May is Mouth Breathing Awareness Month!
That means over the next month, I'll posting on social media every day, trying to spread the word, and I've asked my amazing MyoMentor Graduates to help me out.
MyoMentor students and graduates are some of the most passionate dental and healthcare professionals I know, and many of them have struggled with their own myofunctional symptoms - mouth breathing, tongue-tie, sleep disordered breathing, and more.
So I'll be interviewing THEM to share their stories and highlight what they are doing in their practices and communities to help their patients.
I had the pleasure of speaking with a hygienist named Hannah Gerk yesterday, and her story was another example of just how common mouth breathing and myofunctional symptoms really are.
I love Hannah's story because she touches on everything from orthodontics and premolar extraction, having a small mouth without enough tongue space, to having a tongue-tie that didn't look so obvious and realizing that she was actually a mouth breather at times.
Once Hannah started her own myofunctional therapy training, she noticed that it was difficult to keep her tongue fully up on her palate.
Hannah's story is another great example of how subtle many of these symptoms can be.
It was fun chatting with her about all of this stuff and learning about what they are doing in the dental office where she works to help patients.
Her myofunctional therapy practice is called Smile Myo Therapy and she's located in St Ansgar, Iowa.
