I'm 62 today (😄) and totally agree with 90% of your videos, in particular your advice on not copying trends. I was reflecting on my home and it's style. It's definitely me! After all these years, the pieces I love, and have kept through various homes, are a reflection of my life. Almost everything I own I LOVE. It's not a design concept, but a curation of a life well lived. Every piece has a story and I've managed to fit them into a cohesive space that somehow works.

“Design” tip I DESPISE: buying a stack of books from Goodwill and turning the spines to the wall because you’ve never read the books or don’t like the titles. That is SO weird to me.

I absolutely agree! Dumbest and most impractical trend ever!!! Nothing says, “I don’t actually read my books” quite like this.

My home was built in 1920. The elderly couple who lived in it for almost 50 years had put new, high quality beige carpet through the entire first floor. The first thing I did was to check a corner to see what was underneath the carpet. Oak floors in good condition! I ripped out the new carpet and had it put in the kids bedrooms that had ancient, very brightly colored shag carpets. The kitchen got terra cotta tiles.

At last someone who recognises that painting isn't always the 'cheap fix' many designers say it is? painting can be expensive. especially of you're starting out and need brushes, rollers, poles, trays etc , we recently painted our teenagers bedroom , her room isn't huge and we did it ourselves she wanted all white 😁 we have acquired a few tools of the trade over the years so not starting from scratch but paint alone was almost £100. my late dad was a painter & dec to trade , he always said if you use cheap paint you use twice as much and it fades twice as quickly.
@shinnam
@shinnam 2 года назад
Spot on about painting not being cheap. I live in the EU, and because of the environmental impact they have put big restrictions on paint manufacturers. Even buying bulk 12 liters of paint( 3.5 gallons) will cost around €260 ($280) And there is an environmental impact from the use of paint. I know of a Home improvement chain that throws away any mismatch paint instead of selling it at a discount.

I live in Indiana... one of the most affordable states to live. I just had 80% of my 2000sf house painted, some of the woodwork, and the wallpaper removed in the kitchen. It was $5000!
@shinnam
@shinnam 2 года назад
Paint ain't cheap in Sweden. Ceapest paint I can find is about €12 a litre and I have to buy 20 litres to get it at that price. ( about $45 a gallon, have to buy more than 5 gallons) If I just want a litre it is about €25.

Yes! So tired of "farmhouse chic" that HGTV crammed down everyone's throats. Barn doors, dirty floor planks, faux distressed everything, absurdly oversized clocks, and signs & lettering everywhere! None of this is going to age well.

I followed your advice with drapes in my house and you can only imagine the difference from the way the house looked in the realtor’s photos that show the curtains before that landed just beneath the windowsill on rods that were maybe 1/4” . I’m so happy with the way my windows turned out and none of the drapes are custom. I was so afraid of making a mistake with window treatments in my last home that all I had were honeycomb shades in the windows and the rooms never looked finished. Kisses on Albert’s VERY sweet nose! What a love!

I love, love, love yellow but a nice buttery yellow. It can be formal or casual. And it blends well with any holiday decorating - Christmas, Thanksgiving, springtime, etc. For me, a pure clean yellow is a neutral. Thanks for pointing out that while painting is relatively inexpensive, it's not cheap and it's time consuming. You channel is the most practical yet still inspiring decorating channel on RU-vid. Yes agree. We have ¼ strength buttermilk from when our house was built in 1997. It has really stood the test of time as it's not bright yellow so it's not overwhelming & acts like a neutral. Also it wipes up well. Am thinking of changing it to pale Sage... but am getting out voted. Looks like as trends turn around we may just refresh with ¼ buttermilk.

Thank you for saying painting is not cheap and not easy. I find it quite an effort to get all the stuff in front of the wall away, preventing splattering, taping, doing even coats, wash the rollers without making my sink into a war zone. And the awful smell of regular fresh wallpaint. If you are allergic to house dust and the smell of paint, it is an enourmous task. In the time it took to clear and paint my whole bedroom (in non smelly, put streaky mineral paint) I could build a bed, a bookshelf and probably a table in my workshop.

I have hardwood floors throughout the house. Problems: cold floors in the winter, hard surface for young children who fall down. Wood floors echo whereas carpeting makes a room quiet and cozy. I keep the playroom/TV room carpeted.

