You are partially correct. The exam will grade your handwashing at the beginning of every skill and it is acceptable to wash your hands before speaking to the patient. However, ideally, your hands should be washed before touching the patient and you should provide your introduction immediately so that the patient knows who you are and what you intend to do. You must also close the privacy curtain, which is considered dirty and this should be done BEFORE you wash your hands to keep them clean.

So if you wash your hands after closing the curtain then your going to have to open it to enter..so wouldn't you be getting your hands "dirty" again?

If you drop an item, pick it up. If it will be touching the patient (gown, towel, washcloth), put it in dirty linen and get a new one. You may touch the call light after washing your hands, that is fine. It is good that you recognize that the call light is dirty and you should try to minimize your contamination whenever possible by removing those items before washing. Great job!

You are ABSOLUTELY right! Privacy curtains are not considered clean (patients, staff, visitors touch them). You should wash your hands AFTER touching the privacy curtain because you want to make sure you have clean hands before performing your skills. You are definitely on the right track! These videos are designed by an RN according to current state standards and best nursing practice and are proven to be accurate by thousands of passing students (Tell your teacher about our videos!)Good luck

No, that is not necessary. Soap is applied directly to washcloths, not put into the basin so the basin only holds clean water (the dirty, soapy washcloths are not put into the basin after use - they are always set aside). Therefore, if you need to replace the water because it is cold, you would just dump the cold water out and refill the basin with warm water using a paper towel between your gloves and the dirty faucet. Thanks for a great question!

4 is sufficient: one for face (set aside) second to wash torso and nearest arm (set aside) third to rinse torso and nearest arm (return to basin) - dry and dress resident - third to wash back (set aside) and fourth to rinse back (set aside). The care plan tells you to wash face, neck, torso, back and ONE arm so 4 washcloths are sufficient. If washing both arms, use 5 washcloths. Good luck!

For the exam, it does not matter which method you use, both are acceptable. However, the "leaves" technique is much more effective at providing a completely separate area of the washcloth for each stroke. Good luck!

According to the clinical skills checklist for Michigan, you must "Contain corners of washcloth while washing and rinsing (e.g., forming mitt)" As long as you contain the corners, you meet the requirements, therefore it is not mandatory that you use the mitt method. This method is better at providing a clean area of the washcloth for each eye, preventing cross-contamination more effectively. You use 1 washcloth for the face, 1 to wash the torso, 1 to rinse the torso (and back) and 1 for back

The rinsing washcloth isn't dirty...after washing, the patient is clean! You can use an additional washcloth, if the testing center has enough (but with testing 8 people a day, 3 skills each, supplies may run low) so that you do not have to place the rinsing washcloth in the basin. However, it is acceptable for the exam. Good luck!

This is not an issue for the exam. You may use an additional washcloth if you wish. You are not graded on the amount of washcloths that you use, however, you only have a limited amount of supplies in the testing center. This technique is allowed in the test. You may change the water for the test if you prefer, but the small amount of soap from the washcloth is not affecting your ability to wash the back or rinse the back (think bathtub - you don't change the water after washing each arm). Thanks
@thumpaholden
@thumpaholden 11 лет назад
Yeah, I agree. The number of washcloths is ambiguous. For example, the FL skills checklist asks if the candidate (me) "replace the basin of water during the task if it becomes cold or soapy?" In my opinion, putting a rinse cloth back into the basin would transfer soap rinsed from the patient's body back into the basin. So, IMO, the cloth should be discarded after rinsing OR the water would need to be changed.
@4yourcna
@4yourcna 11 лет назад
All CNAs in all settings should be familiar with how to perform this skill. Each patient is different and will require different care. The care you provide will be determined by the care plan (developed by the RN for each specific patient) so some patients may require this skill and others won't. Good luck!

That method is fine, if you have two basins available. However, you never put a soapy washcloth back in the basin when using a single basin, so the water never gets dirty, which is much simpler than tracking clean and dirty basins. But for the exam (and in clinical practice), that is fine as long as you remember which is which. :-)

Yes, you are washing personal skin (breasts) so you should have gloves on to wash these areas to make it less personal and more clinical. This will increase patient comfort. Put your gloves on after your opening and after you have gathered your supplies, right before you begin the skill (this keeps your gloves clean for the patient). Great question! Good luck!

You do not HAVE to change to water, unless it becomes cold or soapy. Don't put soap or soapy washcloths in the water and work quickly and this will not be an issue. You can always say "I WOULD replace the water if it bcomes cold" if you wish, but it is not required. No, you do not have to lower the bed when replacing water, only when you leave the patient, because it is a fall risk for patients getting out of bed. Thanks and good luck.
@4yourcna
@4yourcna 12 лет назад
You will not be using a thermometer in the test. Check the water with the inside of your wrist to make sure it does not feel hot or cold and ask the patient to check the water temperature to make sure it is comfortable for them. The evaluator may put their hand in the water to check the temp, but will not measure it with a thermometer. They will not ask you during the skill what the temp should be. It just needs to be comfortable. Good luck!

