In the deep ocean, life is divided between very different worlds. In the midwater, pelagic wanderers tread migratory routes that span entire oceans, and planktonic drifters and their predators take part in bioluminescent light shows. It is separated into zones based on depth, including the sunlight zone (epipelagic), twilight zone (mesopelagic), midnight zone (bathypelagic), abyssal and hadal zones. And below, lies the deep sea floor. A kingdom of mud and ooze, where sessile creatures cling to any solid outcrop and corals craft kingdoms on the seamount crusts. The worlds of the deep sea could not be more different, and yet their stories are fundamentally intertwined. In this episode, we delve into the Midnight Zone, a pitch-black zone of the deep sea where life has found peculiar ways to survive the immense pressure, from anglerfish to vampire squid to giant sharks.

Click here to get your hands on some exclusive DEEP SEA and MIDNIGHT ZONE MERCH designed by the fantastic Jakub Misiek!! naturalworldfacts.myshopify.com/ 🐙🦈🐟🐠 So this one took a while... 11 months from start to finish, while balancing it with my final year of University and some other work on the side. I'm super excited to share this AND to announce that now I've graduated, this RU-vid channel and my wildlife film-making are my full-time job moving forward!! So hopefully, lots more films, much faster. Please let me know what you thought of this one. I had so much fun working on it. 😁

This made me smile!! 😁 Thank you so much!! I love tapping into the often untold behaviours and species in the deep - there’s so much down there, all of it strange and beautiful. If you haven’t subscribed to Schmidt Ocean on RU-vid, you definitely should!! All these scenes were captured by them during their ROV dives (which they livestream), and they very kindly provided all the raw footage for me to create this film.

Given how sensitive animals in the deep are to vibrations, I wonder how many animals we will never find just because the submersibles scare them off from miles away.
@Hanna55472
@Hanna55472 День назад
Damn that’s such a good point
@NaturalWorldFacts
@NaturalWorldFacts День назад
It’s a great point! And the answer is probably quite a lot of them! Same for the lights - the ones we do see tend to be animals that are actually drawn in and attracted by the bright lights, they find them mesmerising (and undoubtedly blinding, at least short-term). But not all deep sea animals will be lured in, there are likely many that are ultra skittish, speedy, and wary of any lights or vibrations, and we would simply have no way of knowing! One approach to finding them could be suspended baited camera traps with dim red lights (often hard for animals to perceive). It would be a fascinating study! They’ve done something similar with pulsating lights mirroring the bioluminescence of Atolla jellyfish to lure in giant squid, and it was quite successful!!
@tiffanyramey845
@tiffanyramey845 День назад
@@AlexxForest wow I never thought of that but point well made...unfortunately I don't think well ever know. It's crazy to think how little we know about our ocean. So many creatures are waiting to be discovered! It's exciting and a little scary.

@@NaturalWorldFactsLeo, I could write SO MUCH about what I loved about this film.. so this may be a long reply.. 😁 I thought it was wonderful how you started with, _"Below the shimmering surface,"_ showing clips of whales and fish.. and then immediately took us down further into the darkness, explaining everything with great clarity, including a brief return to the twilight zone.. This approach definitely holds people's attention! Which parts did I enjoy the most? To be honest, *everything!* We all have our favourite creatures.. I am particularly fascinated by anglers, siphonophores (43:00 fantastic footage and explanation of these bizarre organisms), comb jellies and other bioluminescent creatures.. from 8:00, for example, the footage of these jellies using their tentacles was exceptional.. but I could point out countless similar moments! I also noticed additional special little sound effects which fit perfectly with each different clip and added to the viewing enjoyment.. and the music was perfect! 16:55, for example, the way you related so clearly about "ultra blackness" and melanin.. and then taking the viewer back for a moment to the stark contrast of the twilight zone.. Even though life in the abyss is a complicated affair, your explanation was so clear and easy to follow.. It was also a great idea to appear in person at the end.. at 49:30 we are dragged out of the abyss and can take a big breath of air and hear bird song back on land.. 😀 It was a great way to bring us "back to earth.." 👍 This was an hour of sheer fascination for me, with everything explained simply and clearly.. you have no need to worry about your future, Leo.. because it's clear you were BORN to do this! I found this channel not long after you had reached 7K subs and I remember watching some of your very first videos.. an enthusiastic 10-year-old with the confidence and passion to make wildlife videos! I knew then that you were destined for great things.. ✊ You are still a young fiIm maker, a university graduate.. yet I don't believe I have *EVER* watched a more professional, explanatory and satisfying documentary about the sea! I could write a LOT more 😆 but suffice to say.. this was absolutely BRILLIANT work and I am full of admiration.. Well done! 👏👍🙋🏻‍♀️🥳

How each one determines what it's job is and morphes it's body for that job. The deepest darkest and strangest part of the ocean is what peaks my interest, I truly enjoy learning anything about it. I'd like to learn more about whale falls and brine pools. I've attempted to find more videos on these two subjects but really you are the only channel that has anything on either one. I'm so excited for your next video of the deep sea floor. Until then I'll just admire all the videos you have so far 🥰

Bit late here, watched the early access version. I don't know much here, never been a biology person before. But I'd like to express my thanks to you and ur team. Whenever I feel down or sad or need to calm down, I come to your videos. Been countless times since I've replayed the twilight zone video and now this. I'm just deeply grateful to everyone who made this channel possible for introducing such a wonderful and magnificent world to me. Your videos leave me in awe everytime. I'm in love with the world beneath that emerald surface. I'm glad that I could live, and make this far, to be able to watch your videos. Thank you and I hope u keep doing what you love, what makes you wanna live. Thank you.

it's been quite painful lately, since years. Everyday is a struggle, which I can't decide if it's worth going through or not. Having almost no one to understand yourself, not understanding yourself, trying to help yourself but failing horribly, all sorts of things. But to see these beautiful sceneries and creatures, dwelling somewhere I cannot even imagine, takes me back to the time I wanted to leave everything behind but decided to stay to see something as wonderful, kind of like homesickness, a warm darkness(ironic considering that it's freezing down there) I'm glad I could make it through! And I'm glad I'm still making through everything! And I'm grateful everyone who made this video and this beautiful channel possible, everyone who watched it, and those you'll watch it in future, made through it as well! (My punctuation is bad) but hey again, thank you for existing. Everyone.

The thought of living an entire lifetime with no surfaces or environmental objects, in utter darkness, cold temperatures, and very little food sources, has got to be the most alien ways anything could live out an entire life. I don't comprehend HOW anything could not be driven to explore to at least find something, anything, besides... Just utter nothingness.. It's eerie to even imagine attempting to living an entire lifetime such as this.. It's so bizarre
