As an INFP I agree that INFPs can be bad people, like any other type. :) But I don't think john was that bad. Not an angel, but not that bad either. I think that seeing INFPs as selfish is a misconception (I'm not sure if that's exactly what you think, but I've seen this around RU-vid, so I just wanna talk about it for a second). Personally, I do many things that I don't wanna do for the people I care about. It's not like "I'll always do exactly what I want and I don't care about the world because my actual world is inside my head". that's defiantly not true, lol. But I do have my boundaries. As an INFP, when I'm depressed I know exactly why - if it's the situation, the people around me, etc. That's why I'll try to fix it (for example, by not being around a toxic person anymore). I also know if something that people want me to do will make me depressed, So I try to avoid that. Honestly, I think everyone should do this, your mental health should be a priority, it's not selfish (in my opinion) to take care of your soul. I think other people would probably do the same if they were more in touch with their feelings and the reasons for them. Anyway, interesting video and an interesting channel. :)

My oldest son tested as an INFP when he was younger. I think that is his true type...very creative, sensitive, compassionate, perceptive...If you are an INFP by nature then you will attract more toxic and troubled people, because they likely sense that you are more forgiving than most people, and they know they mess up a lot! I have experienced that as an INFJ as well. An INFP is not likely to seek retribution once someone has taken advantage of them one too many times, but they will eventually retreat. I am similar as an INFJ, but I am more likely to dwell on the offenses for a very long time. I do this partly because I am still trying to ponder some way to fix it, and I am so angry that I can not figure out a way. My son is more likely to simply walk away. He can move onto something new and stop living in the past better than I can, and maybe that looks selfish to some people. I think is just necessary for self-preservation, especially when you are so deeply affected by the emotions of those around you.
@summerrain7915
@summerrain7915 4 года назад
@@juliemiller4763 I know, we really do tend to attract toxic people. And you are right, even though I do dwell on the offenses for a while, later I just move on. As long as I'm still in touch with this kind of person I still feel upset, but after I end the relationship the problem is fixed. Now it's their problem that they are such terrible people, not mine. they have to live with themselves for the rest of their lives, not me. I think the difference is that for me a relationship with a toxic person is not worth fixing. Once I've deemed that person toxic, I don't want a relationship with them, so I only think of how to leave. As you said, it may seem selfish to some people, but it's necessary. I only try to fix relationships with "normal", non-toxic people. In these cases I don't walk away, I do dwell on the offenses and feel the anger longer.

@Gremunky
@Gremunky 6 лет назад
Paul also wrote abstract songs, especially on his Ram album, but a song like blackbird exemplifies this
@thescowlingschnauzer
@thescowlingschnauzer 6 лет назад
Gremunky Blackbird is very concrete in its imagery. The only abstractions there are broken wings flying and light of the dark black night, which are direct oxymorons. Compare to John writing "Julia with seashell eyes." Very unorthodox image, and that's fairly concrete for John. I've heard it said that the Blackbird is about civil rights, but Paul doesn't complete that metaphor -- he only gives you the image. Compare to Bob Dylan writing "The answer is blowing in the wind." It's a word picture that you can't even visualize. Now that's abstraction.
@Gremunky
@Gremunky 6 лет назад
thescowlingschnauzer blackbird is only one example, like I said. However, I still disagree, I would say blackbird is far more abstract than concrete. The whole idea that the blackbird has been waiting all it's life for this moment, it's completely metaphorical. There is no blackbird, there are no broken wings, it hasn't been waiting. None of it is concrete at all.

I do believe John was an INFP. Although we are all about peace and harmony, we REALLY can neglect others in order to beneficiate ourselves or our willings, mainly if we have had enough from the outside world that doesn't let us be, as it is not so pleasent and it has no peace and harmony at all. We can get into this rebellious inner state in which we don't care anymore if we upset someone, as long as we don't upset ourselves. INFP's value their needs more than the needs of others, and when things get bad we can turn into really careless people, I think. Also, great video and love from Portugal 💜

INFPs can be dickheads too and INTJs can be kind. I know an INTJ friend who's more sympathetic and sociable with other people while I, as an INFP, come across as cold, aloof, and because I'm sometimes out of touch, I can make crude jokes that can hurt people.

