I started intermittent fasting on a 18/6 schedule and to my surprise all my symptoms disappeared and my liver enzymes returned to normal. I am now at almost 3 months of this schedule and my enzymes have dropped even further and my joint pain has greatly improved as well I find this manner of eating very easy, and will continue for the rest of my life. One thing I find interesting is the assumptions made about women over 60 being less inclined to change. My observation as someone hurtling through my 60s at breakneck speed is that people remain largely as they were when younger, despite the body aging. I’ve just sold one home, moved into my former rental, and am traveling multi-state looking or my next home. I don’t have time to get “old.” It’s stasis that ages people.
@susieinthecountry4434
@susieinthecountry4434 4 года назад
very glad that you are breaking the rules and changing the meaning of "old". Those old models for age need to be shattered and show younger people a new model of how to look and feel in the future (even if they are not interested in it).

Why would people even question if intermittent fasting is good for women over 60? We are not a subspecies that is not human! Fasting is good for most everyone so long as you do not have any underlying medical conditions that would prevent it. At 67, when I listen to my "health coaches" on RU-vid, I automatically assume that they are including me in their advice.

I'm 70 and have been IF for a couple of years. I started out eating my regular diet (standard American) but transitioned to keto and now keto-vore. I find IF very easy. My usual is 17 hours fasting but I do an occasional longer fast and find it very doable. I wasn't terribly obese but my weight is down probably 50 pounds from my heaviest several years ago. I work out at least 5 days a week and feel great.

I will be 62 in August. I have been practicing IF since 2017. I started with a 16/8 window and now I do 20/4 with a 24 hour fast once a week. Occasionally, I will do a 32 or 36 hour fast. Besides Keto, this is one of the best things I've ever done for myself. I love it, it's easy, and I just can't imagine going back to eating 3 times a day. A few years ago when they said we should be eating 3 meals and 3 snacks, I tried it a few days and it was torture. I was constantly having to think about food and what I was going to eat and when. IF is so much easier. And, it's flexible. If something comes up and I'm invited to dinner (I generally do breakfast/lunch) I go and eat and just make adjustments the next day. You create your own timing for what works best for you. I highly recommend.
@susieinthecountry4434
@susieinthecountry4434 4 года назад
yes to all your thoughts. My sister freaks out when I say I fast on Monday. I'm a slow weight loser. Now that you mention it when eating the SAD diet that's all one is thinking about is is food. Now I have to ask myself if I'm hungry or not. She will be surprised at how I look when I see her again (who knows when that will be with this virus). Many in my family don't like the idea of the food police which apparently they think I am. So I have found what works for me♥

Eating out for a meal with friends is difficult. I found myself avoiding meeting people because of this. I think we feel pressure to eat 3 meals a day. People aren’t always supportive of what you are doing.

It never occurred to me that people were not talking about intermittent fasting for my age group which is 67. The reason it didn't occur to me is that I automatically assumed that I was part of the people they were targetting with their message. I'm not part of a strange subspecies that has to be treated differently then the rest. There might be some health issues that make it difficult but generally speaking, intermittent fasting is for everyone!

I'll be 65 in a couple of weeks and just love IF. I started with 16:8 and moved to OMAD and now I am doing Alternate Day Fasting. This is the easiest way of eating I have ever practiced. The weight is coming off, I don't feel deprived at all, my appetite is great, I'm not hungry and cravings are practically non-existent. I sleep better, have more energy and feel stronger than I have in a very long time. I thank God that I discovered this. I won't ever go back to three squares and snacks. I don't count calories either...I don't feel a need to. It's my new lifestyle and I believe I will age better and live longer and healthier because of it.

Any longer, except by chance, messes with my head and triggers cravings, etc. Playing with relaxing total carbs from 20 to 30 to get more veggies & lowering saturated fat to find best ranges for maintenance. This study helps confirm IF as perhaps the mainstay that is most important. Thanks. You guys are great.

Am 62 and had been doing IF for several years - it held my weight but I could never loose what I'd put on during perimenopause. What finally did the trick was making Monday a liquid day (protein smoothie in the morning, 'gloopy' soup at lunchtime, berry juice in the afternoon and soup again in the evening). Tues and Wed then became my IF days off the back of that - 16/8. The rest of the week I ate normally but watched portion size - but gradually gave up wheat and sugar including alcohol and, sadly, coffee

I don't eat any sweets, cakes or biscuits. I have very poor eyesight. High myopia, detached retina in my 20's, cataracts in my 40's and now advanced glaucoma. I do see an eye specialist regularly. I have heard that IF can improve eyesight so that is why I am so very interested. I've been doing 14:10 IF for awhile and now just have some days when I just eat 2 meals a day. Obviously the researchers are at a younger age where they think that those of us with more life experience are suddenly frail little old ladies! Nevertheless, I do appreciate that the two of you are covering the science as it comes out. Thank you!

