I have given up competitive shooting and only (range) shoot now for load development and enjoyment. Reloading, for me, is pure relaxation and focus. Keeps the missus away because she thinks it is boring, lol. Still have my "oh shit" moments but hey, life's like that, lol. Cost is a factor, but not as major as it used to be, the art of reloading is now the major factor and it is an art to get the performance from your own hands. Love it! And yes, I'm a RCBS owner/user, press, measure, trimmers, scales, dies, blocks, etc. I'm also an old fart (60+) with all my fingers still intact, lol. Faculties - well not for me to say, lmao! Cheers from downunder.
I find it rather therapeutic. It is relaxing and helps me concentrate. As for the cost effectiveness... I shoot 5.56/.223 at a cost of .15 cents per round verses the cheap bulk ammo of .32 cents per round. And my reloads are by far more effective in accuracy terms. Shoot lots and stay safe.