Well, that damask wallpaper looks really, really good in some French (or other, but I speak of what I know) places with Very High ceilings and a 18th-19th century vibe.. and sometimes walls from back then, too. :-) (Not museums, places where actual people live, but want to roll with the house’s original style)

Plantation Shutters have taken on a new meaning especially here in CO, both for energy efficiency in winter (keep our homes insulated) and summer (high altitude we face south at 7000 feet, help keep our a/c energy bills down) What are your thoughts on Plantation Shutters and pairing or not pairing drapes, black out shades under the shutters? I have never liked the open concept where several "rooms" exist in one space. Nothing about it appeals to me. If you have an open kitchen with a living area, no one can watch TV without hearing banging pots, the dishwasher, running water, etc. Aside from all that, it is not cozy, which is something I really appreciate-that sense of privacy and enclosure where you can truly relax. And aside from all that, it must run up the heating and air conditioning bill. And finally, many of them look like banks and doctor's waiting rooms. OK, there I said it.

They are my least favourite thing as well! I've actually worked in 'high end' households with these open concept things and there is nothing worse than giving a party where the guests have full view of what's going on in the kitchen! I always thought that as one got wealthier you would have more delineation of spaces....

Thank you for calling out yellow, I still have nightmares about rentals I've lived in ,especially in the 2000s, where I had to endure tired looking magnolia walls and navy carpets. I know people like to poo poo people that paint lots of walls white and grey but honestly it's cheaper and easier to layer up if you want to change your mind about colour schemes etc.

Hello 👋 Albert is adorable 🥰 always great to see him and his brother. I have large tiled floors in part because of where I live it just makes more sense, but I’ve always loved wooden floors and had them in the states. I wasn’t fortunate enough to get the porcelain wood like tiles that I wanted because they where out of stock and only had ones that came in wood tones that are gray and blue etc.. I’ve never seen a gray or blue tree 😂 so I chose a “parkay oak wood” look tile and I’m very happy with it, I had to be because that flooring is not going anywhere ever. Great video as always 😉

Thanks Celeste! I don't know what to advise as I would have to see the space and know your design objectives. If you don't want it, as it is fine wood please make sure it goes to someone who will love it, and not a person that's going to paint it. Just donating it will not in itself protect if from furniture flippers or people not seasoned or knowledgeable about fine woods who may very well paint it or paint and sell it to make a buck. I think that's horrible to do with fine woods, and should be protected against as much as possible.

I so wish I could be rid of wall to wall on my bedroom level. Not only can I not get rid of it I will have to replace it. It came with my mid-century modern. Due to the main floor being open to the upper level having the wood floors underneath the carpet redone isn't an option. Two companies have told me that we need to have the entire bedroom level moved out, the main level furniture wrapped to protect it and we would need to move out for a week and of course there is the expense. So more wall to wall it will be. I have already picked out something that seems to agree with your recommendations. I do have hardwood on most of my main level. ,

For those with wall to wall carpet and pets….to get urine and other stains out: mix half water and white vinegar in a spray bottle spray on stain, cover with a white folded towel and put something very heavy on top for at least 24 hours. The weight will push the water/vinegar into the towel and the vinegar will remove the stain … 95% of the time. You might need to repeat the process a few times, but it really works.

Another great video! And Albert is so cute! Am I alone in liking those earthy yellow tones? I've done my place in greens, browns, yellows, ochres, gold and warm off-whites. It's probably not been fashionable as a colour scheme for a very long time (I think 'greenery-yallery' was a thing back in the late 1800s) but I find it really natural and soothing. I'm of the opinion that there are no inherently bad colours, just bad combinations and contexts. My flooring is currently wood laminate which was here when I moved in. Despite the place being tiny, they managed to install a different kind in every room: none of it matches. I didn't notice until I moved in and now I can't unsee it! I'd love to replace it all with some real wood flooring but I can't see me having the budget to do that any time soon. Wall-to-wall carpet is very common here in the UK but I definitely prefer natural wood or tile with some nice rugs.

I'm redoing a very large patio and I'm thinking of doing outdoor rough (ish) wood porcelain tile for a portion of it. I fell in love with it at the belgard studio. I never thought I'd consider it, but here I am! I'm glad to know you love yours. 🙂

Another great video, Garrett. I always liked wall to wall carpet because I love the hotel suite look, but I would never have it. I don't think is healthy. I was very surprised that you are not a fan of Damask patterns. I find them absolutely gorgeous and elegant. My bedroom has it, but like you always say, if it makes me happy, then it is the right thing for me😍 Albert is precious. Thank you for sharing his story. Thank you for giving him so much love and the life that he deserves ❤

Wall to wall carpeting is the WORST! I have asthma and it almost always guarantees I'll be grabbing my inhaler within a few hours if I am in a w-2-w carpeted room. As for yellow...I love yellow. My bedroom is a bright sunny yellow! But save me from beige...yuck!

yellowy beige walls = blech. Wall to wall carpet = blech. Bulky recliners = blech. white laminate style or shrink wrapped cabinets = blech. Granite look laminate counters = blech. I could go on, but I won't. Love those for no-one.

