Was skeptical when I opened the pot after cooking, they looked very soupy. Thickened up after cooling a bit and were great!! Love steel cut oats but I’m too lazy to babysit them on the stove, will be using this recipe from now on! Thanks, love all your IP recipes❤
I just made the best steel cut oats of my life thanks to you !! Super delicious. I was skeptical of the steaming method at first but it came out perfectly with no burning !
I added the flax seed this time. What a great addition. I didn’t use milk as the milk I had on hand was beginning to turn. It was fine without it. I added a tablespoon of butter to the serving so that little bit of dairy made it okay. Previously I had cooked the oats in the instant pot with the cinnamon & brown sugar already in it. That seems unnecessary as it can be added to the individual servings. I had also added molasses and maple syrup before, but that seems to be overkill. Not necessarily. The brown sugar and cinnamon is enough. I also added chopped walnuts. I have a double batch in the instant pot right now. Hopefully the 8 minutes are enough for the increased quantity. I put the cooked oats in a container in the refrigerator and scoop it out with an ice cream scoop to create individual portions. Then microwave and add the seasonings.
Thanks for sharing your additions Doug--and I LOVE how you portion out oatmeal. I am going to try that with my kids! I agree that you can make oats plain and then sweeten/flavor how you desire. You should not have to increase time when doubling, it will just take longer to come to pressure and for pressure to release.
Thank you so much! This is my go-to now. I even bought flax seeds to grind up and add in because of you. Just making a batch now, with dried montmorency cherries. I might add some shredded coconut or pistachios or even chocolate chips during the week. Solid recipe to have in the rotation!
Definitely going to give this a try! My husband and I are both oatmeal addicts. We eat it almost every single day, sometimes even a couple of times a day. We always get the reduced sugar Quaker instant oatmeal packets since they are so quick and convenient with our busy schedules and they are perfect for a healthy midday snack since we both work from home, but we're going to give this a try real soon!
I'm a long time Instant Pot user, and I just purchased the inner pot from your affiliate link. I hope you get the credit for it. I'm thinking that this will be great for other foods that I stopped trying to do in the IP because of the food burning at the bottom of the pan.
I can’t argue with how her oatmeal turned out, but I believe what she said and what she did was not the same. She said there should be a 3:1 ratio of water to oatmeal. But, instead of using 3 cups of water and 1 cup oatmeal, she only used 2 cups of water, a 2:1 ratio. I use a 3:1 ratio for Bob’s Red Mill steel cut oats and find that to be the best. I cook it on high pressure for 5 minutes. Also, I use a 7 cup Pyrex bowl, which fits perfectly in my 8 qt. Instant Pot. I’ve never had any problems with the glass breaking and have done this many times. Perhaps new Pyrex is made differently. My bowl is about 5 years old. I like using the Pyrex bowl, as I can store it in the same bowl I cooked it in. There’s nothing to wash except the glass bowl, once it’s finished.
Sorry if that was confusing. I used 2 cups of water and 1 cup of milk. You need a 3:1 ratio of liquid to oats. And I do believe some pyrex works, but they officially state not to use it, so I want to be sure I pass along that info for safety :) thanks for sharing your preferences!
Actually, she used 2 cups of dairy and 1 cup of water. On the video she says “add one cup of water and 2 cups of milk” as she poured in 2 cups of milk and 1 cup of water. She poured in the milk first, then the water, but the words were backwards to what was in the video. I had to watch it 3 times to figure it out.
Attempted to make this morning but found the stainless bowl I had on hand kept the lid from sealing so switched to stove top...still made an amazing breakfast! Now I am motivated to get the right insert to make this again. Thanks for the video!
Did you cook the oats in the inner pot instead of the separate pot? If so, you can not use milk, as that will cause a burn notice. Let me know and I can further troubleshoot for you.
Hey! This recipe can easily be doubled as long as it fits inside your heat-safe bowl with about double the room for expansion and the cooking time will be the same. If it doesn't fit, you can make it right in the inner pot using 2 cups oats and 6 cups of water (omit the milk). For that, you would decrease the cooking time to 6 minutes (takes less time when not using pot in pot)
Hi there! This will keep for 5 days in a sealed container in the refrigerator. I simply warm up individual portions in the microwave as the week goes. I use this insert mainly for oatmeal, but it is great for any casserole you want to cook in the instant pot as well.
So I tried this and mine came out soupy and didn’t thicken up. I did not add the flax seed due to I can’t eat them which is probably why mine never thickened up. If you are going to say flax seed is optional shouldn’t there be an adjustment to the liquid measurement?
The added flax shouldn't make a difference in the liquid. Can you confirm the amounts of liquid you mixed with the oats and whether you did a natural pressure release or full pressure relase?
