We head back up to Kibler Valley for a fun filled couple days of kayaking. Mike Hatcher and Kyle Micou meet me on Friday to cut the wood from the river in preparation for Saturday's Paddle with the group. Mike and I also got some river time as we did a little one on one intro to continual flow. Saturday found Wondering Electrician, Shaphan, Guy, Evan, P5 and me taking on the river in Continual Flow part 2. A lot of progress was made on Saturday! There were some bells, some crashes, and some goats. What a great day of paddling! Come along and enjoy some great kayaking on The Kibler Valley Section of the Dan River. The dam was generating at 9000kw both days.

"Today's strokes were not just paddles strokes. Today's strokes were meaningful strokes." It's like when I'm in church, the preacher will say something that just sticks. I can't remember 99% of anything said, but that one thing will stay with me forever. I don't think I'll ever paddle again without those two sentences going through my head. And it will make me a better paddler for having heard it. Thanks for that.

Pete what’s your thoughts on the flying squirrel. Also I’m loving the video’s. I did one myself Sunday not as good as yours but it’s nice to try
@RiverKingsKayak
@RiverKingsKayak 4 года назад
Well, I have the 95. That is 16 gallons larger than my jefe and about a foot longer as well. It is faster, holds a line well and I am getting used to it. I would still prefer my jefe. The extra volume is what I was after for the class 4/5 kayak camping that I intend to do here shortly. The faster boats do well in big water. If water-falling/creeking/low volume stuff etc., the jefe is so forgiving and easy to correct and control. The squirrel comes from boat lineage that is fast and actually once you set the course, it can be hard to change that. Again, exactly what you want in big water, but not in super tight spaces. The jefe is not that fast, so powering through big water holes can be more difficult. It is always a trade off! One thing I do not love about the squirrel are the low chines behind the seat. They lead to a grabby stern in weird water or some high volume side currents. It is something that doesn't do me in, but gives me that not-so-great feeling, then it goes away. I am really used to that already, but wish it was different. Hope that helps! I'll check out that video...

What’s wrong with a back stroke? Sometimes do that to slow down before a feature to check it out before powering through it. I’m novice / intermediate so genuine question!
@RiverKingsKayak
@RiverKingsKayak 3 года назад
Great question Sam! There is nothing wrong with the backstroke. However, in Mike's situation, he paddled so defensively with backstrokes that he would lose all forward momentum and lose control of the boat as the current from the rear would start pushing his stern one way or the other. He was just unable to maintain some forward momentum to control the boat. Backstrokes will always be a vital tool. Just for Mike, it was the majority of strokes he was taking and causing a lot of trouble for him...hope that makes sense.

@mobileradiofitter 3 года назад
Great video series. I'm searching for help with a situation I've encountered a few times now. River bend. I'll do my best to explain. Wide river shallow on right deep on left. River bends right. Very fast deep water flow on the left pushing unto the left river bank. I keep getting slammed into the left river bank. When I try to steer out of it the kayak just turns sideways or try to turn around. I got out of the river recently and took some video I will upload soon
@RiverKingsKayak
@RiverKingsKayak 3 года назад
Thanks mobileradiofitter! Sounds like an ineffective ferry issue. Sometimes, in those situations, you need to point your boat to the opposite shoreline and paddle hard...sometimes pointing upstream depending on how hard the current is pushing...If you have video, I could possibly give more insight...

Pete, what's the average time to do this run? And how long is it?
@RiverKingsKayak
@RiverKingsKayak 4 года назад
Our first run was about 2 miles and the second about 3 due to using different takeouts. The second run took less than an hour as we were motoring down the river having a great run. The first run took twice as long due to 4 swims and a bigger group. It is hard to put an average on it really. Hope this helps!
@MichalKubinec
@MichalKubinec 3 года назад
Awesome video, I really enjoy it. But why do you always highlights swimmers? Did you never swim in the river in the beginning? ;-)
@RiverKingsKayak
@RiverKingsKayak 3 года назад
He he he! I didn't start this swim shaming thing! When our group started, an occasional swim would occur during our kayak camping trips. The guys (new kayakers) would beat themselves up over a swim so badly even though I told them it was a part of the fun. It became a thing and has taken on a life of its own. There is no real shame in any of it. Just a fun bit in the videos. The crew nowadays enjoys and most feel it adds to the entertainment. Plus, you only have two choices...roll or swim...

I'm sure that can be applied to many of the paddlers in the vid, who in particular are you referring to? As for the paddle, I recently got P5's paddle used. Not really a blem paddle, but rather a demo inventory item. I got it from 4corners riversports in Colorado.
