This is one of the saddest days of my life.. I had to put my boy Goldie down today due to IVDD. His symptoms came on suddenly and progressed rapidly. I wish I had more time with him, but I am so grateful and blessed for the 4yrs I had with him. He was a terrier mix rescue and I can honestly say that he RESCUED me. I love you and miss you so much my precious Goldie. You will forever be in my heart. RIP my sweet boy..😔😭💔🌈🐕

I’m not a vet but I hope this helps ..My dog jumped off my bed and was a grade 5. i took him to the vet and they tested his reflex and he wasn’t able to move at all. he wasn’t able to put his back feet fully on the floor. They said I had to get an emergency surgery ASAP or in the next weeks or he will be paralyzed. I asked the vet if I can give him pain medicine and anti inflammatory medicine until his surgery date. I also gave him CBD dog OIL.. I tried everything from having him do water therapy in my tub to deep massages. I honestly left him in the (crate trained with extra cushion)crate 24/7 for 2 weeks straight and picked him up to go to the bathroom and right back into the crate. I took time and really researched what or how he can get healed they scheduled a 10k surgery which It was out of my budget and it wasn’t guaranteed if he’ll make it .. on the day before his scheduled surgery he was able to walk. And he’s been running and jumping around ever since. I met some guy who experienced the same and he put his dog down cus the cost of surgery. He was upset because he tryed everything and he meant he Try every every thing. He did not try the crate training. I also lit a candle 🕯️ and still do to this day because my prayer was heard but I hope this helps you and your pup

Thank you so much for sharing this ♡ if you don't mind may you tell me more about the candle lighting. My dog is currently experiencing this after having just gotten surgery for another issue and I now don't have it in me to put her thru another surgery nor am I financially willing to undergo such another huge expense (previous surgery was for a mass removal and in total I paid around $7000 for everything ) I will heal her with strict crate rest. I have been giving her cbd as well. I would love to know more of what you did. Thank you so much!

@@andgonito yes, hang in there currently sending positive energy your way. If you don’t mind me asking what type of surgery did he get? What happened? I hope he gets better.!! Remember the toughest battles are always for the toughest soldiers. your dog only wants to see you happy and make sure you’re OK at the end of the day he/she doesn’t want to put any sadNess on you. Your little buddy needs your help and full attention. They need your love, emotion, spiritual and mental support to keep their balance, Remember what they say faith can move mountains and grounds that no one can see. I also made sure they had additional vitamins like the advanced joint support and omega-3 oil and I also got some cannabis/hemp treats so they can relax. I would make sure he relaxed all day in the crate, and I had a very cushion memory foam bed in his crate. I also would give him entertainment toys like the Kong, and put food and treats inside to keep them occupied. You could only take a day by day, but every day I would try to get him to walk a bit. Once I would see he would be exhausted or tired I would put him back inside the crate. And my dog acts like my security here so I had to make sure he wasn’t having too much fun because he would jump around and be a big ball of energy , Remember the muscle can only remember what previously was learned so I tried to re-teach him how to walk but first he had to relearn how to stand, and just starting small by having them stand on all four legs just so they get the feel of how they were. I would also do Hydro exercises by filling up the tub with warm water and letting him walk around to get blood moving. I also always made sure to have two leashes on him if I ever took him out or anywhere, at all times even when he did hydro practice one on his neck and one on his butt above his legs to keep him still, and they naturally start making like a slow running motion. Nothing was on too tight. Patient is your best friend right now. sometimes my dog wouldn’t eat so I would give them chicken and rice that seem to bring the mood up. I would try to get also different opinions from different veterinarians because sometimes they might have a few tricks up their sleeve. I don’t know if your city has the VIP shots events for the dogs. Sometimes those vets are able to do procedures at a reasonable price. One of my pup had Pavo and I was quoted in the emergency room $1500 for the treatment and a veterinarian that I met from the VIP shot event gave me her number and the treatment for free. She literally gave me everything I needed and more for 6 pups. She gave me six treatments for all my six puppies because they all had Pavo for free. You can maybe do a go fund me page and put pictures with the QR code around town so people can take a picture and donate there’s many different methods. But going back to the candle lighting I usually light it after my shower but when I showered. I had a bucket filled with water and parsley leaves. I ripped them up with intentions and made a small prayer to help my dog get back to normal. Once the parsley leaves were ripped up I would grab them in my right hand and scrub all around my body, like as if it was a sponge and absorbing all my intention and prayers in my thoughts as soon as I got out the shower, I would light a candle and say a prayer again to god anyone on the other side (prayer to god/ guardian angels, San Judas tadeo helps with tough situations ). I used a white candle, but any candles should be fine. But I would leave it in their hands . As soon as the candle is about to turn off, I would get the flame, (same flame ) for the next candle. I remember one time I had even three candles lit at the same time, but my faith never change until this day I still have 2 candles 🕯️ make sure he’s not jumping on in off the couch I’m not a financial advisor, nor a veterinarian, nor a spiritual advisor, but hang in there. ❤️❤️❤️

