@nonnahs918
@nonnahs918 10 лет назад
CDs can store a lot more information than a cartridge. If modern games came on cartridges they would be huge! They wouldn't be NES sized cartridges, they would be the size of a small dog.

@navi-charlotte
@navi-charlotte 10 лет назад
nonnahs918 The reason for the shift to optical media was not capacity, but cost. I am sure you have seen some USB pendrives with a capacity of even 128 GB. Discs give game companies more GB per buck, the only disadvantage is that they are much slower to read from (reason why in early CD systems like the PSX games needed to load for so long)

@flaminhydra2092
@flaminhydra2092 10 лет назад
we moved on with CDs because they can store more megabytes than the games inside the cartridge. the advantages of using CDs was that dumb consumers such as i would constantly buy the same game due to the fact that CDs would break every time,from accidentally scratching them to even playing the game with repetition. as a young teenager, i can break games easily unintentionally, and i expect the gaming market to find a way to make us play games without the use of CDs (and making us share games as well, because Microsoft's xbox one tried that method but shamefully failed with me not being able to share downloaded games with my friends). and until they can fix this method of playing games i might not go on towards the next-gen gaming. i wonder if i'll do good with pc gaming....

The question if you can drill through an NES cart should be pretty easy to figure out for yourself. The circuit board itself is made of plastic or fiberglass. You can drill through that and nothing would happen. As long as you don't drill through the components on the board, or any of the conductive traces, you could drill as many holes as you wanted.

It's about time we see a girl do a youtube series of gaming! People need to realize it is not a one-gender sided activity. Anyone can really pick up a controller and play, but there are few actual passionate females out there over it, you just have to dig around the fake ones (the ones that most likely say they play Call of Duty, but don't know another title to any other game period....not that Call of Duty is a bad game, it's really popular and yet not my cup of tea, but the fake ones just use it to get attention). :( But basically, I'm so sick of not seeing many REAL girls out there who really ARE passionate about it, until I saw RinryGameGame! Nowadays, games really suck. They are all about this: "KILL THOSE FREAKING PEOPLE!!! SHOOT'EM!!!!!!!!! PUNCH'EM!!!!!!!!". Most of my friends like these games and they're wasting all their time with CoD, GTA V and CS 1.6 but these games have absolutely NO replay value in my opinion. Retro games are completely unforgettable and they're still fun to play. They always have variety like puzzles, bosses etc. They have collectibles which are more useful than guns and ammo and other stuff. HATERS GONNA HATE!!!

Y'now what? I'll just sit down and play any game on a Genesis/Mega Drive rather than buying a console that costs tons of money and playing "MURDER THEM ALL" games. Running from A to B is much better than getting lost in a giant world. That's my opinion, sorry.

I grew up playing NES and SNES. There were some amazingly fantastic games during that era that I feel were never met with equal successes by sequels in those franchises (Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy VI, Super Metroid, to name a few.) That said, over the last 20 years, gaming has improved significantly. Bioshock, REmake, Uncharted 2, come to mind as more recent examples of outstanding games that have made my list of awesome games.

Yeah, this brings a huge question into my head. Why, with all the technology of today, are we using such FRAGILE things to play video games, or hold any sort of media? Why can a Nintendo 64 be dropped on concrete and left for months and still work (I found an N64 behind a dumpster once, and it STILL worked, even having pieces of plastic missing), but an XBox 360 can't even survive being USED for too long or else it Red Rings, or the aluminum casing inside of it melts causing it to be useless. Also, CDs. Why? Why CDs? Companies argue on how CDs can hold more memory than a cartridge, but that's a crock of shit! Even a CD of the newest video games only holds about 5 - 10 GB of memory. Why can't we use chips surrounded in plastic casing? Like a RAM chip that's programmed to hold useable memory. There's single RAM chips that are built to process 64 GB of memory, and you're telling me that CDs are the ONLY way? I'm tired of barely touching a CD just to find out it doesn't work because of minor scratches, then to have to either replace the game or buy a device that "fixes" CDs that usually doesn't work at all! Why not make games off of Flash Drives? Impossible? I can run my computer's OS off of a Flash Drive, actually I AM RIGHT NOW! Linux Kubuntu runs off of my 4 GB Flash Drive. Also, Amazon just released that thing to watch Netflix and Hulu, which is just a fucking Flash Drive you plug into your TV! Why can't we run GAMES off of them? I'd rather have a bunch of tiny thumb drives stored safely than a bunch of CDs and cases laying around, no matter HOW organized I try to be. CDs are stupid, and should have never been made the main way to store and play games on. Flash Drives are a lot better of a resort. Or even chips, like I said before.

