Thanks! I must have lost my bearings a bit and misidentified that lake 😅 Thanks for correcting me, I've pinned your comment to the top so that others realise there was a mistake 😁
Wenever dylan says hi on the restroom mirror, he puts a smile on my face... Eventhough im from southern india(tamilnadu), not sure of vising europe, dylan makes me watch his videos still always, there is something cool in his vision as we are all get to see that only through his videos..., if i have trouble finding sleep, first thing i do is watch his videos..., lovely..., ❤❤❤
I can see now that I made the mistake of a lifetime back in 1979 by taking a night train from Zurich to Vienna. I did it because I was still cash-poor and didn't have a credit card yet, and the night train saved me one night's cost of places to stay. Definitely need to fix this the next time I'm in Europe!
Travelled on Railjet 1st class from Zurich to Innsbruck. Railjet sets the standard by which all European trains should aspire .Superb train fast smooth comfortable excellent job OBB.
Going to Switzerland most years in the 90s, often more than once a year, I was always incredulous about the amount of graffiti along the line side and on buildings, yet the streets were so free of litter. It almost seemed a paradox.
Good job Dylan. I have driven thru the Alps area from Italy thru Switzerland to Germany and went that way on the train from Milano but it was at night so I did not get to enjoy it the way I enjoyed this. Thanks for taking us along with you on your trips and I look forward to your next one. Take care and God bless.
I have travelled on The Railjet a few times from BREGENZ TO INNSBRUCK AND SALZBURG! I have ÖBB Advantage card ( Vorteilskarte), so I only pay senior citizen half price! Railjet is an excellent train to travel with! Dylan, thanks a lot for taking us on a journey! Bless U!
This was by far the clearest travel video I've ever seen and the view out the side window was really nice! Liked all the informative comments and seeing the inside of the train! The only disappointment was that the trip was much too short! The Alps are breathtaking in all seasons!
Your trip reports are absolutely excellent. Good photography and well written commentary. I will certainly refer to your vlogs for trip planning post COVID.
My favourite trip with my favourite operator. Only one trip better is the Transalpin from Zurich to Graz and only because the train has an SBB observation coach attached.
Great video review there. What a leisurely way to spend a day on the move. I had the pleasure of taking the RailJet from Munich to Vienna in 2019. It was a real treat being on such a first class operation.
A great video and report! I did this trip back in the 80s, not quite as nice a train as this one, though. I remembered the scenery as vividly as you portrayed it here.
My mother and I did the same journey back in the early 2000s but stopped in Salzburg for a couple of days, doing The Sound of Music tour and visiting Mozart’s house. The two trains that we travelled on were totally different as they had the individual compartments rather then open plan which always reminds me of train travel in the olden films 😂 All three cities were different but equally as nice. Need to repeat the journey once we can travel more freely 👍👍 Thanks for bringing back wonderful memories 🥰
what an amazing journey you went through the 4 germanic countries ( germany austria switzerland licthenstein) and the scenery is so beautiful moutains lakes and forests valleys etc and the train looks so professionnal i need to do this in the future
I took that same train in September, 2017. It was my first long train trip in Europe, and I sure was impressed. I was in first class. The schnitzel from the dining car was tasty and the views spectacular. I was impressed with the number of items on the menu also.
Excellent video of a very scenic journey Dylan. I took this same service in June 2019 and was also delayed. On the way out the train was diverted via Zell am See therefore even more scenic. If travelling from U.K. to Vienna this is the best way to go with an overnight stop in Zurich. If starting from Budapest the train passes through 5 countries. Our outward train terminated in Budapest.
The Weather Gods were certainly smiling down upon your route that day! When I feel comfortable traveling again, my first trip from America will be to Switzerland to visit my Sister and her Husband who live just outside of Zurich in Zug, Switzerland. Based on the fantastic scenery as depicted here, I think I’ll fly into VIE, spend a week in Austria and then hop aboard this train in Business Class to ZRH. Thank you for taking us along for the ride! 👍🏻
Great video of one of Europe's most scenic railway trips, and really coverage of the most importants points of the trip for anyone who after viewing this video wants decides to take this trip. Dylan correctly points out that upon arriving in Switzerland at Buchs, there is a delay while the locomotives are changed. The Austrian engine is detached and a Swiss engine attached at what was the rear of the train. Thus, if a rider was on the left side of the train facing forward, that seat will then be on the right side of the train facing backward. I took this train in October 2016. Based on that experience, the view from either side of the train are roughly the same from Vienna to Innsbruck. After Innsbruck when the train climbs up into the Alps, the majority of the time the train was on the left side of the valley and thus the seats on the right side of the train (facing the locomotive) had the better views.
A loco change at Buchs only occurs with a loco-hauled IC or EC train. Railjets simply reverse direction as they are a fixed formation and the loco is fitted with the narrower pantographs required on the swiss system.