Omg... I've never seen or heard about these tiny curtain rods before but I chortled at those photos. What a strange thing to do! I don't know if it's still considered trendy but I still see tons of live edge furniture in stores. In general just not really a fan of it but I in particular despise the live edge tables with epoxy. I used to see them in my feeds all the time and wonder who was actually buying these things.

You are good people for caring for Albert, most people shy away from pets with disabilities, I always had a younger one and a senior dog and love them, they are so grateful and so deserving of a loving forever home...great video and I also do not like all that you mentioned, last time I had carpet was in 1985 and it was a half white berber with a pattern, not bad but since then I had and have wooden floors, they are the best and with pets they are easy to clean and always beautiful, thanks for another great video, kisses to Albert.

Addressing the color yellow. Throughout history it was believed that the color yellow encouraged happiness and cheerfullness. In fact, it was prominent in mental asylums until the 1940's for exactly that reason, in which time discoved yellow had opposite effect on behavior and the use of blues and greens became popular for that enviornment. In polite conversation it was customary to refer to insane asylums as "The Yellow House"; example: "Doris, did you hear, Gladys that lives down the street is visiting the yellow house. But you didn't hear that from me."

My husband is a carpet and rug designer. Broadloom is necessary for certain commercial spaces, but for a home, rugs are the best. In bedrooms, imo, especially colder climates, roomsize or wall-to-wall rugs - thick and fabulous! Oh and always wool, as it's easy to clean, doesn't off gas, eco-friendly and sustainable. and nearly fire proof.
@GarrettLeChic
@GarrettLeChic 2 года назад
I’m sure your husband does a great job, but wall to wall carpets in homes are not the best option nor the most sought after floor covering anymore. I will say a beautiful wall to wall silk carpet in a primary bedroom could be very lovely as long as the occupants can deal with its delicate structure. Hard wood floors are a much more sought after surface along with marble in certain areas than wall to wall carpet. When we look at a home that has wall to wall we are immediately calculating the cost to replace it with hardwood. Plus the off gassing, smell/dirt collectors, allergy irritating are all problematic features of wall to wall. Hardwoods and some beautiful Turkish, Persian or Oriental area rugs give a much more elevated look than wall to wall carpeting.
@mardeesmail

@@GarrettLeChic I concur. He designs axminster for commercial spaces mostly, but occasionally he'll design for a home. He recently designed a silk and wool blend, 80 oz / yd2, room sized rug for a client for his bedroom at 90K.

When I moved into my 1970 ranch (after selling my 1924 home) I put carpet in my living room. Shameful, maybe, but in our cold region and having lived with hardwoods throughout the old home, I was done feeling cold! We have lvp through the rest of the main house, but the bedrooms and den (along with my living room) are all going to eventually be low pile carpet! Trust me, my feet and pugs thank me every winter! Haha

I just HATE those neon coloured LED strip lights that a lot of people in my country think are cool to install around the ceiling hidden by gypsum boards that are used to create a dropped ceiling effect. Also hate the damask pattern wallpaper walls. Just this morning saw a real estate agency photo of a home with a bedroom that has both of these.. terrible!

We all have our color preferences, but I am SO tired of gray everywhere! Yes, it is neutral; yes it it can be combined with a variety of other colors - but many gray spaces look like black and white photos. Gray just seems gloomy to me, and it appears to be the default color for so many new homes and "for resale" paint jobs. Who wants to live in a storm cloud? And in EVERY room?
@GarrettLeChic

I agree. I don't advocate grey being used throughout a home. I mean if a person actually likes that color that's different.

I agree. In my new home, i had my cathedral ceiling bedroom painted BM silver cloud, and my cathedral ceiling living room inBM Devon Cream, both with white trim, and just the window sashes left a medium wood. The wood living room ceiling is also painted the same color. I Love love love it. The room was really really dark before and now it is light but also warm and inviting. Devon Cream is a warm, yellow-ish offwhite, but not beige at all. Light and happy. I am going to paint the kitchen the same color.

First off Albert is so sweet, he makes upur teeth hurt ❤️❤️. Onto your question.. i really fo not like and never liked the look of granite counters. Im probably in the minority. Wood floors do look good, but acoustically they can turn a room very shouty, when one is entertaining. I think I'm going to leave the room with a piano in it with just the wooden floors, but put a big rug in the room where there will be more talking and mingling...
