Painting of good quality furniture hurts my soul! Antiques and MCM being “farmhouse flipped” is the worst. If you want to paint your own furniture, go for it, but people need to stop scooping up quality pieces and flipping for resale. Pretty soon it’s going to be difficult to find beautiful wood pieces because they’ll all have a coat of Dixie Belle on them. If you’re going to paint furniture, do your research first and know what you’ve got. Grandma’s Broyhill Brasília China hutch is worth a lot more in its original condition than it is with a coat of chalk paint. If my furniture is sold off, after I die to a furniture flipper, I’m coming back and haunting them. I wouldn’t be evil. I’d put burnt toast crumbs in their butter, mix peanut butter in the jelly, put Nair in their shampoo bottle, (ok that one is kind of evil).

One of my favorite rooms in the house is my grandmother in laws old dining room set(table, china cabinet, and buffet). It’s “outdated” cherry, but it is REAL wood and so much sturdier than any modern piece of crap I could purchase within my budget. 🤷🏼‍♀️

I love painting furniture. I refuse to paint antiques unless they are heavily damaged and need repair to a degree that can't be repaired and keep the nice wood veneer, etc. Also, do not use oven cleaner to strip furniture, use Citristrip or Blue Bear soy gel stripper. Very safe chemicals for what they do.

Sorry, I’m going to get spicy here, but I’m a geology nerd, so the idea of covering a stone as beautiful as granite with something as man-made as epoxy stings me to the soul. It’s like trading a waygu beef burger for McD’s. They’re both going to fill a need but like…. Choices.

LOVED this video! It wasn't antique, but about 10 years ago, I just about cried when my mom painted a TEAK storage bench from my childhood room! TEAK! That said, painting wood is something I notice people arguing about all the time. Some people believe wood should never be painted, while others would go ahead and paint Queen Victoria's tea table if they could. Have you ever done (or would you consider doing) a video specifically on what is worth preserving, what can be refinished without losing historical or aesthetic value, and what is okay to paint? I am all for saving worthy pieces, but some folks do get up in your grill over painting mass-produced Sears catalogue repros, for example, even when it's something that could be stripped down later....
@GarrettLeChic
@GarrettLeChic 2 года назад
Hi Dodie! It's my opinion that all fine and exotic woods should be preserved and never painted. The only exception is if refinishing experts agree the furniture is in such bad condition, it can't be refinished or preserved. I've said that is a few videos now so I probably won't address it again for a while.

Hi Garrett, As a paint & Decorator of 25 yrs I hate (yes hate!) seeing people ruin beautiful antiques by painting them. These people have no idea on how to treat the old timber or how to look after it and as for the oven cleaner...NO! As you said, happily go paint the yellow pine but please leave the antiques and old wood furniture alone because it's worth more as it is than after it's had a tonne of cheap paint slapped all over it.

Garrett, I so, so agree with your comments about painting antique furniture. I have recently had a horrible revelation. I'm working on updating my will and want to figure out who should receive particular things I own. One of those things is a unique rocking chair designed and produced by a timber craftsman here in Australia. He made the most beautiful furniture out of local timbers. Some of those timbers are now unavailable. We bought the chair as an anniversary present for ourselves because we love its shape and style. I asked my daughter if it is something she would like when we die, she said "yes, but I've got to tell you, I'll paint it". Once I'd recovered from the fainting attack and picked my jaw up off the floor, I made a note that she should never be bequeathed that chair. I don't know where I went wrong! I've raised a barbarian! I'd rather see it sold to someone who would love it than see it painted.

The other thing I’m seeing is decoupaging whole pictures on antique furniture. And the OVEN CLEANER WHY? They sell products that strip furniture that’s not as toxic. And the oven cleaner doesn’t look very effective. I’ve seen entertainment units turned into play kitchens. If my kids were little, I would try that upcycle. Some of them are super cute.

Back in the late 70s and early 80s, it was still popular to have your kids baby shoes bronzed - then use them as decor in the living room. I cannot believe I did this. WHY??? There's no undoing it - no going back. Everyone should think twice about permanently altering anything valuable or that has deep sentimental attachment, no matter what the trend-setters do.

Watching this video and then being SO glad I am not on social media! Who comes up with this stuff?! Painting a piece of beautiful wood antique furniture is the worst idea EVER. Some of the RU-vid channels have done this successfully, however, with inexpensive reproductions that have turned out nicely, but they are professionals, not DIYers. The Restoration Hardware look of bare or stripped repurposed lumber can get old really fast... not my style. That reminds me of college days and the Berkeley Bookcase of bricks and boards. Been there, done that. I'd rather haunt a thrift store or estate sale and rescue a long loved but slightly abused piece and bring it back to its former glory. I still want that table behind you in your video. Thanks, Garrett!