I remember this journey in 1989 when it was the TransAlpin EC62 from Vienna to Basel. The night train was the Wiener Waltzer. Oh for the days when long distance trains had names! My well-thumbed Thomas Cook European Timetable is a treasured item now!
Thanks to you, Dylan! There you have it, a long and complicated journey before returning to Great Britain. I don't know if you really took advantage of it, but you make us travel.
A beautiful scenic trip on a beatiful sunny day. You lucked out on this one Dylan. Nice looking train and super clean ! The station in Vienna looked like a nice place to visit around and I'm sure I could find some great pastries to take on the trip. Lots of trains to see on the way too.
Beautiful! I've been on Railjet between Vienna and Innsbruck but then took the service which heads to Venice (also spectacular). I also love the musical sounds that the Taurus makes when accelerating. 😍
The scenery between Innsbruck and Zurich is spectacular. Only done that trip once (on the Orient Express), but would love to do it again, next time entirely in daylight. You definitely saved the best till last.
Wonderful! I'm fascinated by trains that separate for two different destinations. Seems extra complex - I have to give the rail workers a lot of credit for coordinating it all. Thanks for the video & ride along Dylan! Safe travels!
I like your videos very much. This one however is a mega hit. For 2 reasons: the marvellous scenery, and travelling in my alltime favourite Railjet. Thanks very much for this and other videos. 🚂
What a stunning trip. The Austrian and Swiss scenery is second to none. I am hoping to take my family from the UK to Vienna next year and then onto Salzburg, Innsbruck, Zurich and returning via Paris. I cannot wait! Any advice or tips would also be welcomed.
What gorgeous scenery, Dylan! I am so jealous. I love train trips so a nearly 8-hour ride through Austria, Germany and Liechtenstein into Switzerland sounds like a dream. Thanks for sharing!
This was a nice trip to end 2020. The scenery was wonderful, especially the villages in the valleys and the tall mountains all around. It would be worth taking this trip just for the scenery, even if you had no other reason to go to Zurich. It was a shame the restaurant card scanner wasn't working on an 8-hour journey.
It's a trip I have made several times. The train is usually spot on time. If you don't have a "OEBB Vorteilskarte" or book way in advance, the trip does cost more however. The scenery is nice. Good video overall!
Great travelog as usual. However the train seems to be making weird choking sounds - I'm guessing that's the suspension, but it sure sounds super strange as if someone is being strangled!
Excellent! Great scenery. I would become very confused with the borders. I would never be sure which country I was in. Fortunately you can only be in one at a time. Except with some crazy borders of course. Looking forward to next Friday's excerp. Travel safely!
There is a reason why OBB is typically the most commonly top rated rail system & operator in the world. The constant theme I find with anyone who has ridden with them is staff friendliness, comfort, great OTP (of course there is always going to be some late or early trains, that's just the nature of transit), and of course, if not the most loved part, the scenery! The only way to create the perfect, unbeatable rail experience would be if you combine that reputation & service of OBB, and combine it with the speed of Japan's Shinkansen bullet trains.
@@Kullioking oh I know. The only way otherwise would be to utilize mass amounts of tunneling. That said I was more referring to the world in general, not Osterreich itself with the "only way to make it even better" part of my comment.
Brought back fond memories as this route goes through some of my favorite areas of Europe. Traveling vicariously these days as I don't think there will be any more trips across the pond for me. Your commentaries, as always, are informative but not intrusive. Keep up the good work.
Dylan, I have to say you did leave the best of your Europe 2020 rail journeys to the last and wow! I'm very impressed with the appearance and layout of the carriages on this trip. I wish we had something like this downunder. This journey from Vienna via Salzburg to Zurich has always been on my bucket list and, if we get to travel again before my age and health prevents it (and if I can afford it of course), I would love to do this one, as well as travel on a SwissRail Pass throughout Switzerland. You were blessed to have a beautiful late summer day, a sensible schedule (09 20 until 17 20 plus 30 mins late running) and spectacular scenery. OBB Railjet has gone into my travel memory bank! One bit of levity based on your loo with a view reminded me of a comical incident that I'll leave with you for a chuckle. Way back last century, i was taking care of business in my motel room in Gladstone, Queensland, when I saw across the room through the window an approaching coal train heading to the port. The backdrop to the view was so impressive, that I quickly exited the ensuite 'in the buff', grabbed my camera and captured the view (on real film in the pre-digital age). It's the only railway photo I have ever taken without a stitch of clothing on. I wouldn't do that these days. Stay safe and I look forward to next week's contribution.
Railjet is easily the best service in Europe. I need to do more trips on them (was hoping to do Velden to Venice this year but will wait until 2022 I guess!)
