Hello am wondering if this software is one to own an not s a subscription service as is the case with such software as Adobe Photoshop CC or Substance Painter. Also can you export/import 3d models to paint onto etc?

Hey, no 3d coat does not have a subscription model (at the time of writing). But I do believe we buy per version, so for example if you buy now (Version 4), you get all updates for free. But when Version 5 comes out that will be another one-time purchase (previous version owners usually get a discount)

Thanks so much for these tutorials. I love 3D Coat but the toolset is overwhelming. Also there seems to be many "gotchas" that a beginner (like me) can get tripped up on. Please keep doing more. BTW Udemy has only one series on 3D Coat. Your's would do well.

Oh for sure, there's a million "gotchas" as you say, but on the whole I find 3dc a lot easier to pick up than any other sculpting software I've used. Its main drawback is that it's quite likely you'll run into bugs or just "odd behaviour". In the past I would lose days worth of work, but it's pretty stable now and keeps getting updates.

very funny....thanks. good idea making these. game artist here as well. this is a great program that has thought about all the parts of making a game asset easier. it keeps getting better and better as well.

do you finish your sculpts in zbrush first and then move onto 3d coat or do you go straight in with 3d coat? please + thank you.

I thought this was a GREAT first video attempt. I am a bit of a software junkie, I purchased 3D Coat a long time ago, then never bothered to use it (I do that a lot......). My only critcism was that I didn't understand what a Voxel was, and so I was left wondering..... I'm sure you've gotten a lot better since this first attempt, so I'll go discover on your channel :) Thanks for the intro!

Thanks Jez, I should probably warn you though that I've stopped making 3d coat videos a long time ago. I still use the software every now and again for texturing but I've actually moved mostly onto Blender for modelling/sculpting. I don't have any tutorials for Blender yet though, I hope to do some in the future.

I just started using this and omg it is so simple! One thing that bothered me during UV mapping tho was that there only seems to be a unwrap for the whole UV set and not for a single UV. Which made it kind of a pain if you have to go back and fix something cause the UVs got shuffled around after you already had them where u wanted them :( I might have missed something tho so if anyone knows how to do this if you can I'd love to know, I googled to no avail!

You can select an individual (or multiple) uv island, then press space to bring up the menus (or check to the left of the screen) and you should see some odd things with terrible icons that say things like "to planar" there's a few to choose from, sometimes works nicely.

@@PolyToots Thank you so much, it doesn't seem to have a Unwrap funtion there tho :/ Unless that is what the To GU or to ABF does? It feels like such and obvious function to have

Yes, the GU, ABF, Planar etc buttons are unwrapping algorithms. You just need to select one or more of your uv islands and hit one of the buttons. Each unwrapping method will try to unwrap your selection in a different way.

Thanks so much in advance, I learned blender through tutorials and 3d coat is my next evolution. I need these kinds of things. You should consider a udemy course as well. From beginner to advanced. I’de buy a more in depth, “the tricks of my trade” for a larger price tag.

Headus UV Layout stills rocks, but i will give it try at the UVS section.... learning 3d coat because it runs great on my pc unlike Substance P.....

I think this program is a mix of Zbrush and Substance painter and the price is really low.

It has a much greater potential than a lot of industry standard softwares, but it falls short in a few areas regarding stability and glitches/bugs. These get fixed over time, but with such a small team it often takes a long time for them to even notice issues. If you can forgive its flaws, it is an amazing piece of software.
