Most of the plants you have chosen make great air purifiers. They are also easy to reproduce. My favorite plant is Zamioculcas, because of its botanical heritage...

Can you do Entryways, small entryways in particular AND duel-purpose rooms? OR... can you do an episode where you advise which interior design goes with which exterior. For example, mid-century modern interior design wouldn’t look right in an old Victorian or super modern in a farmhouse. 😬 I have a 1940’s bungalow and wondering what’s the proper interior style.

As a plant person, I would like to advise that you plant the plant in a pot with drainage holes and you put them into decorative pots. So that you can keep them happy by not keeping their feet (roots) wet.

I went with her snake plant suggestion. It’s a dark corner that gets light from the door windows but that’s it. You’re so right on the pot! I had to hunt every shelf of Home Depot to find it, but I did. A gorgeous tall, black, waved-wood, with built-in drainage section at the bottom that’s invisible from the outside. The cost was $80 and considering the flower shop had the same thing for $250 (which is what I was looking to find), I think I made out ok. There’s too many pots out there with either no holes for drainage or make you buy an underplate that looks horrible for any bigger piece that stands out as part of the decor. The only thing I can add is to remember to pack the dirt because it sunk a good inch already and I’ll be carefully re-doing the snake plant seating today. Hope it doesn’t settle that much again.

My secret weapon for plants is not to take them out of their original container. My plant shop told me that and it works. My Fiddle Leaf, after 5 years is about 7 feet tall.

I accidentally left a pothos plant in my darkened classroom over the summer - over two months without water or sunlight! Yes, the poor thing looked quite dead when I discovered it in August, but I decided to water it and give it some sunlight anyway. Much to my surprise, it came back to life! Truly, a fool-proof plant! (From the fool who left it in the classroom all summer!)

Hi Lisa, I live in UK, my husband was qualified interior designer/architect. He died 15 years ago, so you can imagine that watching you brings back all of what he used to advise. Even this video about plants is part of design. You forgot the aspidistra, a plant very popular in Victorian times which is virtually indestructible. Best wishes, JS

Hello Lisa! I am actually an avid plant enthusiast and highly experienced gardener (indoor and out). I absolutely adore the fact you are encouraging people to consider incorporating plants into their room design. A couple of helpful hints are that Fiddle Leaf Figs can be very tricky! As you mentioned, Bright indirect light is a MUST. I would also suggest purchasing a moisture meter if you’re new to this plant. They are very inexpensive, usually under $10, and really help make sure you are not under or over watering your plant. They also do not like to be moved, so if you’re a person who constantly rearrange his furniture, please leave your FLF in the place where it has been happy! Another key point for anyone considering a Monstera Deliciosa is that you CAN train them to a pole and prune to help control the shape. One of the BEST PLACES to incorporate plants into is actually your KITCHEN! Consider starting an indoor herb garden and you can enjoy both the look of the plants and fresh herbs for cooking with all year long!

@@LisaHoltDesign my outdoor garden is a container garden, because right now I am living in a temporary spot until building material price is level out and I can afford to build my home on the land I purchased. I have also lived in under 1,000 sq. ft. forever so I have some great ideas for indoor gardening in small spaces.

Cheaper options for plant decor: propagation and papier-mâché. If you have willing friends and patience, you can grow your own plants by getting cuttings from friends. Most larger cities also have gardening clubs where people exchange plants. Meetup has garden clubs too. Yes you can mail plant cuttings. You just have to figure out the particulars for the plant in question. A great trick is to put a planter facade around a cheap planter. You can just reuse your cans & bottles for plants and then use papier-mâché to cover them up. Papier-mâché can be made to look like anything and it can be made waterproof.

In deep shade you can also go ahead and invest the big money in a large Fiddle Ficus. They can live well in near dark. The less light, the slower they grow, so buy the exact size for the scale of your space.

Grow lights are no longer the expensive impractical thing they once were. You can now get LED grow lights that screw into your existing, conventional fixtures. The only catch is that the light is very white, like sunlight, not like the amber glow we typically prefer indoors. If that’s an issue you may want to put it on a timer so it runs when you’re not home (sounds wasteful, but these are LED lights, running on pennies a day).

The Snake Plant comes from Africa. In native African language, its name means "Mother-In-Law's Tongue". It is really hard to kill.

They need a special variety with razor blade edges to match my ex-mother-in-law’s tongue. For reference: my daughters call their grandparents He Devil and She Devil. It’s not just me who sees their “special” qualities. ;-)

Phew. I thought I was delusional for a moment. It’s probably great for staging a place, ie where you don’t have to worry about its long-term survival, and is a decor magazine and insta favorite, but it is quite...umm...fiddly.

Hello, Lisa! What you called Snake Plant is called Saint George's Sword (Espada de Sao George) in Brasil. It's traditionally planted in vases, or on the ground, near the entrance gate and/or the entrance door, as a protection statement to homes and businesses. It also a plant that acts as an active air cleaner in rooms inside a building.

I saw the most beautiful planters of succulents at a local restaurant. The variety of textures and subtle colors was amazing. I like these better than spiny cacti.

