The Saab is a lovely motor. It's a shame we lost them along the way, they were always that bit different from everything else and seemed to have an extra bit of class about them.

My daily is a 2.0d Jaguar Xtype it’s on 204,000 miles and I love it 😂 I’d rather the Saab over the Passat tbh.

It's the gearbox turret selector you can get a repair kit I did mine a couple of months ago

A dodgy gear linkage on a Corsa B drove me insane once. A whole week under the car, tried a thousand times then drove it to the scrapyard with 2nd and 4th

I used a Passat for a while when l did a bit of taxi driving, my Vectra was in the garage and I borrowed a Passat, drove absolutely gorgeous, didn't want to give it back, as much as I loved the Vectra, the Passat just felt a cut above.

Don't talk to me about gears Ben. I did my HGV test in a Bedford TM 4 ton, 1st & reverse gears were so close together, that you prayed when you moved off at a junc etc. So many learners were failed! PS; those were the days on test you had to stop, going down the gears. It is frowned upon now. Rightly so, brakes are cheaper than clutches!

You just reminded me, many years ago I drove a Triumph Herald van, after a few events pulling away from lights things went very much in the wrong direction. I learnt very quickly to pull the gearlever into second and then push it straight forward into first, thereby avoiding setting off astern. You may find this applies to the Spitfire if it has the Triumph gearbox.

You get a better time from the b6 if you hold the brake and accelerator then lift off the brake . Not just stomping on the throttle

I hope that era of Passat doesn't still have the lump of water adsorbing foam inside the front wings, although I suspect it does. You'll be doing a video on replacing the rusted through wings down the line.

I once hired one of these with a Cadillac badge and it had the same issue with the selectaah: teeny tiny travel between 1st and R.

I've done a cables conversion on my F18 Cavalier gearbox in my Astra VXR powered Corsa B and my gearstick has always been a bit notchy, no return to the centre etc. Will take a look at the bushing and see if it helps, thanks!

I had a 300k mile Skoda Octavia with the 1.9 PD engine and every time you went through a puddle the gear change got very stiff. Replaced it with a "new" selector from the scrapyard and it was as good as new.

Changing gears is driving that's the skill not auto which is why there are two different driving tests ❤

Although I love the Saab, yeah - I’d choose the Wagon too. My Mondeo wagon has been brilliant for all kinds of random jobs + having an auto for commuting just makes more sense. And I love wagons. Mainly because they’re not an unnecessary SUV.

Do love those old VAG diesels. My parents have a 2009 Octavia they have owned since new with less than 80k on the clock. I have my eye on that if they ever decide to sell it

I worked at VAG in the late 90's! My pride and joy is a MKIV Polo (or a MKIII if you're that way inclined) and I often joke that I probably walked past it sitting in the massive car park that was VAG in Blakelands. I've only ever owned VW's because they're just the absolute best. My friend had an uncle that worked for Ford so he got discounts on the cars. One year (probably about the same year as my Polo was made) he bought a KA and I couldn't believe how utterly shite it was. Just flimsy plastic and spit holding it together. No other car I've ever been in has topped a VW, even my neighbour's Merc (aka German taxi). You'd have to pry my Polo out of my cold, dead hands, never letting him go!

My saab 93 convertible tid isn't as bad but , getting it into neutral requires muscles in my arm so I'll be getting that done in due course! Great video + I like your tongue and cheek to fixing car's! I would get frustrated by now. Lol!

I'd love a Saab like that for a daily, I've got a little Mk1 Fabia vRS. I'm glad you got the gears sorted!! I would take the Passat over the Saab though. Practicality is second to none, I am biased though as I have an R36 🙈

I remember when I changed the gear selector rubbers in my G-rege fist uno! Agen a huge improvement, thow turns out they aren't that brilliant from factory eather 😂😂

Big un the Mr2 does 0-60 quicker than the passat your 9.81 was a little bit out as the speedo was incorrect.Ive now got a digital mph reader and its under 9.5

Wow, second hand cars are cheap in Britain…. 750 💷 for a mot Passat with all that leather, dsg and fully optioned interior. That’s a better deal than the Wasabi although the Saab is a much more individualistic car. Here in Germany you would have paid more than three times the price…. wonder why that is?

Better off with a CVT or the Aisin AW55-51SN 5AT that was optional (here in the US anyway) in the 9-3 over the DSG. After having driven/ridden in my aunts 2010 VW CC W/DSG the DSG is complete junk unless something was wrong with hers.

Does the Passat not have launch control being a DSG model? S mode, ESP off, brake, gas, let off brake. If it doesn't work, you should be able to code it in for the lols.

Great video, not a great fan of Saab's but well done for getting the bugger in gear, fookin' nightmare jobs . As for the VW, big fan and the DSG box is the best auto box out there! On my 3rd VAG ,they don't disappoint! Looks like the Spitfire is staying blue? Cheapest way and keeps value , good move .. Luvin' your work !

I prefer the VW Passat estate myself easy to put my welder and tools in as I'm not that lucky to have a small unit don't matter about the mileage as long it's been serviced regularly being a diesel how many vehicles you want 🤪 think you need to sell some as you have not got the time or room to fix them all 😂

@ben I've had a few saabs in the past there a nice car to drive I've been looking to see if i can get a straight swap I've got a peddle assist folding bike cost £500 new and my aftershave collection my aftershaves cost over £1000+ so if anyone has a saab with long mot and is after a straight swap/barter the collection have only been opened to smell with some being tested let me know if anyone is tempted

DSG is really good gearbox, until you going thrue city near the intersection, really slowly because of trafic at something like 25 km/h. Then there is sudenly a gap on busy intersection between cars and you clearly safe to jump in to that gap.... (remember, you are goink ~25 km/h at this point) and you press accelerator andddd..... absolutely nothings happening for something like a secon or two. By that time this gap is nearly closed and you ended up by roaring car in to the full intersection.... I have Golf mk7 and I hate that car only because this stupid gearbox....

Hmm, the mileage history of that Passat doesn't look like its had a speedo change, it looks like its been clocked several times. 😅 48K, 82K, 87K (sus), 121K, 118K (uh oh!), 137K, 151K, 156K (sus), 156K again (sus-er), 158K (sus), 158K again but 150 miles less (uh oh!) Be interesting to have the ECU read to see the true mileage, I recon its got 250 - 300K on it. But for £750... I wouldn't care. 😂

It’s a 2010 Audi A4 avant 2.0 TDI S-line in black and its a non runner due to issues with the gearbox the flywheel and the clutch. I know it’s not the kind of car you usually restore but this car has been in my family since 2013 so it means a lot to me and if you don’t have it’s going to the scrap man and i don’t want that to happen.
