Hi Mike, do you feel 16/8 is something you should do long term ? Im doing it now and seeing great results with weight training.You mentioned 5 weeks? What if I want to do this forever ?is there negative effects long term?

I do feel better with an 18 hour fast, and I’m not regular. Sometimes I do 14, sometimes 16, 18 or 20. But I really notice the difference starting at 18

From a 32 year old male Canadian. "Hey everyone, I've recently started doing 18-hour fasting, and it's been getting easier each time I try it. Staying busy is key because hunger can really hit, but when you're occupied, you don't think about food as much. Yesterday, I stopped eating at 5 p.m., and I'm patiently waiting until 11 a.m. today to eat again; just one hour and 30 minutes to go! Keeping busy makes everything smoother, and surprisingly, I don't feel as hungry as I expected. Living in a big family means they eat before me, but I'm learning to enjoy the smells without overthinking it. I still indulge in pizza and burgers occasionally, but having a limited eating window helps me control my portions. Great job to everyone on their fasting journey! Keep it up!"

18/6 is the way to go, 7 days a week if possible ! needs a bit of time to get used too. 13:00: breakfast, 16:00: chicken with rice or some tuna with eggs and noodles, 19:00 dinner and done.

When i started it 6 months ago i used 16-8 for 4 days, after that i immediately switched to 18-6 and i felt huge difference, i alsobtried 20-4 and it was all right if you work from home and you don't have to go to work. I made so much progress that im not doing if anymore, what i do now is one big meal today and i fast for 48 hours, it's not because i want to do it, it more feels like that my brain isn't even thinking about food. Just think about it, out ancestors 400 years ago for example, they would hunt a rabbit, eat it and probably not eat anything for next couple of days until they hunt something else, human body doesn't need so much food to survive, just ask yourself how much money food companies around the world would lose if we all switch to 1 meal a day for example?

I started fasting about 3 months ago. I vary between 16:8 and 18:6 depending on the day. Other than generally feeling great, I noticed a couple things. One is that for the first time in as long as I can remember, I have been sleeping the whole night through. The other thing is something I experienced when I was trying 36 hour fasts a couple years ago and stopped because it caused random pains. I later discovered that was just toxins being released during the autophagy process, but it was unfomfortable. Back to today, the 18:6/16:8 hasn't really caused much of that and I'd have to say that I just feel younger as time goes on.

the sensible voice of reason from an older person with some on the ground experience, thank you. At 62 I found 20:4 I ended up eating too much as I was really hungry, 18:6 and 16:8 now seem so much easier after 20 or 22 hours, so a month on the hard protocol actually helped the slower protocol seem more attainable for me.

Great video. Been losing about 1kg per week last 3 months switching between 16-8 18-6 and omad. I don't plan what days I do which I listen toy body. If I feel low energy I eat more and if I feel like I can go all day without eating I do 20-4 or omad. I think this is good because it reduces stress and hunger. I think this method also prevent your metabolism from slowing down like eating a calorie deficit for a long time does.

I've sort of inadvertently been doing mostly the 18:6 fast for the last month or two in an effort to gain more control over calorie intake and being more intentional about the food quality that I eat. I'll have to test out doing 16:8 and even 20:4. So far I've lost 25 lbs from increased exercise, less alcohol intake, and cutting excess calorie intake. On a side note, I'm not sure if it's just me, but I find that when I break the fast, I get a weird super relaxing feeling almost like I just had a nice hefty pint of high gravity beer. Really pleasant.

