How to benchmark Intel CPUs for a fair result: 1. Equal GPU; 2. Equal memory; 3. Equal cooling; 4. Underclock competitors product by 50%;

@Jognt The RAM was NOT close enough. They used Corsair Vengeance: www.amazon.com/Corsair-Vengeance-4x16GB-3200MHz-Desktop/dp/B071JQJG13 which was most likely a set of Hynix dies.. Getting 2x16GB on 2933MT on any decent timings is a feat of its own, 4 dual ranks needs these to be really loose.

It definitely is. The press follows what the audience is talking about to a certain point. It's easy to brush people saying this kinda stuff off as tin foil hatters especially as it can be hard to find a load of evidence proving it every time the issue is brought up...Until Jim started making videos that basically were 30 minute blocks of him showing evidence of exactly that and explaining it all in great detail, now it's not just the "bigger picture" type people who are questioning reviewers. I've honestly stopped reading them unless I'm actually buying a part, most reviewers lack a lot of knowledge that enthusiasts have and the time pressures are so great even the smarter ones tend to have to rush their reviews somewhat.

However, I don't believe the idea of them being shills or anything like that(NOTE: you didn't say it, but I believe the distinction has to be made, as it can be easily misrepresented). @TheDemocrab: The funny thing is that those channels tried to portray themselves as the heroes of this entire thing when they refuse to cut their sponsorship of free hardware and special access with Intel. They have let this slide for over 25 years and benefited directly from Intel's criminal actions. An accessory to a criminal act is just as guilty of the act as the person that actually performed it. It's quite black and white. When they get called out on their bullshit they either ignore you (HU did this to me in the comments for this vid) or they insult you (GN did that to me on their latest video). I said the same thing to both. Stop with the freebies and drop their special access to be real reviewers or continue to be a paid advertising outlet.

What's funniest in all this, 9900K, compared to 2700X with half cores disabled, is still much worse value. 50% better result vs. nerfed CPU, but the price is almost twice as high? Intel, pls. Needless to say, non-nerfed 2700X gonna destoy 9900K in price/performance almost 2:1. And the asking price of 9900K even if it runs at 5GHz all core OC? Still too high even for such luxury. You have to commend AMD for putting out these beastly CPUs where even if the odds are stacked against them, they still do more than acceptably well. By showing that it has a 50% gain on a nerfed $300~ AMD part I think this whole benchmark is now disastrously backfiring on Intel. As many have mentioned, they're basically making their flagship CPUs fight against a Ryzen 3 which is an entry level Ryzen (not counting the new Athlon 200GE). All I can say to Intel is, "enjoy your position while it lasts." With 2019 just around the corner and AMD 7nm rolling out soon, things are looking pretty grim for them in the near future, at least as far as consumer, HEDT and to some extent server CPU markets are concerned.

Independent reviewers with no ties to the manufacturers are showing up in many industries thanks to youtube. Check the independent car reviews for example. This type of journalism dissects a product like a dead-fish and leave no bones behind. I guess we are in different time, and old marketing people at large corporations is just learning how to deal with this developments. In a way, this whole episode probably shows that they were worried of independent review were going to show not much of a diference and decided to preempt them with the release of their own biased quasi independent third-party review.

I actually believe Steve did a fantastic job, he isn’t an investigative reporter but he was clear, levelheaded and unbiased in any way. The guy he was interviewing clearly was set to walk out if challenged too hard based on his body language and several things that happen mid interview so he got the perspective of the owners and with what was said allows viewers to make up their own minds on the statements given. I would not consider the company anyway professional or fit to carry out that testing and by the admission by the company in a later statement to GN about the reason they used AMDs stock cooler told me everything I needed to know, they basically said that if it’s good enough for AMD to include then it’s good enough to test with. No professional benchmarker should have ever used that as any excuse and this was their carefully crafted, not rushed follow up statement. If that’s the attitude you have being at that level then you deserve any ridicule you get, under that logic all Intel chips should be tested without coolers as Intel clearly believes their chips can perform perfectly without cooling.