There’s a less well known early song of Lennon’s that I think really exemplifies his INFPness. It’s called There’s a Place. “There’s a place where I can go when I feel low, when I feel blue, And it’s my mind And there’s no time When I’m alone.”

This triggered a lovely moment with my family ❤ I made them take the MBTI test a while ago but (inevitably) the terminology seemed like gobbledygook on a first encounter. My Dad is a classic ISFJ - empathetic, caring yet *extremely* practical and rooted in reality (as opposed to his often infuriating INFJ daughter who literally dashed out to film a cloud of butterflies mid-conversation 😅) Anyway! We all watched your video and it illuminated the difference between my Dad and the rest of us (INFJ Mum and my lovely INFP brother) then we watched James Corden's car pool karaoke with Paul 🙂 I assume that you've seen it? They visit Penny Lane and sing Let It Be, so it's kind of perfect for you... Thank you for inspiring such a wonderful shared moment. My family don't get to hang out together very much now so it was all the more precious. Wishing you a truly lovely Sunday.

It was just really lovely. My brother was about to dash back to London and it closed our brief time together perfectly 🙂

INFP artists/musicians can come off as complete jerks in interviews because they don’t want to explain the meaning of their songs or why they are writing them. David Lynch is an INFP director that straight up says, “No.” when asked to explain his movies. I think INFP males especially don’t come across as “nice” all of the time (especially being questioned by insincere interviewers).
@FrankJames

Paul is an ISFJ. He’s not flamboyant at all despite being a good looking chap. He’s also monogamous, huge deal in the 70s when feee love was everywhere. ISFJs are solid romantic partners, don’t quit easily. ISFPs are more a free spirit than ISFJs. David Bowie is a good example of ISFP. He’s actually very focused about his art, not loosely goosey at all.

This was such an effective way to demonstrate the difference! I also just enjoy hearing other people gush about the Beatles. I feel like "A Day in the Life" shows the John/Paul contrast really well, and within the same song. The John parts get all dreamy and surreal, but the Paul parts are extremely literal: "Woke up, fell out of bed, dragged a comb across my head. Found my way downstairs and drank a cup, and looking up I noticed I was late. Found my coat and grabbed my hat, made the bus in seconds flat..." etc.
@Missjunebugfreak

I agree wholeheartedly. John's parts to me always sounded a little sad and observational whereas Paul's part is very sweet and conversational. I think that's partly why that song is so amazing; it highlights the contrast in their writing dynamics wonderfully.

John is most likely an ENFP or INFP, simply because of how he interacts with other people, thinks, and how he expresses himself. ENFPs can come of as more of a “jerk” than INFPs in my opinion, but it’s mostly because they know what they want and are extremely impulsive, which could explain the many things he’s said that eventually ended up hurting people. So in my opinion, he’s probably either an ENFP or INFP.
@cynthiaforsythe8989
@cynthiaforsythe8989 Год назад
Agree. After watching the Get Back series, I thought parts 2 and 3 John was full out ENFP mode (think Robin Williams type energy). I think he retreated into INFP but was healthier as himself when we could see him being ENFP. he was also quite seductive like an ENFP- even to the cameras and hence, all of us watching
@Captrubarb
@Captrubarb Год назад
Yeah I can see the P too from his notorious laziness and time management difficulties. The E and I are often harder than it appears because just being outgoing in some situations doesn't mean that you draw your energy from there. As an INFP I can get quite "Robin Williams" like around small groups of people I know well and am comfortable with (or on a stage performing). But I shut down in social situations with new people or large groups of people in like a party type setting. So yeah John is a tricky one.