@@AMindFullMom I followed the instructions provided in the video 2 cups of milk, 1 cup of water, 1 cup of steel cut oats(gluten free). I did a natural release of 10 mins and then a final release. I ended up putting them back in and pressure cooking for another 8 mins. They were no longer soupy but were very chewy and tasted undone. I was unable to eat. At least my husband was able to eat and they didn't go to waste🙁
Thank you for the video. I've been using a pyrex bowl to make my steel cut oats. I'll switch to stainless steel. Why the mix of milk and water and not just say 2% milk? I add my peanut butter and banana before cooking, why do you add the additional ingredients after cooking. I also add cinnamon prior to cooking. Does this ruin the spice? Any other spice recommendations? Nutmeg? Cardamom? What about tahini instead of peanut butter?
Hi Philip! You can use all milk, as long as it is not whole milk. Without a bit of water added, the whole milk can separate under this high heat. I don't add any ingredients before so I can change it up for each person in my family based on what they feel lik. Feel free to add in spices of any kind before cooking, or nut butter. Tahini may be great--I haven't tried but now I am tempted. Hope that helps!
I’m no IP expert, but why not just use the porridge setting? I just upgraded to a Evo Duo Plus and I’m wondering if all the bells and whistles are worth it?
Hi Jeremy! In my opinion, the extra bells and whistles are not worth it. The extra settings are just guesstimate times on high pressure. It does not know if you are cooking steel-cut oats, regular oats, etc. Sorry!
Hi there! I followed the recipe exactly (added chia) and the oats were not cooked at all. Liquids were not absorbed at all. What suggestions do you have?? Thanks :)
When this happens, put the lid back on the inner pot and add 2-3 minutes additional cooking time. In the future, be sure to use cold water in the inner pot, high pressure, and a natural pressure release. I hope that helps.
I tried it this morning, my first instant pot meal. I used a borosilicate bowl, and a 6 qt instant pot. 8 minutes but it was very watery not creamy. I used McCann’s steel cut oats. What do you suggest?
Hi Sandra! I am sorry it did not turn out as creamy as desired. I would add 5 minutes for this bowl to see if that helps and be sure to let pressure release natrually. And if that does not work, cut the liquid by 1/2 cup :)
I tried this a few months ago when I first purchased my IP. I failed miserably. Every time I tried steal cut oats they would foam up and make a HUGE mess. Have you ever had this happen?
Hi Tommy! The second one is smaller, so it can fit in the inner pot. Here is a list of my favorite Instant Pot Products (amazon affliate) amzn.to/3GcCWcq
Unfortunately, I have not been able to find a deep stainless steel bowl for the 3-quart. Most are designed for larger pressure cookers. You could use a stainless steel small mixing bowl or cake pan I'd you have one that fits.
I tried this twice got a milk mess both times in the outer pot. I not sure why. I let the insta pot cool down the 10 minutes. Then release the remainder of the pressure. Open the lid to wonderful oats BUT a mess. 😳
@@AMindFullMom 8 qt insta pot 1 cup of oats 2 cups milk 1 cup cold water 1.5 cups cold water in outer pot Cook 8 min high pressure (normal) cool down 10 min Then release pressure Remove lid, to a milky mess in the outer pot. 🤣
@@AMindFullMom Spoke with my smarter daughter. She blames the inner pot. I think that is the only answer. I won’t stop using the InstaPot for doing Steel cut oats though. They taste wonder.
That is why this recipe calls for cooking pot in pot. If you were to try to cook the oats directly in the inner pot, you can not use milk--as that will curdle.
It doesn't look like it saves much actual time, it just means I don't have to stay at the stove constantly stirring which is enough reason to use the instant pot.
works great. i love that it has stainless steal pot inside ru-vid.comUgkxG-7WiT7ocumjytOpHDFt632PL0pxXRAg and not the one with coating. we used to have a coated pot before, and the coating slowly peels, and i am sure went into the food that we cooked. Absolutely love stainless steel, and will not use a coated product again. This pot has many settings and many buttons, and i need to sit down with a manual to figure out which setting to use. I used the basic functions, and even though i am not technologically skilled, i turned it on and assembled it without any help.Very satisfied with this product overall.
Hey there! Did you combine 2 cups of oats with 2 cups of water and 4 cups of milk? The oats should set up in a few minutes, but if not, cook them for an additional 2-3 minutes on high pressure.
If you live at high altitude, you may need to increase the timing. Also be sure to do a full pressure release. Here is my altitude guide: amindfullmom.com/instant-pot-high-altitude-cooking/@@mamariannai
You can make the steel cut oats with simply water in the inner pot. Combine 1 cup steel cut oats with 3 cups of water. Feel free to add a pinch of salt, cinnamon, or sugar. Cook for 6 minutes on high pressure with natural pressure release. Serve with maple syrup, milk, etc

The Instant Pot booklet says 1 1/2 cups of liquid for pressurizing for a 6 qt IP. Your video says 1 cup and your blog says 1 1/2 cups. I’m really tired of people having videos for Instant Pot and going against what the manufacturer says to do. Its a great recipe otherwise.
My blog says 1.5 cups for an 8 quart instant pot and 1 cup for a 6 quart. I have tested over and over again and found 1 cup of thin liquid to be plenty for a 6 quart.
