibility is that the firing pin on the nail gun is damaged or broken… Hope this helps! Thanks for watching and have a blessing day! 😎

Thanks i watched this video in full and realized you were using 16g i had 18g brads. Nails shoot fine in other materials it was just the red oak railing that gave me an issue

That return at the top of the stairs should have been sitting horizontal, the top facing the ceiling not angled.

Great point! I gave the homeowner a choice to be able to remove it easily in the future, but she decided to have it permanently installed for her and her husbands safely at the top of the stairs. Thanks for watching and have a blessed day 😎

@@huntercarlson5446 to be honest....super simple job ( for you ) we are ripping out our wood railings ( I know, I know - happy wife, happy life! ) I need new stair/railing caps since all the balusters were in in the old ones so filled with holes. So new 1x6 caps, then trim out. New railings get installed in 2 weeks.

Two handrails, might leave the homeowner with a narrow staircase, not ideal for moving furniture.