@PICANTESOCIETY I want you to know I absolutely love and appreciate you from the bottom of my heart for taking the time to write this message for me 🥹 I have taken screenshots of the whole thing and will implement everything. I've just bought a memory foam for my dog to sleep on and will help her relearn how to stand. You are a blessing and I am sending soooo much positive loving energy to you and your pup! She had a surgery to remove a mass on her abdomen. I'm not sure how or why the ivdd started but when I brought her back from her surgery she was walking weird and every day after she slowly stopped using her back legs. I kept calling the vet to find out why and they said it was most likely her response to pain from the surgery or the pain medicine but that she would be fine. However when I took her back to get her stiches removed they said it was most likely ivdd..... I'm having faith that she will have a full recovery and walk like her normal happy self again soon. I will light a candle for my baby and set intentions and pray for her full and complete miraculous recovery ❤️

Excellent video. My dashound/beagle mix got IVDD 5 months ago stage 4. We woke up middle of the night to him having fallen/jumped from the bed and was paralyzed in hind legs and in severe pain. Very scary and heart breaking. He was in a lot of pain. We took him to urgent care to manage his pain and got him surgery the next day. In 2 weeks he gained ability to wag tail and then slowly gained strength in his hind legs. He was able to control urination and defecation after a few weeks. We had to adjust his pain meds since his prescribed meds were not working well. In 3 months he gained ability to kick his legs back. He is doing much better now and around 85% back to his pre IVDD with great quality of life. It takes time but don’t lose hope.

We've got this same issue going on. The Vet here in South Florida estimated 2k for imaging, 4k for surgery and 1500 in meds/followup work. So that's 7,500 dollars to get my 8 year old dog back to normal. I have a 4 year old child and a newborn and just cannot bring myself to spend that much money as we are a middle income family. I wish someone could do this process for my 3,500 budget. Makes me very sad. Currently she is under strict crate rest, she is wearing the 'lil backer' back brace, and taking a supplement rich in Chondroitin called Vetri Disc. I am trying to look for other vets that could complete the surgery closer to my budget. Vets are expensive here because of all the old retired millionaires. I am not going to give up on her easily
@SEVNeurology
@SEVNeurology 3 года назад
We (Southeast Veterinary Neurology) are in south Florida, but unfortunately are not less expensive than what you’ve been quoted elsewhere. It’s not just the “old retired millionaires” that make this sort of care cost what it does. It’s the equipment and the expertise and the round the clock care and the facilities that make it cost what it does. Honestly, I am not aware of any board-certified neurologist in the entire state of Florida that could do a quality job (exam, preanesthetic labs, MRI, surgery, rehabilitation, hospitalization, pain management, follow up care, etc) for less than $7500. If you find someone less in Florida they are either not a board-certified neurologist and/or aren’t doing an MRI (and are performing older, dated tests such as a myelogram). Please reach out to one of our offices. I hope we can better explain the costs AND the value of what we can do for your dog. www.SEVNeurology.com

