Hello and welcome to another international trip report on the channel!
Today we'll be riding with the Austrian national operator ÖBB, aboard one of their flagship Railjet services. We'll be travelling from Vienna, Austria to Munich, Germany in Economy Class. These are one of the most thought out trainsets out there, being both fast, comfortable and reliable. Enjoy the ride!

One of the chief reasons for the large range of shops and supermarkets in Austrian main railway stations is because shop opening is banned on Sundays EXCEPT in railway stations and airports so, if you need to do a shop on a Sunday in Vienna then you need to go to the Hauptbahnhof or Westbahnhof to do it!

@@NonstopEurotrip In Salzburg it's opened even on sundays. It's opened daily untill 11pm. - only time they're closed is on special hollidays (church related of course)

Beautiful coverage. Vienna hbf is Awsome. OBB color looks pretty. Interiors are excellent. The entire journey took me back to my travel experience. Love munich hbf. Hope the new terminal gets functional soon.

@@LibertyDino they united all the long distance trains under one roof in VIenna, making it a perfect transfer point. And they made one of the most beautiful stations in Europe, the third in "Modern stations" category after Berlin Hbf and LIege.

@@NonstopEurotrip I don't know what it is, my friend, that makes me like this even more than a Velaro. For a loco-hauled train, it's so refined and so unusual to see a loco in the middle when two trainsets are coupled together - it has its unique charm, ngl. But sure, Velaros are hard to beat.

Excellent video. Have travelled Zurich to Wien and back in 2019. Railjets are brilliant despite the problems with the track wear. Catering is good particularly in First Class where meals are brought to your seat.

Hello Nonstop Eurotrip, as you have noticed, the transition from Austria to Germany is not noticeable. This is also due to the scenery that belonged to a country a long time ago, namely Bavaria. Has anyone already wondered why Austrians speak German (at least a kind of)? The reason for this is that all of Austria belonged to Bavaria. So there was a Bavarian-Hungarian border. No Bavarian-Italian border, because Lombardy was in a relationship with Bavaria. In return, Trieste and its port were Bavarian. In the 19th century Bavaria still bordered Venice and the Pope's state. Unfortunately, Henry the Lion, ruler of Bavaria, came into conflict with Barbarossa, Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation. The end was, Eastern Bavaria was split off and Austria (Ostmark) was created and Barbarossa installed the Habsburgs as rulers. - Cheers, Heinz

Great service - I miss travelling on Railjets. One thing I've noticed on your videos is that your shutter speed is all over the place when you film something in a darker area. I hope you don't mind me saying but if you fix your shutter speed to 1/100s instead of having autoshutter on it will ensure everything is constantly smooth at 50fps.

Love these videos, though really would like to see more dining on trains. One of the best perks of train travel is getting to the restaurant car to enjoy a few beers and some decent food. Also, would love to see these routes in the winter too! Great job, keep up the awesome work.

Vous avez raison: Vienne et Munich sont deux grandes villes de culture et avec une cuisine remarquable: Wiener Schnitzel et Kaiserschmarrn pour Vienne ou Münchner Weißwürste et Schweinshaxen par exemple pour Munich.

After the departure you could hear food being unwrapped and some hungarian words ('this one is with cheese...'). It is very typical for us hungarians, if we see a trainset, let alone we board it, we instantly start unpacking food. You would never find a hungarian train without several passengers eating.

Part of this route is now my regular route going from Salzburg to Leipzig via Minuch to visit my family after moving to Salzburg last year... And now there are border checks at the first station after the border, Freilassing... after the war in Ukraine began, they started doing these ID checks by the german federal police. Seeing Munich mainstation like this again... Now it's a big construction zone with parts of it being torn down. They're remodeling the whole station over decades now...

Overall a good video, however I think one thing needs to be pointed out: 5:10 Unfortunately you have been traveling the route while there was temporary change in the timetable due to construction work, normally this train (RJX 62) departs half an hour later from Wien Hbf, hence the trip only takes just over 4 hours. 9:49 This also caused one additional stop (in Attnang/Puchheim), normally there are only 3 between Vienna and Munich.

