I’m glad I came back to this years after filming it in year 7, probably wouldn’t have been able to handle all these comments showing some sort of bitterness towards the other minorities being used here. You guys really need to chill, it was simply convenient for the BBC to call in local schools to do filming as most of the schools in London. as far as I’m aware of, are filled with minorities. Furthermore, there are PLENTY of shows, trailers, movies and other sources of Media that feature a majority white cast and are far more significant. Are you really going to let some insignificant trailer that’s years old bother you that much? Do white people have to be featured in absolutely everything? Yes, most of the UK is white, but not everyone.

Man, I feel ya. Some people have a rabid obsession with skin colour because it's the only thing they have going for them. Fascist propaganda is incredibly effective against people who feel powerless and seek simple answers in an incredibly complex world.

@jimharris9394
@jimharris9394 4 года назад
Tolly, There are a couple of reasons why this could be happening. 1. You are using a defective/miswired USB cable. Sounds odd, but it does happen. 2. The micro:bit you received was truly defective. Again, unlikely, but it does happen. Did you have a battery attached at the same time? Did you try it with ONLY a battery attached? Let us know what happens!

***** I mean, what does this device really add? Most kids have a computer that is infinitely more powerful, expandable, and useful than this watered down microcontroller. Most kids will do maybe a small thing with it, and then it'll be resigned to the drawer of useless tech. The kids that are truly interested will no doubt move on after a day or two to something like an Arduino, or more useful languages like C, or Python etc.
@julesverne6287
@julesverne6287 9 лет назад
***** Google GW BASIC. There you go, a fully functional programming language that has both access to a myriad of functions, and is simple to understand. Easy to download, setup, and I'm sure that nowadays, printed material on it is fairly cheap. That's the language I learned first, and I remember the ability to just get a computer to say "hello" amazed me. I still have a few of the old books I used to read on my bookshelf. I'm sure there are more modern forms of BASIC, BBC BASIC of course would have been a good replacement for this device ;) Yes modern hardware might be complex,with parallel processing, modern GPUs, and the many paradigms of modern programming, but only if you introduce that complexity straight away. Now, years later, C++ and Haskell are a godsend for me compared to the rudimentary syntax of GW BASIC. But good old Gee Whiz will always have a place in my heart. Also, I'm 15, so don't imagine I'm some nostalgic old man reliving his early days behind rose tinted glasses... ;P

You’re a television broadcaster BBC, Why do you make your own mini computers? I mean!, Look at what Ardruino’s doing.
@jimharris9394
@jimharris9394 4 года назад
Why? Because the BBC has a mandatory educational role as part of its role as a broadcaster. Unlike other countries - the U.S. being a prime example - the BBC is actually and legally required to operate in a way that is truly "in the public interest". A lot of what the BBC does is intended to be educational, even if it doesn't involve direct broadcasting of television programs. The micro:bit, Arduino, Raspberry Pi, (etc.), all fill different needs. The micro:bit was designed, first of all, to be complete in itself, requiring nothing other than something to program it - which can be done with a smartphone, tablet, iPad, or laptop. It was designed to be cheap enough to "give away" and if one gets destroyed by accident, no big loss - especially when ordered in quantity. It's supposed to be able to be stuffed into a shirt-pocket, batteries and all. And most important of all, it was designed to give "kids" an opportunity to mess with, program, play, and have fun with a computer-like device that would help them learn that today's products aren't just "magic in a box" There are real components, real programs, real designers and programmers that all have to work together to make something as simple as a micro:bit, or as complex as a rocket mission to Mars, work the way it is supposed to. The Arduino can do very little on its own - it needs to be hooked up to ***something*** to be useful - a shield, a proto-board with wires and components, whatever. The 'Pi needs a mouse, keyboard and monitor, (at least at the beginning), to make it work. Likewise, the 'Pi is designed for a much more advanced audience than the micro:bit - it's essentially a credit-card sized Linux "desktop". It's not something you can throw into your pocket or backpack, take it to your friends and play with it. All three do different - but equally valuable - jobs. I have several of each of them and they all have a treasured place in my lab. Though, I have to admit that the micro:bit, (and things like the GiggleBot), out-cute the 'Pi or Arduino any day of the week!

Cute toy, but for the love of god don't tell kids they can put that in their pocket. ESD would fry it and they'd have to buy a new one soon after.
@jimharris9394
@jimharris9394 4 года назад
It's not as bad as you think. If you look at the datasheets for the main components that reach the edge connectors, they all have some kind of built in ESD suppression. It's intended to be dirt-cheap, essentially a throw-away if it gets damaged. Additionally, the designers anticipated that it would be damaged by mishandling, (i.e. Being stepped on, run over by a bicycle, etc), long before ESD became an issue. And yes, it comes in a small ESD bag that the kids can use to store it. One last thing:. It's an educational "toy". Part of the education should be on proper ESD handling - insofar as smaller kids can understand and do. That, and its inherent ESD resistance, should be enough to provide the necessary protection, for at least long enough to out-grow it.