I agree with you it's very likely that Paul's an ISFJ, though he's probably the most hermetic beatle as far as showing his feelings and thoughts goes so I find it more difficult to understand him than John who I, like you, think was an INFP. I don't get why some people say an INFP has to be nice all the time and can't be a bad person: how you think and view the world and how you act can be two totally different things. As I see it, John had had so much pain in his life and experienced so many emotions he didn't know how to handle that sometimes he just exploded and did shitty things out of desperation or frustration, or as a cry for attention, hoping someone would realise his inner turmoil and save him. From some of his letters, interviews and what I've read in different books he knew when he'd done something wrong and regretted it, but most of the time he didn't try to fix it because he feared it would be impossible and was ashamed of facing whoever he'd slighted; he dreaded being rejected so he just hid or ran away from it and tried to forget it, which was interpreted as him not caring at all. That's what he did with Cynthia and Julian. That he was aware of what he did wrong, regretted it and wished it could be fixed doesn't make him a good person, but it does mean he often had good intentions but wasn't good at putting them to practice.

People feel the need to interpret the line because it comes in the middle of a song with some crazy and disturbing lyrics. If you pay attention to all the verses, it's about someone seeing the alienation all around him, while himself losing touch with reality. Mapped onto an MBTI perspective, the song is almost about what happens when you lose touch with the sensor side of your faculties.

Lennon's Imagine has both Judging and Perceiving all through it ...his J comes out when hes pretty sure that hes a dreamer and not the only one ..he also seems pretty convinced there is no heaven or hell to die for ...his P tendency comes out re how hes gonna imply this great social change ..A sleep in /sit in /getting high I think would be very much A P thing and then they would give up after the weekend and be onto something new. I guess we could find more J examples in Paul's philanthropist activities as the Beatles were very involved in community activities and donated quite a bit.Hope that helps a little by way of explanation.

First, I really enjoyed getting to “Nerd out” over this video. Second, I *think I would type Lennon as an INFP. In the negative, He was very passive-aggressive when he was irritated whilst being quite caring in the positive (I.e. allegedly John played out of tune on purpose so his Aunt (I think) could recognize which guitar was his). This may not be true, but it’s a nice sentiment. I don’t want to wax eloquent so I’ll stop here. Enjoyed it :)

I'm not one who ever dove deep enough into the world of analysis, or literacy .... But, I like both the abstract, and the literal ... I think Tori Amos a good example of combining the two, for what that's worth, which is probably pretty much nothing. Rock on. My favorite Beatley tune is Blackbird

Deborah Waltenburg I love Tori Amos! :D I've listened to her music since early childhood. After seeing the video I can see how she's a good example of that, I agree. And I'm the opposite with music, I like to go deeper into analysis/literacy and try to find a deeper meaning if I can, even though I don't all the time.

Selena Puckett I don't have the patience to do any deeper analysis, or the brain capacity :) For me, I think the sounds of the vocals, and melodies pull me in, first, lyrics, then, keep me focused. Tori Amos was the first pianist I ever saw that did anything other than classical or jazz-related tunes, and I was obsessed from minute one

I see John as being Ne all the way. The way his lyrics are more about taking concepts and turning them into something new and creative. Vs Ni which I would describe as doing something more similar to "uncovering" rather than creating. I also always thought John was an extrovert, but I would have to go back and watch interviews. INFP could make sense. John is either high Fi or low Fe. No aux Fe, so I don't see INFJ as a possibility (which you said in your video). If his vibe came from "I do what I want and I don't care what people think", I'd put him in the ENFP (or INFP) camp. But if it was more about instigating, challenging peoples' perceptions, getting a rise (wanting to affect people emotionally vs. Fi who wouldn't care), then I would put him in tertiary Fe/ENTP. ( Again, I really should watch interviews). I think XSFJ is a pretty good bet for Paul. I've always seen him as an Fe user, in part due to how much value he places in his audience and how he interacts with people. But also in the content of his songs - he goes for more universal themes in his writing and doesn't make it as personal as a lot of other songwriters might. As you said, he doesn't sing too much about his pain and prefers to keep things light and/or not focused on himself specifically. I relate to this as an Fe person. However, I also wouldn't rule out ENFJ as a possibility for Paul. I kind of always thought of him as being Fe and Se... though your example of Penny Lane did make me think of Si as well. I still see Fe/Se with him and I think he honestly might be skipping over his Ni in a lot of his songwriting. The reason I think this is maybe possible is that (in those times he *does* get abstract with us), it is in that Ni "uncovering" way I mentioned before rather than how I'd imagine Ne to come out. I think of Fool on the Hill and how it focuses on a concept rather than Ne possibilities and creativity. I guess I just gather Ni from him from time to time (and no Ne...) which made me also think ISFP at one point but I see too much Fe in him. *exhales* so there's my input. Clearly I enjoyed your video a lot for me to write so much, haha.