I'm watching this with a wee smile at the irony of algorithms... exactly a year ago tomorrow, I travelled from Krakow to Wien, then change train, on to Munich...your video did have me going, I remember that...I remember that too, oh, I saw that!..then I noticed that you posted this a year ago!...it wasn't the same train, I got into Munich hbf at 19:00...then got a train to Augsburg...you got a new sub!...trains in Europe are awesome...by the way...€62 from Krakow to Munich...

Haha wieso wird mir das Video erst jetzt empfohlen. Ich bin 1 Tag vor der Veröffentlichung des Videos exakt die selbe Linie gefahren nach München mit dem RJX 260 ohne Verspätung. Rückfahrt am Abend war mit einen EC217 , RJX 168 und von St.Pölten Hbf nach Tullnerfeld mit dem ICE T :). ( Erstes Mal mit einen ICE im Leben gefahren und war sehr begeistert, verstehe jedoch nicht warum der so runtergemacht wird)

Lovely scenery along the way. Economy is not my preferred way to travel Max … too many people in the carriage. You’ll most likely find me in Business or perhaps First Class and most likely in the quiet car. 😉. Looking forward to your review on that 👍🏻

Is there a rail jet from Munich international airport to Vienna international airport and is there a layover that we have to get out of the train and get another train?

There is no direct Railjet between the 2 airports, you would have to change at the main stations to pick up a fast and frequent s-bahn service. Railjets run from Vienna Hbf to Munich Hbf every 2 hours.

It‘s quicker via Frankfurt, and the ICE T from Vienna to Frankfurt is as good as a Railjet. But if you want to try both, ICE and Railjet, traveling via Munich may be an option.

How much in advance do you purchase tickets?. As far as I know a ticket on this route costs something like 105 Eur on OeBB ticket site if you buy in a month before the ride

Interesting video. But two points need to be made. Firstly, some type of temporary timetable must have been operating in August 2020. Normally the Wien-Munchen RJ trains leave Wien at 30 past the even hour and take just a couple of minutes over four hours. Secondly the local stopping trains between Salzburg and Munchen are not tun by DB but by an independent company called Meridian, which paints its train in a mainly blue livery.

In september 2022 I traveled with Railjet from Salzburg to Vienna in second class and in october from Venice to Villach in first class. I remember smooth rides, polite personel and a never-to-forget ham role with pickle and sharp mustard: crispy fresh bread and a quality of ham from another planet. I just love this train service.

While I do like railjets, you can see that some of the older ones could already use a refurbishment. I expect ÖBB will start refurbishing some of them, once we the first railjet 2 trainsets arrive. I doubt they can spare any these days.

The trip shows one of the bigger shortcomings of train travel to and from Austria. The main western railway line in Austria between Vienna and Salzburg allows for good speed and you can hardly beat that line with a car. But once you hit the lines that connect Austria to Germany, the trains get frustratingly slow. I did business travel between Vienna and Munich and Vienna and Nuremberg for several years. Those lines need to be upgraded to close that gap in the European high speed rail network. As nice as it is to take a Railjet or ICE, having them go 120 km/h just is frustrating.

ÖBB Railjet uses 1216 & 1116 locomotives. Railjet also reaches Frankfurt Am Main Hbf & Flughafen via Augsburg Schnellfahrstrecke Mannheim Stuttgart. Your Railjet max out at 145 mph 230 kmh on Schnellfahrstrecke Wien St Polten. Frankfurt Am Main trips max out speed 3-4 times Schnellfahrstrecke Wien St Polten Hauptstrecke München-Augsburg Schnellfahrstrecke Ulm Stuttgart when completed and Schnellfahrstrecke Mannheim Stuttgart.

It looked like a comfortable trip from one city center to the other. If you were flying, you would have consumed a couple of hours going to and from the airports, so the time would have been about the same. Economy seating in a plane is usually not as generous, and you couldn't have walked around as much. And there's not as much to see out a plane's window! I imagine that in First Class there is food and beverage service available, and FC isn't that much more. Clearly, the train is a better option for this trip!

@@NonstopEurotrip it's been a train that has operated for well over 50 years. Usually they end it in Bologna during the off peak season, but during the peak season there are 2 departures a day (the first one to Bologna and the second to Rimini)
