You may hear artists talk about intuitive painting and wonder what it means. How do you know what you intuition is telling you - and what do you do when your intuitive prompts make no sense?
In this video, I share some current paintings and explain how an intuitive nudge has led to a whole new body of work. For me the ideas come as I work - I never wait for inspiration to strike. Following my intuition and trusting myself has never let me down and I know the same is true for you.
I am on a mission to help artists find their own unique voice and make exciting, original artwork that is truly unique. If this sounds exciting, join my weekly artist's newsletter at www.louiseflet....
Each week, I share tips, tricks, advice, and inspiration to help you take your art to the next level.

I couldn't agree more with your message. I'm so tired of people on you tube crowing about sales and marketing with virtually no thought as to the meaning of their art. I love love love collage and do lots. Only problem I have is affixing them to canvas. They warp.

I have been collecting our personal bits of travels since we married 9 years ago, all over the world. We married after 40 years married to other spouses who passed with cancer. We met in high school in 1969. This is my soul telling me this is why I saved all the pieces. I did do a large digital piece about my life journey. It is on my living room wall. My husband knew what it was about as soon as he saw it. To do this with our travels will be a wonderful journey. Thanks for inspiring me, Louise. I am sitting here in Florida on a beautiful balcony on a cloudy day. It is marvellous. I am waiting until the rain stops so I can paint the day and add my memory. I will share with you when I am done. Warm Regards, L😊

As a psychologist I always love the depth of your work. I think I tuition is something we can grasp when we understand that each day even a drawn circle will feel and look different. Thanks so much for your contribution - it’s funny that intuitive work ultimately becomes more cognitive than planned out work in the end.

I used to get "a round tuit", now I really get "intuit" :). On another note, I really like your progressive art piece, inspires me to start another one myself. I once did a large, intuitive doodle drawing that took me 24 years to complete, working on it only when the magic happened between timing and inspiration in my early life. Looking at it now, the memories it evokes are more precious to me than anything I ever wrote in a journal. My words are hurried and jumbled and I can't even make sense of them now, but I can "see" my life in the drawing!

I totaly understand following your intuition. I'm happiest just exploring and playing with shapes, colors and Anything that I like. But here's the one issue I have. While "playing" I forget about composition. The finished piece has to be pleasant to look at even if I don't plan on selling it. How do you balance your enthusiasm for following your intuition with the necessity of composition. Or, as an artist, does the composition come naturally to you without much cognitive thought?
@ThisPaintingLife
@ThisPaintingLife Год назад
No it doesn't come naturally - but I don't push it. I need to explore and learn what I am trying to say before I have any idea about composition. Thanks for this question - you just inspired my next Sunday newsletter!

I absolutely love the 2 sanded collage pieces you are showing in the video and I would like to own the one or the other just as they are! They remind me of the old walls and advertising pillars ofmy childhood in Vienna, with posters and advertisements, , weathered ,then new ones sticked on and over, half removed again, and so it went on and on... I couldn't stop looking ! I don't use this really fascinating technique at the moment, although Iuse collage lately, but I could never stick a telegram with a message to join a funeral on one of my paintings, I hadn't the inner distance to not be sad and touched!

30 years ago I stopped painting, I lost my intuition. I started to worry about what people would think, if my paintings would sell, even though people would buy them before they were done. 10 years ago I started painting again, this time around I decided I wasn't going to sell my paintings or show them to anyone, before they were, at least, 3 years old. It have helped, maybe age have as well. I gotten over my "stage fright".

I have always loved and been intrigued by vintage ephemera...... the diaries, journals, business ledgers, handwritten letters, handwritten postcards, vintage photos of unknown people. And that's because.... like you..... I imagine their personal stories of life. I guess that is also why I do genealogy .... to find out the personal stories of my ancestors. And.... my favorite books to read are biographies. It is always about people's individual life stores that interest me in life. So what you are doing with your art at the moment really interests me. Question: How do you keep collaging, painting and sanding without losing all of the vintage ephemera..... i.e. that the viewer can no longer read even snippets of it? That has always been my problem when trying this....... I have always struggled with trying to figure out what kind of "painting/mixed media" that I want to do. Your video today resonates with me. Perhaps this is the clue to my art journey that I needed to hear. Thank you. I shall experiment and play with it.... Do you consider the painting at the end of this video to be finished? I love it just the way it is...... just wondering what this will look like when YOU consider it to be finished. I.e. how much of the ephemera will be readable?
@ThisPaintingLife
@ThisPaintingLife Год назад
Hi Susan, I find it hard to say when these are finished as it's all such a new process for me. But as for losing the ephemera, I just accept that will happen. If I start trying to control that, I'll get too precious and start trying to control the pieces and then they won't work. If I have pieces I really don't want to lose, I save them and add them to altered books or sketchbooks x
@SusanMJB45
@SusanMJB45 Год назад
@@ThisPaintingLife Thanks for your quick reply Louise !! I do understand that the layering process of collaging, painting, sanding, scraping back and then repeat will cover up a lot of the ephemera. And that's fine with me. But....I guess my question is, how much ephemera do you think/guess will be showing at the end of the process? Silly question by me as I know that you are doing this intuitively so you don't know the answer to my question...... LOL......... I love looking at walls out in the world that have had many many layers of posters, billboards, notes, paint etc over the years that have been torn off or left to weather in the rain, snow, heat over time. For myself, I find what you are doing to be reminiscent of that same process. Anyway.... I do understand that you are finding your way with these. I do hope that you will continue to post on RU-vid about where you go with these so that we can see the final product whenever you decide that they are "finished." Thanks !!!

Thank you Louise. I have had an inspiration about something for quite some time now, but have always "turned the page" on it because it seemed too sad. But your video made something click for me, so I have taken out my sketch book (which I drag around to so many places and never use) and have written down my idea as a way to give credence to an inspiration. I like to approach that utilizing the sketchbook doesn't have to involve anything fancy or involved. Less pressure! As an aside, is what you are doing with this method of all these layers, called "decollage"?

I loved this discussion about your use of ephemera collage intuitively within your work, especially the part when you said it doesn’t all have to come from you. The part I didn’t understand was when you said, you know it is commercial art. I’m wondering if you can touch on that somewhere within your newsletters or videos. Why did you consider the addition of ephemera as a commercial aspect? Or maybe I misinterpreted. Thank you so much!