They even had the audacity to use a stock cooler for the 2700X, while the 9900K gets the nice Noctua treatment. How in the world is that fair? Either both platforms get the same cooling solutions or you stick with what is the stock configuration. In this case, the 9900K should get benchmarked nude ;). When I first came across that report, I was confused as to why Intel would do this. Why would you indulge in these shady tactics? Everybody in the PC gaming and enthusiast community knows that they hold the gaming advantage. It's because that difference does not justify double the price of 2700X. That's just CPUs alone, factor in Z390/Z370 costs, plus an aftermarket cooler and now we're looking at a significantly more expensive platform. Whereas the 2700X works just fine on a B450 mobo and already comes with a decent stock cooler for moderate OCing (remember ryzen isn't thermally limited, but rather you run into a voltage wall first. I also don't know which gamer would be buying a $500+ CPU to play at 1080P lol, when at 1440P and above, CPU performance is a complete wash. My faith in humanity was restored however when many publications immediately called them out on it. With that, Intel now look like they've just dug their own grave.

That's way, way worse. Why? The results they show are actually grossly unrepresentative of what users will actually experience! Any half competent PC builder will not experience even a quarter of the litany of issues they introduced, and as such, they will get substantially different performance as what is shown. They would have to recreate the horribly flawed test configuration to experience that, and they're simply not going to. Normal marketing, the user can buy the product and reasonably expect to at get something like the +50% perf benefit cited _in the games that were tested_ (because cherry picked results) at least - but they aren't going to get that. Holy shit, I don't know what to say. Just when I think you've hit the high point with one of your videos, you blow it all out of the water with an even better one. Full of "drama" and interesting information. It's like watching a TV-series or something! Really appreciate the time you take to dig around and find out all of this stuff! And I like that you put your own thoughts and predictions at the end as well. Makes me smile wryly when I realise I wasn't so crazy when I thought Intel were up to no good, all these years. Very impressive, keep up the good work! Actually, I'm going to go so far as to sign up on your Patreon for this. You've earned it. :)

@Baron von Limbourg: I stopped buying Intel in 1997 when they lied about the P2 broadcasting its CPUID over the internet for about 2 years. It took a group of Australian engineers to reverse engineer the chip and white paper it. Only then did Intel admit to lying to consumers about it. They issued a bios update for all the Intel motherboards that handed users control over whether they wanted the CPUID to be broadcast or not. Boycotting takes commitment, principles, and ethics. It would take a lot of good work from Intel towards consumers for me to go out and purchase anything Intel branded. In the 21 years I haven't missed anything and have been happy with AMD's offerings. i also boycott Nvidia due to their shady practices like starting the entire rebranding old gpus and selling them as if they are a new processers. Yes, ATI did that as well, but that was before AMD bought them. Now I'm not under any delusion that AMD doesn't have any shady deals/skeletons in their closet. They do, but it is nowhere near the criminality that Intel and Nvidia do day after day.

Remember that one time when that one "security firm" with all of 3-4 employees, who just happened to be based out of Tel Aviv, Israel - about 6 miles away from Petah Tikva, where Intel has an R&D location... coincidentally - just so happened to find exploits buried so deep within the firmware of AMD Zen-based CPUs that it required physical access to the machine or admin privileges to pull off? And, who knows how much time, money, and resources were needed to pull off such a level of research to identify these exploits in the first place, especially by a BRAND NEW security firm of 3-4 employees with ZERO legitimate past references within this specific line of work. A BRAND NEW security firm whose domains & e-mails just so happened to have been registered in JUNE of 2017 - coincidentally, JUNE of 2017 also being the same month of the same year in which Intel was first informed by Google of the 'Spectre' & 'Meltdown' security faults of their CPU architecture. Don't know why I thought of that actually. I guess the whole Sysmark-BAPCo thing reminded me of that. ...for some reason...