CDs ARE cheaper to make, that's why companies switched to them.
@skaterloogaming4486

But they're not significantly cheaper to make than CDs. It wouldn't burn a hole in their profits any more than paying their workers more money would -_- so, it's just selfishness.

Skaterloo Gaming Well actually, nintendo would have made a lot more money with the N64 if they did not stick to cartridges. They had good reasons for staying with cartridges instead of switching to CDs, but in the long run, It hurt them. Playstation sales were significantly higher than N64 sales. And, like NeedMoreMushrooms said, CDs were cheaper to make. I don't know if this is still true today, but back then, CDs cost less than a dollar to make. Also CDs could do a lot more in some places compared to cartridges. And since cartridges cost much more, third-party companies turned to Playstation to make games for them. So there is an example of why CDs are a thing today.

cd vs cart? cart wins. sure you had more space for graphics but the carts were easier to manufacture. plus, nothing beats contra. nothing!

expensive how? plastic is universally availabe. also, i don't care for contra force. that one is too slow.

but they're easier to crack and scratch. plus carts are cheaper and more games can be fit per megabyte. remember maxi 15? 15 games in a cart for around 19 dollars or sega's 6 in 1.

One of my friends was givern a copy of Legends of zelda, but his friend said he could only have it if he left it burried for 3 years. 3 years after it was burried, my friend dug it up and (since he no longer had an NES) he gave it to me and it still works perfectly fine.

i think the only nes games that can be damaged easier is castlevania III and action 52 due to the circuit boards of those games taking up the entire shell space. besides those, its almost impossible for these things to break (unless you scratch the contacts something fierce. RIP my 3d world runner cart).

Once found a half buried copy of double dragon (had tread marks huge chunk of the cart was broken off) and a game genie that looked like it was hit with a hammer when I was kid in the bushes at school. Took the cart home gave the board a good scrub and put it in a copy of WrestleMania worked like a champ!

I thought this was going to be about game difficulty. :) Out of hundreds of NES games (I currently have over 550) I have encountered only a few that didn't work no matter what. I had a corroded copy of Zelda that I returned after determining that it was completely dead, and I've restored some pretty corroded games before (you should see my 2nd copy of TMNT which needs dielectric grease to restore corroded pin conductivity!). Another was a minty-looking copy of PIN-BOT which didn't even work with a ROM transplant in another working copy's PIN-BOT PCB (not very many other TQ-ROM boards). The third was Yo! Noid, which would push into the cartridge and fail to make a connection due to a broken plastic bit (board worked fine). The last was a mislabeled copy of Batman (NES Play Action Football shell) where some previous owner was likely confused and tried to pull the PCB out with pliers instead of opening the shell. Many of the contacts were missing, short, or mangled. Recognized the music!

I just experienced the greatness of these games' durability first hand. I just moved and while unpacking some of my cartridges I dropped one and it fell on the solid concrete floor. Yet when I tried it out it worked perfectly. AMAZING!

Some Irish guy shot one up with BB guns, and it still played. Try that with a CD-ROM style game like they make today!

My NES was doing that stupid thing where it's stuck on the white screen. I seen how she put some of the cartridges in like, by kind of wiggling them in and I did that to mine and it worked. Whoever you are, you're a hero.