Hi Lisa, Another wonderful video. Thanks! Pothos is poisonous to dogs and cats. I have a snake plant my father gave to my mother 70 years ago! I’ve nursed it through root rot, dehydration, and abandonment. Its progeny grace more pots. It has lasted long enough to be a member of the family and take on a personality of its own. And, it is a living reminder of my parents, long passed away. A beautiful, if finicky, addition to home decor is a fig tree - ficus benjamina. I also like hibiscus standards. I have found that a floor display of three plants of different heights and leaf shapes placed in colour-coordinated ceramic containers in an empty corner, particularly if lit from underneath with a therapeutic grow light, is a really lush addition to any room.

Another fav of mine is bamboo. It will live anywhere inside and even do without water for lenghts of time. I like to get neat square glass jars from Dollar Tree (in the candle dept.), and fill with stones from the craft dept. and arrange the bamboo within the stones and add water.

For easy care I’d add Tradescantia for some shades of silvery purple. It’s another good one for hanging, and can handle any light and a lot of neglect. In fact, I over-grew and over-neglected mine to the point where the top was droopy and dead, but it had some great growth on the end, so I just clipped off the good parts, propagated in water, and replaced the old dying plant with the little re-rooted clippings. Another beautiful and highly resilient one that handles low light is the Peace Lily.

Want to make a note to other people with pets: know what your plants are and whether or not they're poisonous before you bring them in your space. Also, I have a cat who is obsessed with plants and is determined to murder the four in my kitchen, so I unabashedly purchased a silk plant for the living room. So far it's standing up well to the attentions of Howie, and there's no dirt to clean up the two or three times he's managed to knock it over.

There are cat deterring mulches that will keep kitty out. Unpleasant texture-- not poisonous. None of my fur beasts have ever been plant munchers thankfully. Just had a couple of cats that liked digging in the dirt. Cayenne, citrus peels, aluminum foil, and pinecones are fairly inexpensive cat deterrence options. I like plastic mesh covered with decorative rocks. My current pet/plant conflict is a large dog with zero spatial awareness. I have to both weight and glue down plant pots (earthquake putty). I also have to keep plants out of tail range. My happy boy will beat a plant to death.

Pothos was a housewarming/Christmas gift from my friend and it helped me feel confident in getting more plants! So my second one is a snake plant. Starting small and simple but I do love the look of Fiddle Leaf Figs

As a plant freak, let me say you are doing exactly the right thing. This is what I tell people all the time: control your enthusiasm. Start slow. Learn how to manage that first plant, then move onto the second. It’s easy to get carried away, buy a dozen, half of them die anc you don’t know why, you get discouraged, and irs no fun any more.

@@aimeeontheharp I actually find them surprisingly easy to care for. Water sparingly every few days, keep in bright indirect sun, and that’s that. I had one that lasted years and that’s all I did. I never even fed it. And the blooms also SO long.

Plants! Most every one of those grows in my neighborhood (I got photos I can prove it ). Ecuador is an amazing plant place. And while I'm going to leave the plants out of my indoor space for now I am getting great ideas for my very Boho meets Gilligan's Island veranda -- the big red Otovalo print hammock went up this week and a cute royal blue hammock chair. I can see green as a break between the red hand-made brick of the house wall and the red of the hammock (which was bothering me a bit). I LOVE my Saturday coffee date with my favorite home designer!

You are speaking my language! I have plants indoors and outdoors. One that requires a lot of water but is happy most anywhere is a peace lily. I recently bought a root bound peace lily at a thrift store for five bucks, took it home, divided it to make four new plants! Talk about design that keeps giving!!

I also love heart-leaf philodendron and find it easy to grow. I love the hammered metal pot from West Elm you linked and was thinking it would be perfect for a philodendron or pathos. Loved this video. Heartily endorse monstera. And it doesn't need tons of light. Ours is happy in a north facing room. A real bonus is you can pull a small section (Google instructions) of 5 or so fronds/leaves to put in a jug or vase on the mantle and it will last forever--ours has been going strong for a year or so. You can use this method to start a new plant as a gift, too.

I'm lucky to be working in tropical greenhouses all winter, especially since where i live is so cold! (Québec Can.) The secret is DRAINAGE: Roots need to breathe air otherwise they rot. Therefore the soil can't remain water saturated. It's VERY important to always empty the remaining water in the pot holder after watering. In fall, when days are getting shorter, you can almost stop watering, especially the succulents; As soon as the days start to get longer, water normally, every two weeks; If you put your plants outside during the summer, then you can water them every day and give 20-20-20 liquid fertilizer (every 2 weeks or very dilluted each time.) No fertilizer during fall and early spring. Wait for the growing season.

Thanks, Lisa! I’ve found that Dracaenas are my favorite, a good assortment of varieties, (stripey Marginata and Warneckii are classics) and they only need me to remember to water them every 3-4 weeks. Sometimes they get kind of tall, (3+ feet, not huge) then they look a bit like palm trees, which is nice. But to get them back to being nice and bushy, there’s a way to grow new roots high up on the stem, called air layering. After which, replanting makes them all full again. Fairly slow growing, not fussy about light. The occasional brown tip? I just scissor it off at an angle, so the leaf still looks cool and pointy!