Always great advice and you're also funny. I think these "influencers" have been peeking in my windows. My home is 180 yrs old so the kitchen doesn't easily meet modern living. We added shelving into an antique armoire where we store all the pots/pans and most dishes (we also use a pie safe for the food). We're currently in the process of converting a TV armoire into a wet bar. Ours have the doors that slide in because we didn't want our drunk friends handing on the doors. We're adding a small sink and a fridge. It took us about 5 years to find one that would accommodate what we wanted (and still look like an antique). We also try to upcycle where possible. During renovations, we had to remove some damaged flooring. It's heart pine, 6 inches wide and 1 inch thick. We had it planed. It will use it for our kitchen island top.

I am always so happy to see a new video for you. For all the”worsts” it seems like the common thread is taking something fake and making something look cheaper. Adding foam to curtains is silly. Real stained wood is so beautiful and shouldn’t be painted. And the last before/after photo of the gorgeous granite covered in epoxy made me want to weep. Garrett please talk about or to the social influencers that cut up beautiful sewing machine cabinets into side tables. I saw one from a lovely lady that usually does trash to treasure but she did this singer sewing machine cabinet by separating a working gorgeous ornate antique sewing machine from the matching original cabinet and sliced a section out to make it smaller then covered it in her signature white chalk paint. Quite a few folks found it hard to watch. I did too. Thank you for speaking to trends that have gotten out of hand because we only have a few working survivors and if some fall into hands that won't restore them we'll have even fewer.

I'm tired of how influential some amateur "furniture flippers" are, and the terrible choices they make in "refinishing". Using "hacks" instead of industry appropriate products, and painting for trends more than for restoration and value of the piece. Very few re-stain and polish, or restore original hardware; instead opting for chalk, spray paint and wall paint!!??? No thanks. So far, one of the best furniture flippers I've seen on YT is "Transcend Furniture Gallery". This lady truly understands the value of old antique wood, and knows when to paint or polish a piece. Her "paints" are hand mixed and made for furniture, with real industry products not "hacks". Even her 'trendy" pieces with paint and stain combos are done with appropriate products and careful process. We need more influencers with _real_ knowledge to be at the forefront, not hacks peddling "hacks".

My mother restored fine antique furniture.. She passed away years ago but if she saw people putting chalk paint and other paint on them today she would have a heart attack. Of course, never use oven cleaner oh my gosh. She used Bix. And sweat equity. I've used Citristrip, and the occasional heat gun - carefully - for thickly painted wood like solid antique doors. She often used a mixture with linseed to restore dried and/or stripped wood. Sometimes I use beeswax. She's research each piece and restore it to what was used in its time. A nice trick is using a Brazil nut for thin scratches - lightly press until a bit of its oil comes out. It will disguise the scratch to whatever color wood it is. Another tip for deeper/wider scratches is using tinted beeswax. Softly melt into the scratch/gouge, gently scrape to match the smooth surface, and buff. (Or use the Japanese kintsugi idea of filling it in with gold if that works for you.)

I bought a modern house built in the 90”s with very heavy, custom hinges holding up solid wood doors throughout. The hinges were the yellow-y gold and tarnished did not go with the modern vibe. The intro got me laughing. I love how real and witty you are. I watched all your videos, clearly still discovering some more, and this one is by far m favorite. I wish you had a series to call out what I call “fake good ideas”. It is very helpful as I see those ideas everywhere, they seem to make sense but I do like your insights when it comes to making it real. No showroom type of decoration, no ‘hopping on the trend wagon’, talking about appreciating materials, architecture and design. I love, love, love that you aren’t afraid to call out lack of true appreciation in addition to speaking the truth about the importance of sprinkling your personality into your interior. I do believe you don’t fully know a person (aspirations, personalities, taste and drivers) until you see their homes.

Great advice. I feel you’re singing to the choir here. Especially with regard to painting antiques or even anything artful or beautiful eg granite or beautiful tiles. A little piece of me dies. I love that you highlighted the value of the old exotic woods.

Hooray for Garrett who speaks with the voice of common sense! Why people want to ruin antique furniture by painting them, i will never know. I don't like the sound of oven cleaner for stripping furniture either. Great video, as usual. Love from Paris xxx

Merci, Merci Georgina! I’m so glad you enjoyed the video. I remember a few years ago we were in Paris for Christmas time. It was so cold, but we still walked or had a car take us many places and had a lovely time. I think I had escargot every day lol. Always great to hear from you! Bonsoir. 😁😁😁

I plastered over 90's tile in my kitchen and we love it. I thought I was so original until I saw this video lol! We knew down the road we were going to tear it all out anyway but for now, it's really brought new life to our kitchen. I did seal it with minwax Polycrylic for random food splatters (red sauce no thank you). It's been a few months and it's perfect still!