If you put soap in the basin, how will you rinse the skin? You must have clean water to rinse with. These videos are the most current version of these skills for the state of Florida (that is the last time the state changed any standards). You may use 5 or 6 washcloths for partial bedbath (5 is the minimum and demonstrated in the video). These videos are demonstrated according to current Florida standards.
@4yourcna
@4yourcna 10 лет назад
@Brenda Dalton: 5 is the minimum if you are washing the entire torso, neck, face, back and two arms. The care plan states to only wash one arm, so 4 are sufficient. You are not graded on how many washcloths you use, however.

I was taught to change the sides of the washcloth when washing behind the ears, neck, torso, and abdomen. I was taught to slide in a S formation from the ears to the abdomen using different parts of the washcloth. Is it required to switch corners while washing this section on the exam or not?

I am in a class right now. The teacher is clueless. I was told by the other students that I did a skill wrong because I closed the curtain and then washed my hands. I did this because the lady in this video did it. I want to do exactly what the state requires. Wouldn't my hands be clean and then touching a dirty curtain?

@thumpaholden

The FL CNA Clinical skills checklist for the partial bed bath lists "Replace basin of water during task if it becomes cold or soapy". Therefore, I have to demonstrate this so that the examiner can check it off. When would you recommend I replace the water (or tell the examiner that I'd change the water)? I assume it would have to be at some stage when the resident/patient is dry. If I've raised the bed to a height suitable for good body mechanics, should I lower it while I refill the basin?

hello, patty, I like all yours videos, I actually work with bed up, but i would like to make you a question, Do you think that I can fail the test if I give the call light to the patient, raise the bed and go to wash my hands and later get my supplies, I do it like that, because I don't want to get contaminate when I raise the bed with my hands clean, i have this doubt, but I'd like to know what do you think?? please Let me know!.
@4yourcna
@4yourcna 8 лет назад
Your concern about contamination is well thought out and appropriate. I cannot say how each individual examiner would grade this, but it may be considered a safety violation by some evaluators to leave the side of the bed when it is in a raised position. You must perform the opening, obtain consent, wash your hands and gather supplies in that order. If concerned about contamination, you could always use a barrier (such as a paper towel) between your clean hand and the bed controls. The only standard regarding raising the bed requires that they are lowered at the end of the skill, so I would say you have latitude to perform this step either way, according to the standards. Best of luck!

Hi I'm taking the FL CNA exam sometime next month and I was wondering if the bath mitt technique is the only technique that can be used during the exam. I can't properly fold a bath mitt into my hand to get four corners. It's really bothersome trying to hold it together as well. I like the four corner method you employed in your video. Can I use this four corner method instead of the bath mitt during the exam?

I've watched the video many times and the direction on the screen says 5 wash clothes but the CNA only uses 4, because the care plan says on according to prometric wash face, neck, torso, back and one arm. In answering my question you stated 5 is the minimum( wash clothes to use ) but in another answer to the same question you state 4 is sufficient. Can you please clarify?. Thank you so much.

in all the videos she never raises the bed to waist level. good videos but isn't that bad body mechanics?
@4yourcna
@4yourcna 9 лет назад
Alfred Alcantara You are not REQUIRED to raise the bed because there are many settings that do not have adjustable beds (home care, assisted living, low-income nursing homes, convalescent centers), so this is NOT a testable point. You may raise the bed if you wish, but if you do, you MUST lower it at the end of the skill (this is a safety point and can fail you if not done). Because it is not a testable point, this step is not shown in the videos.

@4yourcna
@4yourcna 11 лет назад
How are you washing and rinsing the entire body with only two washcloths??? The first one is used for the face and you are washing wet body openings (eyes, nose, mouth) which will cause contamination of the washcloth. Are you going to spread those boogers around her body? ICK. Setting the soapy washcloth aside while you rinse will make it cold. That is uncomfortable for the patient. You can't put it back in the basin because that will make your rinse water soapy. Not a good technique.
@4yourcna
@4yourcna 11 лет назад
You should ABSOLUTELY wear gloves when touching a woman's breast area, to make the skill less personal and more clinical. Plus, you are cleaning wet body openings (the eyes, nose, mouth) which become portals of exit for any pathogens in the patient's body. This skill should be done with gloves. The test evaluator cannot tell you that you cannot wear gloves during the exam (however, if you are changing gloves 5 times, they can restrict excessive glove use). Good luck!