I am 5’2 and doing 18/6 IF for three days now. Started from 165 lbs. Lost 4.5 lbs so far. I think it’s just I lost my water weight assuming from how thin my ankles looks now. My goal is to lose additional 45 lbs. I’m eating home cooked meals. Breakfast at 10 am & dinner at 3 pm. Drinking 8-10 cups of water. How long do you think it will take? Thank you Mike. Update. I didn’t mention my date earlier. So I started IF on Jan.13 2022. And now it’s Apr.8 2022. I lost additional 4.5 lbs so far. Now weights 150.8 lbs. The first 4.5lbs I lost in first 3 days, it didn’t show up on my body. It just felt like it detoxed my gut and lost some water fat. But this 4.5 lbs though, it was like real weight I am losing. Because my frame got smaller and I can see difference over my thigh, butt, belly and my arm too. Note that I skipped few days here and there. First I’ve had covid back in Feb so I had to eat whenever I can since it’s already hard to eat because of pain and fever. Skipped like around 10 days there. After that in March we had our daughters bday and international womens day. So again I skipped few days again since there were family occasions. Around mid March I went back on track. Hearty breakfast around 9:30-10:00. Then lunch at 14:30-15:30. It doesn’t feel that hard anymore and I don’t feel that hungry when I’m in bed like I used to. My goal is to lose another 30 lbs. I’ll keep updating till I get my goal. Update. July 22. 154 lbs. I stopped IF from May but then started from July 19. Update. September 08. 147 lbs. Still doing IF but sometimes I don’t feel hungry in the morning so some days I did OMAD without intention. Now need to lose 20lbs. People at work told me that I look smaller than ever and asked how I did. I told them what I wrote here about my experience with IF. It actually feels good and easier than ever. Oh and I never did any specific diet or keto. I afraid if keto might not be suitable for my kidneys. I eat home cooked meals, restaurant food and fast food too. One thing I noticed is I don’t crave for carbonated drink/coke like I used to be. For people reading this -start from today. If u lose track, then start from the next day. Slowly but surely we’ll get to our goal :) Update. December 30. Now I am 140 lbs. Lost 25lbs in almost a year. Only 8 lbs more to lose now. It got much easier. Also I do eat lunch and dinner for about 3 to 4 days in a month because of some unpredicted dinner or some parties. But still losing my weight slowly. Happier than ever. Getting so many compliments from my coworkers and friends. My clothing size went S from L.

The second day went smooth only issue sleeping was not so good. Third day was good but felt a bit dizzy every time i stand out of the bed or the chair at work and forth day too. At the end of the 96 hours i ate not because i was so hungry but because i was a bit worry of not being hungry anymore!! Weird thing is i didn't lose much of weight, i was 55KG and at the end it was 54.2kg. probably will do it again at least twice a month

I hardly feel deprived during my 18:6 window. Maybe I’m eating just enough, if not more? Can’t complain though Sometimes I feel a bit hungry or tempted to eat a few hours before my first meal but my mornings are usually so busy I can easily distract myself For context, first meal is at 12:30pm, snack at 3:00pm and around 6/6:30 I have one last meal for the day. My meals in my opinion are average size but I do eat whatever I want, normally subway, or rice and tuna, and can’t forget two cookies for desert and some fruit for snack at 3pm

I've been doing close to 18:6 for years without even knowing it was a thing. I never like eating in the morning..weak stomach. Would always eat lunch between 12 and 1. then dinner between 5 and 6. Rarely eat in the evening as it doesnt feel good to go to to bed on with food in your stomach. 4-6 hours after dinner seems ideal...before going to bed to avoid discomfort.

Explaining the differences between 16/8 and 18/6 is very useful, and you explained it well. Thank you. But I have two questions: 1. How do you define fasting? Nothing by mouth at all, or are liquids okay? If liquids are allowed, which liquids? Water, coffee and tea, juices, etcetera? 2. On a completely different subject, you’ve got a fantastic accent. What part of the Northeast are you from?
@MikeCola
@MikeCola Год назад
There are varied interpretations of fasting among people. While some individuals associate it with a surge in insulin levels or restricting oneself to fluids, I personally regard it as severely limiting calorie intake. As such, consuming beverages such as black coffee or plain tea with negligible calorie content is acceptable, and I even consider adding a splash of lemon juice to water permissible. On a separate note, I hail from New York, specifically born in the Bronx and raised in Westchester. I often receive remarks about my accent. Warm regards, Mike.

I have try intermittent fasting many times but working overnights 12 hours 7pm-7am, I always give in because be so hungry while working overnight. I break it over night or eat as soon I get off work. Any suggestions for those who work overnight? What times should I start the 16:8 fasting?

Hi Lavell, You really have to experiment and find what works best for you. If you're getting hungry you might want to switch to more of a low-carb type diet. I have a number of videos on the channel all about eating low carb. Plus, Some people find drinking black coffee, tea or a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar in mineral water are all good ways to suppress your appetite. I hope this helps. Best - Mike

I work swing shifts 6p-6a or 6a-6p.. I'm doing 18:6 from 2-8p regardless what shift I'm on. When I'm working dayshift I just hold off until then. It's hard but drinking black coffee and water really helps. When I work night shift I usually wake up around 2 so I eat right away and then usually have a lighter meal when I get to work between 6 and my window closing at 8. I'd like to eventually try every other day and see how that works but didn't want to dive into that so 18:6 for a while. I just started a week ago and it's been going so well!

