Video tutorial on how to knit with multiple colors using the intarsia knitting technique. For the multicolored sample (doll's blanket) shown in the video, I used leftover yarns (worsted weight, medium) and US size 7 needles (4.5 mm). I cast on a total of 24 stitches (8 stitches in each color) and for each set of blocks, I knit 14 rows in garter stitch. I bound off the stitches in color using a regular bind off method.
To determine gauge for a project with this pattern, suggest knitting a small swatch using the yarn and needles (recommended for that yarn; usually noted on the yarn label). Cast on a multiple of any number of stitches and knit a few rows. Then, measure the width of the swatch. Say you cast on 12 stitches and it measured 2 inches wide, then that is your gauge. For a blanket project, let's say if you wish for each square block to be 8 inches wide, then do the math as follows: if 2 inches of fabric require 12 stitches, then 8 inches of fabric will require: 8 x 12, and divide that number by 2, which gives you 48. Then you would need to cast on 48 stitches with each color for each row of blocks. You can then keep knitting as many rows until you get the desired length (to either make a square or rectangular block).