I will be 73 in 6 weeks and I started IF 4 1/2 months ago and have lost 55 lbs. I eat 23/1 meaning 23 hours os fasting and eating in a one hour window. High fiber, low carb and 1200 to 1400 calories. It really is not hard to do and when fasting you know you just do not eat anything so it limits snacking.

I do keto, IF (somewhat) and lost 30 lbs relatively fast. However, what’s changed the most for me is that I look much slimmer and my clothes fit better (or loosely). My issue is that I have inertia and am chained to my computer (for my career s(writer/cyber artist/ telephone psychic advisor). I havent touched sugar or processed food for over 20 years. I’ve been in an eating disorders recovery group for years and it has given me a huge amount of useful wisdom about refraining from compulsive eating. (I’m in remission from it.) I do Pilates at home to RU-vid vids but need to get out and walk more. Still, I look pretty hot in tight jeans and fitted shirts. What motivates me is fashion. I’m just happy to be lookin’ good and still getting compliments for the way I dress, wherever I go. Fashion’s my passion…not fancy or fussy, but yeah I like subtle accessories. Keto and IF have helped keep me stylin’. I don’t need to be skinny but Im going to get back to weights and walking more.

Last night (Buenos Aires) I started the fasting plan. I want to lose about 5 kilograms (11 pounds). What most strikes me is that they have clarified that the loss of muscle "mass" is not directly and exclusively linked to diet. A "healthy" diet will help keep the body's tissues in good condition (muscle, kidney, or whatever). Do not incorporate drugs if they are not strictly necessary and sleep well, etc. But adipose tissue is a reserve tissue in all mammals. Let's remember the bears that hibernate, many spend long periods without being able to hunt (forced fasting and at that time they use their reserve tissue = adipose tissue to survive well). - Metabolism decreases during hibernation (there is no food = to hibernate!). If that situation consumed the muscle tissue, they would not be able to get up when they woke up. But of course, a total fast for a long time will end up collapsing the muscle cells as well. It's all a matter of measurement and species-specific metabolism (and individual differences between different people).

I was a sugar addict. For almost 2 weeks I’ve been eating a low carb, healthy fat diet with about a 15-9 IF. My issue is I’m not overweight. Although I do have more body fat than I would like. I’m 60 , I weigh 111lbs. and I’m 5’3”. I started this lifestyle because I was tired of being a slave to sugar and I want to be healthier with less inflammation. I also have Parkinson’s. I imagine my body will get rid of my excess fat, while keeping the muscle, and will go into “maintenance mode”so I don’t lose too much weight. Dr. Becky, you said in previous videos that you were overweight. Now that you’ve lost body fat you still continue eating and fasting this way. You don’t stop this lifestyle when you reach your goal, right? I know I’m in the minority not needing to loose weight necessarily, but thin doesn’t mean healthy .

Great to hear of a study focused on women in their 60s! I've done keto for 15 months (Keith's carbs, not Becky's!) and 16/8 IF for a year. I love both, but only lost 15 lbs when I first discovered IF. Can't figure out why no loss in 9 months and can find no research related to it. My family thinks I'm crazy to stay in keto & IF, but I feel great except for the excess weight. 😁🤪

70 yo here. I've been 16/8 IFing for several months and it's feels like a very natural way for me to eat. (have always been unable to eat much before 10am anyway.) What's started to happen is that I wake up with a upset stomach lately. I take carba-levodopa for PD three times a day. I drink 12 oz of lemon water immediately when I get out of bed, but it doesn't really help. I usually wait until 10:30 to 11:30 to break the fast each day. I'm not sure what to do. I've lost 14lbs and need to lose another 30. I really want this lifestyle to work.

It would be interesting to know if the 25 women fasting were working or not working outside the home or if they got to choose the 8 hour window to work around their jobs. I wonder if they stuck to 3 meals or if they skipped breakfast which would reduce their calories in a day and help them stay in the 8 hour eating window.

Hi. I have been following the 16/8 regime for a number of years now. I have just turned 66 years old. It isn't difficult to follow and if you 'cheat' every now and again, so what? I have lost two stone in that time. I will say, it is really important to cut out as much of as you can, of processed sugar in all of its hidden forms. This is not always easy for us sugar addicts. However, if I can do it anyone can.