@SEVNeurology
@SEVNeurology 3 года назад
@@poolahpot Finances are the number one thing that keep pets from getting the care they need. Most vets offer payment plans. We offer three different deferred payment plans through third party providers: Care Credit, Wells Fargo Health and ScratchPay. All of them are interest-free for a certain period (12 months). They do require a credit check. Almost every time I have offered a client to have a payment plan where they pay me directly, they never pay. It’s terrible because they ruin it for the good people who would pay. But I’ve easily written off tens of thousands of dollars of services to people who promise to pay but never do. So we stick to CareCredit, Wells Fargo and ScratchPay. We do a fair amount of discounting to help people. We do a lot of rescue work. And we occasionally do some pro bono work. This is important for us to do, but isn’t sustainable. We have recently started a foundation that people can donate to in order to help families that can’t afford services. Currently it doesn’t have enough funds in it to even cover the cost of one surgery. But we are doing our best to help as many families as possible. Very informative video. Our 13+ yo Beagle/Dachshund mix was going full-bore after a squirrel two days ago and lost his back legs mid-run. After a visit to the emergency vet, she pretty much suspected it was this. They offered the MRI and a possible surgery option. We actually do have insurance, but, unfortunately, our pup also has CHF and, while he's been soldiering through that (with meds) for over a year pretty well, we just don't want to risk the anesthesia. Plus, we don't want him to go through all that, only to have the CHF possibly take him a few months later. So, for now, we're doing crate rest and have pain killers/anti-inflammatory meds. He's still got an appetite and goes potty outside with us supporting his back legs. One thing I would say - do whatever you can to keep your at-risk breeds from jumping down from stuff. I know it's difficult and they can move before you know it, but I'll always wonder if, had I'd been more careful, he'd still be going after the squirrels.

I lost my beautiful Husky Boy Smokey last month and am still searching for answers to what happened. This was not diagnosed, but I've wondered if he might have had a slipped disk or perhaps a ruptured disk, as he had trouble walking and was in much pain when he did try to walk. It all came on so suddenly too. After reading several of the responses here some of it sounds so familiar, as I was hand feeding him, rotisserie chicken one day then ground beef and rice the next, and steak yet another day. I had to act like I was going to eat it first for him to take and eat it. He was then having problems pooping and then started having problems peeing, so we thought it might be UTI, which all results came back negative. Seeing this makes me think I could have done more for him, but I didn't want him to suffer. I have been the one suffering each day since, and miss him so very much. He was my very best friend.

My dog had IVDD due to a spinal cord injury in his neck. He had Paresis on his right front and rear leg which meant he could not walk on his own. His front paw was knuckling severely and his rear leg was to the point where his leg was crossing over the other leg. This made it even harder to maneuver him. He was on pain meds including opiates and anti inflammatories which caused him to not be able to urinate by the way (that’s a while other subject). I just could not put him down though. So I decided to look for alternative healing methods. I found a lady online that had cured her little poodle of complete paralysis due to IVDD in her rear legs by sheer accident. She gave the dog a supplement called iHercules. I had never heard of this. It’s not made for dogs but this lady decided it was worth a try to give it to the dog to see if it would help. She gave the dog three doses per day and after two weeks the dog began moving her hind legs on her own. This lady’s dog also had to wear diapers and couldn’t go to the bathroom by herself due to her paralyzed hind legs. I decided it was worth a try for my dog. So I ordered it and within two weeks my dog began improving as well. Within 15-20 days he was walking again at 80% and after a month he is now 95% better. He runs around the yard now, even hiking his leg to pee. He couldn’t move before. I had to hold him up with harnesses to take him outside. I still do not let him jump off steps or the couch and I watch him like a hawk so he doesn’t re-injure himself but I am so amazed he has recovered so well. It is an absolute miracle. I also gave him licorice extract and a hemp chew with MSM, glucosamine and chondroitin and changed his diet to better food. Who knows if it’ll work for your baby or not but it was worth a try for me and I have my boy back now. So grateful.

