In today's video we disassemble an iPod Touch 5th Gen to replace it's charging port ribbon cable.

Great job John. Quite a fiddly fix on that iPod to be sure. If my iPod dies or has problems, I can see some travel in its future - LOL. Keep well my friend. Regards, Dave

Thanks Dave. Yes I'd fix a port etc for you, as long as the postage didn't cost more than the device :) Before I started doing these things I certainly wasn't expecting to be soldering 42 pad connectors down 😮. Take care friend John

Good job. I don’t use flux remover. The way it was clumping the glue makes me wonder if it’s oil based. I know for powder coating if you cook the vinyl when doing multiple coats to long the glue is hard to remove. Surprisingly Johnson & Johnson baby oil works well. It makes me wonder how a baby oil would work on glue like in the iPod touch? I would still use IPA to clean the oil off Incase it’s conductive. Makes me want to try it, lol.

Hi Scott, hope your doing ok mate. The flux cleaner I have Is Qualitek 381F. Not sure what it base makeup is really, but it works. Never tried baby oil as a cleaner mate so can't comment there :) Cheers John

Smashing job john :-D Im amazed how much space there is when the battery is removed, greedy battery :-D. A very stupid thought, would pre saturating the wick with flux make less mess on the pcb? Just enough to desolder, no need to drownd the pcb maybe? Yes it is a silly thought lol. I think you need a kickstand for the display, a cardboard one maybe? Ooow my mate used an i-pod, he walks, so i called it an I-Plod :)

Hi Harv, yes it's biggie ain't it. Pre-saturating the wick may work good mate, I dunno I never tried it. I just always add flux as the wick I have is always dried out so it needs watering :) And nooo..I like my bench cookies or dogs... Whatever they're called :D Cheers Harv John

John - the date code on the battery was 2012 unless I read it wrong...I guess LiO batteries last but if the owner wanted to continue to extend the life of the unit wouldn't it make sense to have installed a new battery while you were in there? Great job by the way, thanks for sharing!

Hi Dino, Yes you read it correctly & replacement was an option. I did ask the owner about how often the device was used & how it held it's charge etc, and they told me that it still lasted a good few days on a charge so this tells me that battery is still in reasonable order. There's no problem though as I can do the battery anytime if necessary, as it's not that hard to get at or replace. Cheers friend John

Hi friend, just a quick tip: If you use IPA on a spatula you can easily cut throw the battery glue. Great video once again, love your channel :) BTW where do you buy your low melt solder? Can you share?

I used to buy Chip Quick but now use Fast Chip. I get it here in the UK from... www.pcb-soldering.co.uk/fast-chip-removal-alloy-for-smd-rework-8-ft-lead-free.html