I love how you wrap it up. Steve and his crew at Gamers Nexus just did a good job of putting pressure on Principal Technologies, to get some answers. As much as I want to cry foul on this one, I have also been in the tech field for a long time, and there is no shortage of people in high places, that are actually not qualified to do their jobs. I can see a scenario where these people didn't do their homework and enabled Game mode on the 2700X, without realizing what it actually does. That being said, I'm not saying it wasn't malicious either. No one that has spent more than a month in this field, or ever ran an experiment, would ever test one CPU on a weaker cooler, while the competition got a much better cooler. Actually this did happen when Skylake X came out, and much of the tech press ran Ryzen on air coolers, while Skylake X had 280mm or 360mm water coolers on it. The biggest problem with this is them getting a review out many days in advance, before third party reviewers were allowed to show their results. They know that people believe an initial headline, and no amount of corrections or retractions fix it in their minds. This happens all of the time in the mainstream "news" media. I've said this before. It's the same as government activities, where the population think they couldn't be this malicious, and they must be incompetent. They aren't incompetent. They know what they're doing, and they are just hoping that enough of you out there aren't smart enough or paying attention enough to catch it. They also know that other lazy or unqualified third parties will take the story and run, without checking it's results.
@mapesdhs597
@mapesdhs597 6 лет назад
"... without realizing what it actually does." I suppose that's possible; problem is though, I consider it very unlikely that the people who did these tests, after setting up the 2700X system(s) and doing all the settings changes, not even once ran CPU-Z, CoreTemp, RealTempGT or HWInfo, any of which would have instantly shown the CPU was only running 4 cores and 8 threads. Surely it's a standard part of any benchmarking process, to run CPU-Z and some kind of temp monitor to make sure all is well before starting any testing? Nah, I think they knew exactly what they were doing, and the company's links to Intel chime perfectly with the biased results.
@TheCgOrion

I 100% agree with you. There's always that small part of me that tries to hold on to the benefit of the doubt, but I believe you are right. That was me trying to grasp at straws, but it's just a big ask. There's just no way they could be that uninformed.

Being fair, AMD really needs to rejig its game mode profile, especially in Ryzen Master for mainstream. On a furthernote, wouldn't it make sense to disable HT rather than cores in Legacy Compatibility, since its games like Ubisoft
@mduckernz
@mduckernz 6 лет назад
Perhaps, yeah, as then you ensure core to memory controller locality - whereas if you disable the cores from one CCX, memory accesses over the channel of the memory controller on that CCX then have to pass over IF to reach the core which requested the memory read. If you instead disable the SMT of those cores, when the memory read is requested on a core that is in the same CCX as the relevant memory controller, there's no need to go over IF - and disabling SMT makes this situation more likely to occur. ... then again, you've got to balance this against the opposing argument, which is to reduce core to core comm. latency by removing the possibility that particularly "chatty" threads will be distributed across multiple CCXes (by restricting them to a single CCX). Is reducing this more important than reducing memory read latencies over CCX boundaries? Perhaps, hard to say for certain. As to your other point regarding Ryzen Master: IMO, Ryzen Master should disable the "Game Mode" toggle on everything other than ThreadRipper CPUs, leaving only the legacy compatibility toggle, as this is less likely to be confused for something inherently desirable to turn on.

Intel knows they are in trouble. Because there is no way 7nm Ryzen can be so terrible it will not be a much, much better buy than the 9900K. Same for Threadlripper and Eypic vs Intel's equivalent cpus. If you think this is dirty pool just wait. There is no limit to what Intel will do to keep their market dominance, especially in severs.

Even tangentially it's not tin-foil. It runs far deeper than just this, and I'm not sure you've ever touched on it yet. ICC(Intel C Compiler) was used by many benchmarking suites, and the gaming industry at large. With the ICC Patcher, you can boost performance sometimes by upwards of 40% on AMD CPUs. The ICC Compiler has the same style of disclaimers now, in it's compiler documentations (as a footnote), and is no longer the defacto standard outside of STEM. The crux was ICC hid EVERY extended x86 instruction behind an if(GenuineIntel) conditional. Not using the ISO flags they themselves co-authored (and actually do use within the scope of the insane conditional). They ensured features were not called universally on an 'if(FeaturePresent)' basis. Just to re-iterate; SSE, MMX etc were entirely ignored when running on AMD hardware. I'd say disabling SIMD outright even when present is a pretty huge deal... To be clear developers who did inline assembly and optimized for AMD in their code, would still see benefits, but the compilers automatic behaviour was to heavily descriminate and ONLY apply optimization for Intel's sole benefit. So even some games effected by the ICC, won't see huge jumps on AMD hardware when patched. Running the ICC Patcher, elucidates a hell of a lot, it can throw false positives on occasion (genuine uses of if(GenuineIntel) conditionals to do other things like chip identification. But testing it out, you can find clear as day evidence just how pervasive and impactful it was. (ICC Patcher, creates filename.exe.orig backups). (Most mainstream benchmarks ditched ICC once the controversy was successfully litigated. But just as importantly so did most mainstream game developers).
