(Copied from Google about Steve Finnan) - "He is the only player to have played in the World Cup, UEFA Champions League, UEFA Cup, Intertoto Cup, all four levels of the English league football and the Football Conference."
As a dutchman I still can't believe we didn't qualify for the 2002 world cup. We had such a quality squad back then yet somehow they managed to screw it up, like being 2-0 up against Portugal and then handing them a draw. So many chances in this game as well. Ireland fully deserved to qualify though. I remember being gutted when we lost but finding some solace in the fact that it was against the Irish who fully deserved a little payback for 88, 94 and 96. :D
Many star players missed these qualifier games. The best starting 11 of this dutch generation, including Bergkamp who retired from national team in 2000, would probably win the two previous world cups (18,22).
We were gutted at throwing away a 2-0 lead in the Netherlands . That said ,I thought you had such a talented team that would have graced any world cup. It is a shame that ourselves, yourselves and Figo's Portugal had to share a qualifying group!
This game was on the same day U2 played Slane Castle..We watched the game on the big screens before the gig. The place erupted when Mcateers goal went in.
I was there with my father and uncle. My uncle had got us tickets and asked us to come up to Dublin. Of course we jumped at the chance! When we arrived all in green, ebullient and singing to our hearts content, my uncle turns and says, "we'll be seated with the Dutch. These were the only tickets I could get. So ye may want tone it down." As you can imagine, it was quite awkward being amongst a sea of orange, doing our best not to cheer with too much enthusiasm, casually clapping in a sympathetic manner at their missed opportunities. But when Keane took that ball and passed it on, falling down, the rest can only be described as magic. Well, we jumped up and down, looking each other in the eyes in disbelief, screaming as the home side echoed our cries from the other side of the pitch. I was 11 and it was one of the most beautiful moments I've lived. The supporters around us shook our hands and congratulated us, which we couldn't believe and we nodded back apologetically and respectfully. That was Irish football. We haven't been in a world cup since.
My dad was with a few of his friends for THAT game against Germany in 2014. They were with Irish fans, but there were two free tickets as two of em couldn't go. They sold the tickets at sale price to two young German college students who'd been stiffed earlier in the day. To make it up to the two young fellas, dad bought them a pint each. 😂
I was in the terrace behind the goal that McAteer scored into. They had to install temporary seating for UEFA regulations and it was literally shaking for a good 5 minutes after! Limbs everywhere 😆
One of the great Irish victories. But we certainly rode our luck that day against a fantastic Dutch side. They probably [certainly?] deserved a goal for the amount of chances they created. Gary Kelly being sent off seems to have been lost in the midst of time. Makes the victory even more impressive. Great finish by McAteer. As another post mentioned it cancels out Wim Keift's dodgy winner in '88. In hindsight its a shame the Saipan scandal undid a lot of the good work in reaching the finals. We could gone a lot further if Mr Keane had stayed or returned!
A superb win over a great Dutch side, up there with the very best victories in Irish sport. But how the Dutch didn't score is a mystery, they totally dominated the game and the Irish were blessed to win that day
It happens in soccer. Lady luck is with the under dog. In central America that year Honduras Rose to the ranks in hit the woodwork 7 times against Trinidad and Tobago and it was important. They didn't qualify. So not only the Dutch but Honduras as well.
I was in Amsterdam for this game. My main memory is of a very drunk group of lads from Belfast. One of them kept insisting I was Jason McAteer (I've been told there's a resemblance!)....the fact that McAteer was playing on live tv hundreds of km's away didn't sway him! That was a serious Dutch team! I don't remember us having a player sent off or being so jammy! Selective memory for you! Some achievement to qualify out of that group- McCarthy never got the credit he deserved in my opinion.
Here because of the Ireland Holland game tonight. Its still a shame that my country didnt qualify for the wc 2002 back then (im Dutch), especially considering the top teams that WC weren’t impressive. Looking at the chances this game, lady luck was with Ireland that day. Although, I remember a good playing Irish side should ve won in Amsterdam, where we were struggling with the retirement of Bergkamp and the disappointment of the Euros. Plus: I always liked the Irish national side and their fans because of their passion for the game. Good luck tonight!
I was at the second U2 concert in Slane that day and when Jayo scored the crowd went mental, then Tim Wheeler took the stage and said"who's goin to Japan" then sang Girl from Mars... it was incredible...
That's awesome. Didn't know Ash opened for U2 at that show. Bono makes a reference to McAteer's goal when performing 'Beautiful Day' - he changes the lyrics at the end to "beautiful....goal!" (Look up the clip on RU-vid.)
We didn’t qualify for the World Cup finals that day. We had to play Iran in a two-legged play-Off. We won the home leg 2:0 but lost the away leg 1:0 and were lucky we didn’t concede a second but for a brilliant save by Given. Roy Keane didn’t go to Iran and I think that was the start of the falling out with McCarthy.