FJ, this was so cool. I loved the examples of N vs. S with song lyrics. Now I'm thinking about the songs I write. That's pretty fun. 😄 Let's examine one together, shall we? Love Song to the Redwoods. "As I stepped onto the trail, I expected quiet, but the breeze had been singing love songs through the branches." Well, I guess here's a question for you. Do intuitive writers generally make bigger use of personification and metaphor? Because I described my expectations and then my experience of some pretty intense FOMO from nature. I won't bore you with analyzing every single line of my own songs. I will say, looking through that lens, I see some striking examples of exploring the abstract and now understand why it bugs me when someone says "You should write a song about ______!" And they list something I just don't care enough about. I like to invite my listeners to think about something new. Here's another thought - what about musical choices in people whose primary function is N vs. S? Harmonic choices, arrangement/texture choices, etc...I don't have a ton of time to find examples of that right now, but I'll be thinking about it. Or would that also be expanding into the F/T realm? I'm in between workshops this weekend and I'll be listening to your podcast as I hike the marsh. :) See ya!

yeah i would definitely expect for intuitive types to tend towards writing with metaphors, because they are actually trying to write about things that are greater than words can really express. as far as the music itself, I am not so sure. John and Paul definitely were both skilled writers of melody. perhaps an Fe type will be much more attuned to what music would appeal to the general ear? Also, you should write a song about sports ;)

My daughter and I were talking about “Strawberry Fields” the other night. Apparently it was based on a childhood memory when he was still living at the orphanage. He would climb a certain tree that overlooked the wall where he could see strawberry fields. His caretakers would get very angry and the line “they’re coming to take me away “ was born. Nobody saw his view in his tree and the meaning it would have in his life, or ours when he wrote the song later. Does that change his category?

With intuitive types your mind is like a camera that's zoomed out. You see the entire landscape, but as a result you can't easily see the subtle features and small details of things. A sensing type on the otherhand is like having a camera that's always zoomed in. You see all of the small details but as a result you can't easily see the landscape ahead and how all of the things connect to each other.

P vs J really just means what function is extraverted first; and so a J type may be a bit more decisive, whereas a P type will be a little more observational. I did a quick video on it about a month ago, if you can dig it up!

Well, I'm an INFP, and I'm just as much of a jerk as John was. When you feel unwanted, no matter how much love you're trying to give people, after a while you learn how to convince yourself you don't give a shit about them. That's just the image of the jerk, you're not really a jerk, but you kind of want to be, otherwise being hurt that deeply just feels too unfair. Idk ..I couldnt see an E being able to write Imagine. Also if you compare the Beatles to the Stones we see the interplay I/ E dynamic play out. You see the calm subdued Beatles very much into their own minds very much into bigger thinking social justice issues. This is the exact opposite of the Stones very much into the moment and the rock and roll party life. Nothing really wrong with each approach. Also you will never be able to see an I move and bounce around like Jagger it's just not in our nature. That being said it's an interesting anology and only one I can offer an opinion on because I couldn't claim to be an expert . I will say that as an INFJ I definitely gravitate towards the Beatles

