Years ago when this video first released I was a little kid a watched through it. Got to the part that says you shouldn't shoot the sun with your zapper and it spooked my so much as powered off my parents computer and ran. Never seen it since then and used to get weird nightmares about it, took me a while but I found it again. Hope this story interested you in some way.

Duck Hunt is my grandmother’s favorite NES game ever; along with SMB3. Although I’m a major fan of both games, my favorite Zapper Game will always be Wild Gunman.
Each target gets its own frame to be lit up. Multiple targets are never lit up on the screen at the same time. If they were all lit up at once it'd be impossible to detect which one was fired at. Detecting targets has nothing to do with scanlines. HDTVs only fail with the zapper because of their high video latency, not anything to do with scanlines. CRTs have virtually no latency while HDTVs can have excessive latency up to 60-70ms (or worse). For reference a single game frame at 60Hz is on screen for about 16ms. With 60ms of video latency, the zapper registers a miss because the black frame it needs to detect is three frames in the future and not on the screen yet.
Thank you for backing up the 2 player aspect of Duck Hunt by the way. I insisted it was a feature in the game since I was 5 years old and few people sat around long enough to let me prove it!
The Master System had a game that mixed all kinds of things together with a lightgun game. They had you controlling a soldier while you did all the shooting withnthe zapper. It was a blast...I can't remember what it was called. I can think of quite a few things you could do with a lightgun peripheral. I have played driving games that had you shooting things while you were driving and it was super sweet (arcade). Hell, you could get two player playing at once. One person say storming an enemy outpost either in first person or third while your friend plays overwatch as a sniper. Oh yes, I can think of many things and I have witnessed tons of differing lightgun titles.
I thought this was going to be a bare bones review of the NES zapper but you actually went and did a history lesson on lightguns! That's awesome! Keep up the good word. You're doing great!

Time Crisis at the arcade consumed so many of my quarters. I actually never owned an NES, but I loved Hogan's Alley when I got to play it. I loved shooter games, rarely bought them. Offhand, Lethal Enforcer was my fav. Oh and the Genesis light gun...Menacer? Coolest peripheral! It had a detachable stock and a "scope" mount. I think I had a Toe Jam & Earl shooter and maybe one other game. Loved the design, but it needed more games! Thanks for the remembories ;P
The bulb trick works IIRC if you are in a dark room and point the zapper away quickly enough as you pull the trigger. You can't just point at a light source.
The orange tip thing didn't come about until around 1989. By that point, the Genesis was out, and the SMS wasn't getting a lot of attention any more... But they did do an orange-tipped version of the Phaser, apparently.
WOW! I always thought the flash of black and white was an aesthetic choice in the games! Thanks for the tech lesson! PS: I took me 20 years to find an orange zapper.
I converted mine into a functioning rail gun. It seems to have solved the HDTV detection problem, you can definitely tell when you hit your target now. But uh...well, some other issues became immediately evident.
Got a second hand NES from someone. Came with a bunch of games, including the Duck Hunt/Super Mario Bros. combo. Even had the Zapper, but my grandma threw it out the second I got the system because she didn't want me playing with guns. So, even though I had Duck Hunt, to this day I still haven't got the chance to play it. I used to turn the game on every now and then a think, "Well, maybe the controller will work this time." No such luck.
I always heard this urban legend about if you pressed the trigger so many times within X amount of time on an NES Zapper, you could actually blow a TV up. It'd be awesome if it were true :)

Great video as always, and an awesome look at one of the most beloved peripherals in gaming history! As I was watching, I peered over and looked at my zapper and then at the lamp I'm sitting under. Now I really want to try out this trick.
I'm pretty sure that at least part of the reason that the zapper does not work on HD TV's is because of latency. CRT displays are quite reliable when it comes to how long it takes the signal from a device to display fully on the monitor, and it comes out to a very minuscule amount of time, whereas TV's these days need to process fully to refresh, and thus have a delay by several milliseconds to hundreds of milliseconds. Sure, it's not noticeable to humans, but that short time makes a difference.
I've always thought about having a display wall of video gaming light guns. Simply because so many look so awesome. People would probably get the wrong idea thinking its pro violence but they look so cool.....merely an idea.
Rinry I thought Duck Hunt was adopted in an old Nintendo Toy in the 70's called the Clay Pigeon shooting or Duck Hunt in Japan..,.. The Ducks are in a light projection and when you shoot it the duck quacks which was the quack in the game......

Well most people have the super Mario bros/duck hunt cart. It was a pack-in cart for a long time. If you have a zapper, I highly recommend you get duck hunt and hogans alley!