Just remember Given having a great game and Macca scored just being totally euphoric. Fantastic squad of players and shame we didn't go further in the world cup
@@Celestialspirit1 because ireland bet them that's why. Shows how good ireland were. Imagine rot Keane in his prime in 2010? He'd walk all over teams with their primadonnas
u2 played a second gig at Slane Castle on the same day. 2 things i'll never forget, Keane's performance, and trying not to spill my beer over the new carpet at my friend's parents house when McAteer scored.
How the hell did Holland lose with that team de ja vu Holland remember euro 2000 against Italy against ten men miss two penalties and missed three in the shoutout 5 pens missed that's fucking piss poor! Shame because this Dutch was the nuts!
Hi I have just subscribed to your channel thanks for uploading the video what a day that was a memory that will stay with me forever. What a team we had brink back Mick.
WC 02 was the tournament where all big football nations were eliminated preliminary. Netherlands already in the qualification, Argentina & France in the group stage, Italy in 2nd round,...
3:19 Reminds me of Graham Taylor in 1993 berating the FIFA officials in Rotterdam over a penalty his side didn't get in a critical World Cup qualifier against... who was it again... oh yes. Holland!
Fair play Ireland, beat a decent Holland team there. They had 4 quality CF's on the pitch at one point 😂 always good to see Ireland at major tournaments, even with the stick they give us English 😂
Its a shame Netherlands didnt qualify to the 2002 World Cup. Wouldve been one of the favorites. But its also crazy the star players that missed both games against Ireland during the qualifiers. They never had them all available. And Bergkamp retiring early from the national team in 2000 was a big hit.
He was great at PSV, in a team that once included Ronaldo, Luc Nilis, and I'm sure others. Having the shine of playing well in a team that included Brazilian Ronaldo is a thing that is brilliant pr.
He would have walked these days. Although Staunton's feeble attempt @ a back pass header was ridiculous. Nice to see it trickle just past the post though. At the end the Dutch had a front 3 of Hasselbaink/Kluivert/Van Nistelrooy ffs! The ball was never gonna go in for them that day. They could have had Cruyff & Guillit supplying the ammo or Van Basten alongside the other 3 upfront and it wouldnt have made the slightest bit of difference!!! ;)
God it still feels painful to watch this. That team we had back then dominated possession in many games but was woeful when it came to finishing. This game felt like the semi against Italy in 2000. Internally there were issues between Van Gaal's discipline and the experienced players, but even then we were so unlucky and also should've won Portugal away, but Figo dived at the last moment and they got a penalty!!! Just dreadful to think back on it, even now!!!
Lost it coz of the interview van gaal gave day before.. Arrogance lost that game for the Dutch.. I never forget that interview he gave.. And i think the Irish players watched that interview too..
The Dutch knocked Ireland out of 3 different tournaments. On this occasion it was the Irish knocking the Dutch out. From a neutral point of view Holland did not deserve to lose. You could argue though that the Irish work rate and defensive discipline deserved something from this game.
Mighty effort from an oustanding Irish group. That said, the Dutch national football team are such perennial bottlers; laughing stock of the game, results-wise.
How could the Dutch lose this game against 11 men, later only 10 men who stumbled around like headless chicken? They wasted their chances in dumbest ways. On this day was born a song in Germany "Without the Netherlands we're going to the World Cup"
That's a bit harsh. Ireland did not lose any of their group games. Their group included Portugal and Holland, 2 of the semi-finalists from the 2000 Euros. Ireland defended really well in this game and Roy Keane in midfield was world class.
I LOVE SARAH AND 14 hehe- It's funny because we did own that play-off at Anfield - we played a fantastic game that night, totally controlled the game.....then when we got to the finals themselves we were absolutely useless.
Funny thing was that Ireland actually played much better in the game in Amsterdam earlier in the qualification campaign but didn't win. Lost a two goal lead in the last twenty minutes if memory serves.
People forget just how shite Gary Kelly was in that game. He was so bad that Ireland played much better after he was red carded. We might have won 2-0 had Steve Staunton been sent off as well.
Big loss for world cup that Netherland failed to qualify . Sad days repeat when no qualifying to Russia 2018. How does it come. Never stand this . Without the oranges. World Cup will lose alot of its beauty.
Have you seen the Oranje the last 2 World Cups? They haven't been playing beautiful "Total Football." The diving antics of Arjen Robben won't be missed.
HOW IN THE NAME OF GOD AND HOLY HELL IRELAND WON THIS GAME IS BEYOND ME, I MEAN ABSOLUTELY BEYOND ME, HOLLAND WERE ROBBED OF A PENALTY, IF THE DUTCH WON THIS GAME 6 NIL IRELAND COULD HAVE NO COMPLAINTS WHATSOEVER, BUT THATS FOOTBALL I SUPPOSE!!!
You played against 10 men for 35 minutes and still lost so you threw away the advantage you did get. The Dutch were lucky to get a 2-2 draw with Ireland in the 1st game. The 2nd goal was a deflection. The Dutch only took 2 points out of 12 against the Irish and the Portuguese. They weren't good enough to qualify.
We know how to celebrate and enjoy life here in Ireland. And most people like to come to visit us to experience this unique atmosphere. And FYI we are a different nation to the English. Is mise Eire.