This is great, FJ! I love mixing all my favorite things in one video: FJ, music, Myers Briggs. So, gonna throw this out there, what do you think Dylan was? There's some huge debate on the internet about what personality he was, whether he was N or S, I or E. Again, I am horrible at typing people, but Bob in my opinion was N, but again I'm biased. I want him to be like me.

also, random, but if you haven't seen the video, there's a "blooper" from the "Eat the Document" film of Dylan and John Lennon in the back of Bob's car, Bob completely wasted and goofy, basically getting ill in the backseat, but it's pretty hilarious. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-9Xw6Ll9F38E.html

ha ha yeah I want him to be like me too. I have heard people type him as INFP and INFJ. Between the two INFP seems to fit more, since I've never seen him demonstrate an ounce of Fe, but then again he could be one of those weird jumper INFJs who favors Ti. I guess it's possible he could be like an ISFP or something, I am not well versed enough in Dylan as a person or MBTI to make an accurate judgement. It seems to me that many of his songs are stories, told firmly in the sensory world, but often times they are symbolic. Hmmmmm....

thatASMRchick I've heard Bob Dylan typed as both ISFP and INFP before too. I'd probably go with INFP. But he's kindof like Gordon Lightfoot that way who gets tossed around as both online. He could be very visually descriptive and literal at times, then go off and write a song like There are too many clues in this room that is more abstract.
@thatASMRchick
@thatASMRchick 6 лет назад
yes!! And yes! She was a great Dylan. I don't think people can type Dylan because he's such a chameleon tbh, but then again that may play into whatever his type is. He seems to have multiple personalities at least in what he produces outwardly. That's a big reason why I like him I think. I've tried to kind of learn more about him as a person, but his own autobiography has been proven to be inaccurate so it's kind of hard to! But that's the mystery.

First of all that's a great video, it explains the difference very well. I have a question, not realted to the video. Is there a connection between precentage of different MBTI types and their purpose in society? I got to thinking about it because I get that INFJ considered "visionary" and stuff, but how can we serv society in a real way, to actually do something, and can it be that it is the rarest personality because it is the most useless one?
@deniserocco2963

Sveta Ladigin no personality is useless. There is a purpose to each of us. There is a good side and bad side to each type. It depends on which side you choose to use.
@FrankJames
@FrankJames 6 лет назад
different types tend to get drawn to different fields of work, and so yeah you could say that each type has its own role to fill in society. You could be a visionary on any level, really, though I can understand how it might seem difficult to fit in somewhere and do meaningful work at the same time.
@AmandaExpressions
@AmandaExpressions 6 лет назад
This question REALLY moves me... I’ve often felt “useless”... but I’m starting to feel it’s especially because I think our society doesn’t value a lot of the abilities that come naturally to these types (and even intuitive types in general..) Something that keeps coming back to me these days on this, though I can’t remember the source, is how I heard someone talk about how INFJs back in the day would have been a community’s shaman or mystic. Their gifts would have been recognized and valued and they would have received proper training to develop their abilities... but that that has been kinda lost... This speaks to me because I’m feeling we have to find modern ways of reconnecting to these strengths and abilities... To our intuition! Everyone has access to this function, but it’s a natural state for Intuitives. We need to rediscover and develop these abilities ourselves since no one has shown us how. We have to grow and develop ourselves and find a way to use the insights we gather in a tangible way. Right now, for me I think that’s about finding a way that can really help, support or inspire people on their own path. I haven’t exactly found out what my way of doing that looks like yet. Everyone will have their own way of using these strengths... But that’s exactly where I’m at right now. Really trying to bring those strengths out in the world in a way that feels right, that finally feels useful... meaningful. I feel it’s hard to find... but possible. Just trickier than the traditional paths that are already established in our sensor world... but maybe, in the end, that’s the fun of it? Maybe this is part of our challenge with our time here? I definitely find that annoying and even depressing sometimes but when I think about it like this, it’s also kind of exciting... Whado you think? This moved me so much I decided to make a video... but still have much to say on this. Thanks for the inspiration. “Feeling Useless (INFJ/Intuitives)” ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-zpfmsh4fISc.html
