Twix needs a new ad campaign with the slogan 'Oh merciful gods! Ambrosia!'

I would literally give my life to watch a 10 season show of a roman soldier eating modern food while telling the stories about his life...

Hopefully our dearest Legionare does not require a new treat for each singular question, lest his belly become that of a diplomat rather than a soldier! Ah ah!

I LOVE the part at 2:10, where Rufus is speaking with his mouth full while chewing, especially on "immortal gods!". The comedic execution (really well executed btw,) of this video shouldn't fool us-this is invaluable for historical language lovers, because Rufus is talking casually, mumbling, chewing, and he just wants to relieve himself in the woods. THIS is the reality of what most of Latin was: normal people talking like us, speaking while eating, mumbling and tripping over their words, etc. It's so extremely rare to hear Latin this way, not as the rigid, fossilised religious language, but just the language everyday people spoke in a casual manner. It's also why I loved your vlog where you were describing the river; there were moments of tripping over your words, pausing, chuckling, etc. I know I'm making something big out of Latin being spoken during chewing of food, but I think it IS big-how many times do we get to hear this dead language spoken so naturalistically? Or those little lip smacking sounds at the very end. Again, they might seem like details, but these little extra sounds and imperfections were how the ancient languages were spoken, it's something Simon Roper also mentionned in one of his videos. Latin enunciated cleanly for academic reasons is like the Roman statues with white marble-they're closer to our modern idea of Rome as a distant mythological past, but Latin as you spoke it here, so naturalistically, is like the statues with their original colours. Gods bless this German journalist hero for capturing such precious footage, and of course you, Luke, for your work. PS: As someone who did some acting coaching before, your really outdid your acting here, it's getting even more natural and "visceral," like this was actually an improvised documentary. Maybe a documentary by Werner Herzog, it would explain the German accent

I had almost given up hope on seeing Decimus Helvidius Rufus again. I understand time traveling is complicated, but I hope I won't have to wait another eight months for the next episode.

The latin, greek, english, and italian speaking, flying geologist has now begun to master the german language.

I love the slight pause before "Ō dī immortālēs!". I really hope that at some point Decimus Helvidius Rufus finds his way to the streets of present day Rome, frantically asking people where he can find some more "tuuix"

The sheer commitment to actually build a time-machine to go see a Roman legionnaire just so we could enjoy a youtube video is astounding!

I'm from Germany, and that is EXACTLY what germans sound like when they speak latin!

Love the way Rufus impulsively grabs for things with his suspicious "Quid hoc?" whether it's a pair of glasses or a Twix bar

That german accent is actually really authentic! As a german I have also been studying Latin for the past 8 years so I can tell.

I pity the poor Roman legionaries who were never able to try chocolate, seeing as sugarcane is native to Southeast Asia and the cocoa bean is native to Mesoamerica.

That legionary is about to 1) gain weight and 2) have a serious toothache in a few episodes haha. In all seriousness though, this is SO good. The acting is great! Can't wait for more (and it was worth the 8 months' patience!)

I totally believe that this is an accurate portrayal of a Roman soldier's reaction to modern sweet caramel, cookie, and milk chocolate! _Ambrosia!_ indeed.. 👍

I'm strangely invested in Rufus and his "barbarian" friend.

Your acting is better than most of Hollywood. It has a great natural intensity to it that kind of reminds me of old samurai movies.

I'm thoroughly enjoying the evolving bromance between Theophilus and Rufus, I'm really sold on this. Particularly when Rufus gets to discover at least a 21st Century item in every episode.

The day we invent the time travel, RU-vid will be full of videos like this: "Time traveller gives modern sweets to medieval/roman/egyptian peasants. Watch their reaction!!"

Who would have known a Roman Legionary could be easily tamed with sweets

Imagine time traveling just to feed some ancient dude sweets. Give him an energy drink next time and watch him tell you his entire life story in the blink of an eye! ...In all seriousness though, I ADORE the little series you're making and the acting is phenomenal. And your conversations in Latin help me so much with studying this language.

I was honestly expecting Rufus to stab him, this was a suprising plot twist.

I wonder if it is still Luke voicing the German doctor. It sounds so different from his normal voice. The vidoe is amazing!!

Latin as it is not learned in school, used to speak in a casual way, with a natural intonation, not just to recite slowly (which is also great!). And it was so much fun to watch! 😄

Little did Dr. Vormelker know, that his action will change the history. Rufus was so impressed with this new type of food, that he started his own commercial enterprise producing Twix knockoffs that became very popular throughout the Empire. Unfortunately, diabetes mellitus became prevalent throughout the Empire, too. Romans became fat and lazy, which led to the destruction of the Western Roman Empire a whole century earlier than it would have otherwise. The Eastern part survived a little longer, but eventually also succumbed to invading armies, a mere 70 years later. This was a perfect example of the butterfly effect in action.

Theophilus's accent is amazing, I like the little German lines as well. Please make the next one a little faster!

I was half expecting him to spit it out on account of it being so sweet.

And thus, world events were changed, as Rome decided to mount expeditions to the New World to get hold of cocoa, which became more expensive than silk

More of these, please! It's really well acted, really plausible (in terms of the Roman legionary's behaviour) and the German character is incredibly funny!

The biggest inaccuracy is that a Roman legionary would have taken the Twix and tried to sell it.

I really like that it's at normal speaking speed, usually when people do proper pronunciation it's slowed down a bit and doesn't sound like an actual language normal people would speak outside of a grand ceremony or something, this however sounds like an actual language i can picture people actually speaking in their day to day