This was incredibly insightful! My dog has quickly lost use of his right hind leg and and now has significant muscle deterioration. We've had MRI's and X-Rays performed. Been to countless vets and orthopedic surgeons (no surgery yet). The specialists we've seen have said it's possibly IVDD, others disagree and believe there is a tumor along the sciatic nerve. I've been calling every specialist trying to get any help possible in the hopes of narrowing the cause. Reaching out to different universities now. He's only 4.

Lost 90% of all movement in his leg and now he avoids walks and most activities he previously enjoyed. Taking him in this Friday for more scans as docs now think it could be cancer and if so were going to do radiation treatment. Little guy isn't the same unfortunately. My yorkie mix stopped using his back legs 6 months or so ago. We took him to two vets. The first only had him in the back for barely 10 mins came back with two different dog vitamins and charged me 100. Said he would be fine. Knowing the vet didn't even look at him or give us any reason to why this was happening we had a second opinion. Second vet kept him over night. Told us he didn't need surgery that it was a pinched nerve and within another 2 weeks or so he would walk again. After getting medicine our total fee was almost 3k! It's been 5 months since the visit and he's never walked again. We aren't stacked in cash and just can't keep seeing vets who are mis diagnosing him. He's now lost most muscles in his lower half and has gotten fast at scooting. We continue to stretch his legs for him and massage him. He doesn't appear to be in any pain. He uses the restroom on his own. His legs tremor some times and tail still wags. Anyone have opinions on what it could be and what I should do and if he can ever walk again? We have been looking into wheel chairs for him and therapy.

I had a 10 year Labrador mix. A few months ago, on a Sunday, he was running around like a big, silly puppy. Three days later he was unable to walk. I took him to a veterinary neurologist and she confirm he was neurologic in all four limbs (which I paid $500 for something I already knew). To find the cause would have required about $5k to $6K worth of tests. But even if I went ahead with the tests and surgery could have corrected his issues, neurosurgery would have cost another $6K (at least). Being retired and on a fixed income, I could not afford to spend $11,000 to fix my dog. So I had to put him down. I have always wondered what the reason was for his neurological issues. What was shown in the video exactly described his symptoms. Now I am pretty sure what happened to him.

My dog is stage 1 and this is the 8th day. Went to ER 4 times in first 6 days because the pain meds were not doing enough. He's now well into 48 hours of fairly pain free - just one episode of neck spasm and visible pain and compensation for it but no vocalization. He's basically 100% good in between the eps but besides an increase in the pain meds, I think the MAIN / KEY help has been STRICT CRATE REST. I was strict before but not crating. It's given me hope of full recovery. // It began in the middle of the night... he was about to jump down from my low bed, a common thing of the last two years, but invariably wakes me up because he's taken to peeing on the bed after another visiting dog did it. So I reached behind him to pull him back from jumping - and I must of surprised him/ shocked him and I think he just turned his neck at same time towards me and screamed bloody murder at pain. I felt soooo bad because I TOLD myself not to stop him EVER AGAIN after I did this a few months ago with the same reaction. While I blame myself, I know I didn't create the problem - but it's possible it would never have reached stage 1 of IVDD without me doing that. I also have the crate elevated so that he's not straining his neck to see me - and I think that also helps.