If you eat a low carb whole food diet and do 18:6, you should lose 3 or 4 pounds the first week (mostly water weight) and 1% to 2% of your body weight per week going forward. So to lose 23 pounds, you can do it in 6 to 12 weeks. I know that's a big range, but it depends how strict you are with the diet. I hope this helps. Best - Mike

I feel like the amount of water you have to drink to sustain yourself during a fast is underrated too as many people don't talk about it and i feel that it's the main reason people don't feel the urge to drink soda and are more interested in eating good food when the time comes as your body feels clean and ruining it with junk food doesn't appeal to you as much. Hi Nee Lim, Nice job 👍...you lost a lot of weight pretty quickly doing 18:6. I think it was a good idea to take a diet break. It's tough to keep losing weight that quickly. If you're still losing about 1% of your body weight per week doing an 18:6, I would stay with it. If you want to try something new, I would mix it up a little. Don't to 18:6 every day. Cycle your calories by doing different intermittent fasting strategies. One day do 18:6 the next 16:8, then try an OMAD day. I would also focus on food quality. Sir for order of exercise would it makes sense to go straight from a pull-up to a horizontal row. The concept is to do bigger compound movements in the beginning but in this case there will be no energy for the rows. What should I do?
@MikeCola
@MikeCola 4 года назад
The main drawback of that approach is the weak link...the "biceps" will be tired from the pull-ups and will have a hard time performing horizontal rows. But try it anyway and see how it goes. You can also try a reverse Pre-exhaustion. After your pull-ups try a dumbbell or standing cable pull-over. It takes the biceps out of the movement and hits the back pretty well. Hope this helps. This is pretty easy 18-6 because .I never did eat breakfast or lunch until 4 just wasn't hungry until around 4 so I eat a meal at 4 and another again .like 8 a light one pm is my big one I drink lots of water too. Cut bad on soda I refuse to give up soda all together. I like only tap water I got it next to my bed at night. I can't exercise bc I had foot surgery and will take up to a year to heal . So this works perfect for me. I always thought if you don't exercise you can't loose thats wrong. Once my year I can't walk without my foot hurting I can't wait to get back to walking I love walking so much it was my thing everyday I feel someone took something away from me but one day again probably 8 months I will be walking the pavement or treadmill

Hi Cubamex, the calories are a little low but you seem to be doing so well I would stay with it for a week or two. Then try to go 10 times your bodyweight. For example if you are 180 pounds try for 1,800 calories. It's also good to cycle your calories...It will minimize the slow down in your metabolism due to weight loss (metabolic adaptation). So you can do 1,200 cal for a couple of days and then go to 10 times your bodyweight. Thanks for watching the video. Hope this helps Best - Mike

It’s really all about calories and food quality. If you’re eating well and keeping calories under control within a 12 hour eating window that can work well for you. There are benefits to fasting for 18 hours, such as keeping insulin levels low and increasing your insulin sensitivity but in my opinion, the biggest benefit for most people is just eating less food, it puts them into a calorie deficit from the small eating window.

@MikeCola 4 года назад
Hi Jaspreet, There was a rat study that shows some adverse hormonal effects for women, but Dr. Jason Fung addressed that question here: www.dietdoctor.com/can-intermittent-fasting-cause-hormonal-imbalances-women Over the years, I have had female clients miss periods from not eating enough and exercising too much, and they were not fasting. But I have heard of women having hormonal issues with fasting, but men do too. If you are concerned, talk about it with your doctor. Plus, I don't prescribe extended fasting. I recommend shorter intermittent type fasting protocols like 16:8, 20:4, OMAD, and a 24 hour fast now and then. I also recommend taking a break from fasting regularly. I think the women who had trouble in the past are doing extended fasting without a doctor's guidance. If you want to try intermittent fasting, start easy, and see how you feel. Skip breakfast or dinner once or twice a week and see how it goes. I hope this helps Best - Mike

Its a little weak...you can eat breakfast, lunch and dinner on a 16:8. Just no snacking in the evening. Go for 18:6. Skip breakfast...eat lunch at noon and dinner between 5 and 6.

Hi Caroline, I think you can but I would check with your doctor.

@@MikeCola hey thanks Mike. I've been doing the 18/6 for 5 days with orlistat but didn't tell my Dr 😢. I feel absolutely fine though, just wondered. Thanks again!

I think you'll be OK too... I just don't want to contradict anything your doctors telling you. One of my client is on it now and it's working pretty well for her. Best - Mike

Thats pretty extreme dude. 18-6 is as far as I normally want to go. A 24 hr fast every now and then is okay too.
