For a 2001 allroad the differences I found was the two small metal frames around the mileage and time/date screens need to be removed as well to get the white piece off the board, and it was a Torx 10. Excellent Video, very helpful, Thanks Wolf Auto, you guys rock.
I did the repair today, and posted a couple of photos on Instagram. One thing I found out the hard way: I recommend putting electrical tape under the board so that it doesn't short against anything. Also, you should use a multimeter to "beep"/test continuity for each of the solder points.
Good video, but a couple of comments. You should twist the needles off or at least put some protective material down if you're using a screwdriver. Also it would be helpful to tell people that these are a mild interference, friction fit, and that the mechanism on counterclockwise rotation is quite robust. I was seriously stressed out the first time I removed them without knowing this. Regarding the soldering operation, I would HIGHLY recommend some liquid no-clean flux for the removal. On the re-soldering, it seems that you left a couple of reference.starter pads with solder on them, or pillowed some fresh on there prior to soldering. If you really cleaned it well of solder , there would not be enough there to adhere the new un-tinned flex circuit. Also, you absolutely need to use no-clean flux on re-installation as RMA is corrosive and for longevity, not a very good idea. Now maybe that was no-clean paste flux, but this really needs to be mentioned. And Clouseau says that your neighbor has a large rectangular if not square yard, and does not bag his clippings. I agree with the other respondent, very relaxing....
There are only five or six connectors on the strip you have to solder - check where the circuit board tracks go to. If you try this, and test the bare board in the car, make sure the centre connector (the data port) is the right way up, as there is no plastic on the board like the other two. ;) This is easy if you are good with a soldering iron, but get a magnifying glass or one of those illuminated head magnifiers to check for joins between the soldered tracks.
I need some good rework equipment and whatever the good flux and heat sink material they use these days are. Leave a link for any good recommendations if you have a moment.
Excellent Info, Thanks, by the way, I have a jetta 2.0 automatic 2002, the cluster part number; 1J0 920 806K, it comes with 3 gray LCD (Clock, Shift indicator and odo/trip), none of 3 LCDs works, already take apart the cluster and clean all of them and the PCB too, but still not work none LCD... Thinking on LCD driver damaged maybe...Can you help me? thanks, best regards from GDL MX
Hi bud, great video! :) just wondering.. if i was to send you my 2000 audi A4 1.8T model cluster. What would it cost to get this fixed? Lol. And how long would it take for you to rapair and send back to Australia?? Plz help me haha
+Wolf Auto Parts I know where I can find a cluster for 20$, so when I get a chance I'll be getting it and take it a part, will try to replace the filter for a blue one and if I get lucky I'll be posting the result here. best regards,
Is the replacement screen of higher quality than the stock one, or are they the same part? My question is, will this need to be done every 100k or so miles, or should the replacement last the life of the vehicle?
I would imagine it will last alot longer than the stock one. The way the stock ones are designed they don't last long and at the time when they were producing the vehicle they didn't realize how quickly they would fail. That's why the aftermarket one will last longer cause they were made and designed 10+ years after the stock lcd.
Wolf Auto Parts Love the video, a little hesitant to try this on my own. What would you charge for this service? I would love my B5 s4 lcd screen repaired. Thanks in advance
***** Sorry for the late response... We don't do any servicing at this time, we just provide any Audi parts that you're looking for at Wolf Auto Parts .com
Two questions. I cant seem to find just the FIS screen on your guys website, just the whole cluster. Do you guys sell just the screen that you are replacing in this video. Also, is there a way to remove the original without using a hot air soldering iron? Is wicking the solder joints a possibility?
You can use a copper solder wick but you have to be careful not to get it too hot or you will lift the traces from the board. I do have a couple of LCDs here. Give us a call to order one. 612-424-9000. We get $60 for them.
One other thing, my turn signals on my 01 B5 began as being intermittent to not working at all now. My cruise control was the same way and also does not work anymore. This makes me believe its not the relay but the actual turn signal arm/connections itself. Do you guys have a video on replacing those. And/or sell replacement arms?
I bought one of these screens off ebay.I am very experienced in soldering. The screen works for a couple of hours and then failed.Do yourself a favour buy the genuine. The screen was far to bright anyway
+Andrey Smetanin We dismantle Audi's and VW's, so we have quite a few of them on hand. Here's our entire inventory of instrument clusters: bit.ly/1NKOGll
+Wolf Auto Parts hey buddy I was wondering if you could please help me. I took my cluster off because the person I bought it from put some black tape over the abs light and I did exactly what you did taking off the needles on the speedometer and the fuel and temp gauge and when I put it back in the car the needles went way down on the gas gauge and the temp gauge. like now there both horizontal about a half an inch lower than where there supposed to be when the car is off and they didn't work when I turned the car on. Any suggestions? I popped them off just like you did and snapped them back on but know there all messed up,any idea's? Thank you so much if you can help at all
+Wolf Auto Parts I ended up getting them back and functional but I noticed my gas gauge needle works but when I turn off the car the needle goes about an eight inch to 3/16th under the red line on the gas gauge,do you have any advice on how to adjust it a little or is it supposed to be that far below the red empty line when car is turned off? I don't remember if it was that far low before when the car was off but it does function when the car is turned on. Any advice would be hugely appreciated. Love your channel guys.
Yes, we do have some available. We don't have them listed on WolfAutoParts.com yet, but if you want to give us a call we can get you one. 612-424-9000. We have them available for $60 each.