@Southeast Veterinary Neurology we have a large pit/mastiff mix. He finished melarsomine injections for heartworms in April and had been on limited activity for a while, so he had gained up to 126 lbs. A few months ago, we noticed that he couldn't jump into the car sometimes, but thought it was the weight. Then a few weeks ago, was playing tug of war with my husband, running side ways, and fell. Husband said his back legs were shaking, and didn't get up right away. When he got up, he seemed okay, but we began to notice more back leg weekness - not able, or hesitiant to jump up in car or on bed. Took to the vet, and they said he needed to lose weight and had inflamation and gave anti inflamitory and gabapentin. Lost 6 lbs and did xrays and still says it is his weight. So this last week, we noticed he is not putting weight on the back left leg most of the time, and if he does, the leg crosses or leans into the other leg. We are very concerned and worried. Seems to be getting worse, even though he is losing weight. Going back to vet Monday. Does this sound like IVDD, or something else. Is it possible the melarsomine injections could have caused damage? Thanks for any advise.

My dog was just diagnosed with IVDD today and he constantly screams and cries whenever he tries to sit down, or move his leg. I think he has stage 1 or stage 2 of IVDD and my family is giving him medical treatment and pain killers to try and help him recover. He's 13 years old, and I fear the worst that can happen to him with this disease especially with him being at that age 😭😭

My dog was diagnosed about 3 and a half weeks ago in the early stage I decided to give her CBD I noticed a difference in four days she is now pain free and very active for her age I have also been giving her omaga 3 fish supplement plus carprovet that the vet gave me. Wishing you and your dog the best

Hi there. We are truly sorry to hear that you and your pet are going through this challenging situation. Without prompt treatment, IVDD can advance rapidly, leading to irreversible damage. Therefore, we strongly recommend taking your pet to the nearest veterinary neurologist for timely intervention. We are here for your pet if you need us - sevneurology.com/

This information is excellent for dogs in every civilised country other than Cyprus. I use 4 different vet practices and they are all useless ! My miniature Shi-tzu was diagnosed with this 11 months ago and because the MRI showed a brain tumour, they refused to operate stating the prognosis is poor and the animal has a maximum of 6 months to live and so the attitude was Cortisone for quality of life. 11 months later the dog has been suffering with the symptoms of this disease that it has to live with everyday and so far no symptoms of a brain tumour. Does anyone know if the correct medication for this is, Omeprazole for spine fluid reduction and Gabapentin for pain control. I have tried to tell the so called vets but they all dont care. When i contact a potential new vet, they have the same attitude about the tumour. I would NEVER have another pet again as long as i am in this country of incompetence.

We lost our two years old Frenchie and we are broken. One day suddenly he couldn’t go and the vet said that it’s better to do euthanasia because the operation would be painful to him. It is the worst period of our lives. We can’t understand how from one day to other we lost him. It will always hurt us.

So sorry for your loss. I have this with my Frenchie right now, within a few months he’s got so bad. He can barely walk. And can’t control his bowels. But is too stubborn to wear diaper, he manages to take it off every time. My vet says that he’s probably not experiencing any pain, and doesn’t need to be euntenaised But he sleeps all day & night so he seems not okay& in pain. No idea what we are going to do … Very sad situation 😞

This looks like our dog. Sadly she wasn't able to get insured. She's 4 and we were told mri is 2 grand and surgery for anything could cost up 5 grand total so 7 to 8 thousand they said total. She isn't displaying pain signs any more though she seems quite happy but is struggling now to walk. Sadly we don't have any local places that will help with treatments.

I agree 100%!! I lost my poor baby, and when I say baby that’s an understatement.. she was my whole heart and then some! She loved playing ball.. she had a freak accident chasing a ball Easter Sunday and broke her back, he back legs were gone, when we got to the emergency vet she called a neurologist and she came back and told us she had a 5-20% chance of making walking again.. I didnt have much information so I just took her word for it, we made the gut wrenching decision to lay her to rest as we couldn’t bare the thought of her not being able to walk again.. also the closest neurologist was 61/2hrs away from us, so time was of the essence… I balled my eyes out & still balling my eyes out especially after watching this encouraging video of these dogs with stage 5 and making it through… now I’m grieving all over again 😭