They didn't offer it , but many years ago in the Premium class - now buiness - you get free drinks and food. First class is also amazing in the RJ. Great trip report - greetings from Austria
Dear Dylan, another beautiful and interesting video. I appreciate your detailed description. Of all the train travel videos on the internet, yours are the best. I appreciate your politeness for waving at the camera, I keep waving you back. Keep doing this, it gives a kind of connection. Keep it safe Dylan and take care.
Great video.!!! I travelled railjet very often cause I work for ÖBB. But Linz has 206.500 inhabitans and not just under 20500. It is the third largest city but the second largest conurbation with over 800.000 people :-)
Travelling up the Arlberg pass (even on a Railjet) is hardly high-speed! There are frequently points where the Railjet struggles to make 40kmh (emphasised by the displays in Railjet coaches showing the current speed). Means more time to enjoy the view.
Excellent video as usual, Dylan. I noticed that at 5:06, you gave us "a look around the seat," as opposed to the usual seat tour 🙂. As for the broken card machine, I generally carry more cash with me in Europe as I've experienced that, or machines which don't recognise British cards a few times. It can avoid a lot of embarrassment, especially if you've just filled your car with petrol (as happened to me in Germany in 2005.) Also, a lot of debit cards charge about £1.50 On foreign transactions, which can add up on small amounts. I keep any euros I've got left over for my next trip.
Lived in the town of Wädenswil back in 2019 for an exchange semester. Often saw the railjets passby along lake Zurich (even the Orient Express one night!). I remember seeing Walensee around February when there were still snow at the top of the mountains in the way to Sargans for a day trip to Liechtenstein. Great video!
Wow, I really ended up having a few near encounters with the rail travel RU-vid community last September, on the 6th I arrived at Berlin Hbf about 20mins after AndyB Travels had left and then I caught the Nightjet to Venice from Vienna later in the evening on the same day you filmed this! Definitely seems like everyone was making the most of the few weeks of relaxed travel restrictions 😂😂
Lovely video 👌🏼 if I remember correctly the restaurant car was operated by a another brand before, I think I was called Henry's, oh it was lovely. And the crew doesn't change in Buchs. Sometimes the Swiss Conductor goes as far as Innsbruck and the Austrian sometimes to Zurich
In terms of scenery, you could have done even better by taking the EC train "Transalpin" from Graz to Zürich. While your train avoided the heart of Austrian Alps by taking a northern route through Linz, Salzburg and Rosenheim, the mentioned EC train goes straight through it, taking the wild alpine route via Selzthal, Bischofshofen, Zell am See, Saalfelden, Kitzbühel to Wörgl - yes, some of the most prestigious ski centres in Austria just listed :) As an icing on a cake, that trains also has the 1st class Panorama car of SBB. Worth taking a ride in any way. Especially in the winter!
Great video! Thank you. I loved that the train seemed so sparklingly clean, especially the windows which made the views even more spectacular! I travelled by train in Switzerland in the 1970s (!) from Geneva to Lausanne, then up to Interlaken, and on to Zurich. It was magical - right up at the very top of my best travel experiences ever! We also took a side trip on a small train from Interlaken to Wengen. Gorgeous. Switzerland by train should be on everyone’s bucket list.
It was, a little less nowadays if you take the faster route by the gothard base tunnel. You can still do the older route, but most of the trains now go by the base tunnel.
Awesome Report! When we do get to start traveling again - will always remember to bring cash when boarding a train in case the card terminal is broken.
Fantastic views, beautiful train, and clean and sparkling. If I were to take this train...which I just might some day soon, I'd go First Class. I'd also indulge myself in the restaurant car a bit. Prost!
Great trip report as always. We had railways in our recent video where we did a narrowboat versus train race using the Marlow and Henley branchlines. Not sure they would've scored that highly 😂
A really stunning trip through the Alps. I hope you'll plan further journeys through Germany especially through Southern East of Bavaria up to Salzburg. The region is called Berchtesgadener Land and is part of the National Reservation. You will like it, just come and visit it. The pandemic situation will come to an end and everything will be ready for tourists. Greetings from Germany. 🙂
I'm from near Feldkirch. So the part from there to vienna is a regular trip for me. 1-2 times a year for 20 years now. The last few times i used a nightjet. But its time to see this view again at daylight. And you didn't even bother to show the best bits ;)
If you want spectacular scenery then you should consider reviewing the Rocky Mountaineer which runs between Calgary and Vancouver in Canada, if you haven’t done so yet. I traveled on it back in 1997 and it was an absolutely fantastic experience.
Most enjoyable. FYI I did the same trip Zurich-Vienna with an overnight stop in Innsbruck over 40 years ago. At that time there were no border checks when running non-stop between Zurich and Innsbruck via Germany.
