As a Springbok fan, I gotta say that this is pure art, intense stuff, rugby at its best and one of the most frightening sights to see as an opposition fan.

Great reaction this time lad. This was a great time for Ireland, we were the 2nd best team in the world at this time (possibly even went 1st at some stage if memory serves). It's not like we are some plucky wee team, but the fact that it's always a big deal to beat the All Blacks (whether you are England, Australia, South Africa or anybody else) combined with the fact that we hadn't beat them in over century added a different dimension to this win. We beat them again in 2018 in Ireland too (this was in Chicago as you noticed).

I must be honest, the Ireland World Cup saga is way better... and funnier. For context, Ireland are considered to be one of the better teams in rugby but in 9 Rugby World Cups since 1987 have never made it past the quarter finals. Being knocked out 7 times in the Quarter finals. Its a genuine curse.

It’s definitely a rivalry now because Ireland have closed the gap they are a World class team. New Zealand won the game a week later in Ireland. It was brutal with a lot of controversy.

The 2021 6 Nations Scotland vs France is a classic. According to BBC Sport "France will snatch the title away from Wales should they score at least four tries and win by 21 points or more. But a Scottish victory by at least eight, while denying France a bonus point, would earn the visitors a best-ever finish of second place." It's a 3-way win potential. I won't spoil the result, but the match is epic and nailbiting.

Loving your reactions. Being a passionate kiwi I'm biased with what are great games to watch but here are some suggestions: 2015 World cup All Black 1/4 final vs France, semi final vs South Africa and final against Australia. All Blacks vs Australia in 2000, considered by many as the best game of all time. 1995 world cup final South Africa vs All Blacks.

This fixture actually did turn into a bit of a mini rivalry during the 2010s. Three more games would be played. A week later after the match in Chicago they played again in Dublin, the All Blacks winning that by ten or so points. They would play in Dublin again in 2018 when the two teams were considered the best in the world which Ireland won by 7 points. They would meet again in the World Cup quarter finals a year later in 2019 which was a year that saw Ireland massively dip in form. The All Blacks destroyed Ireland in that quarter final leaving the record 3-2 to the All Blacks during Irelands Joe Schmidt (Irish coach 2013-2019) era.

Simple physics will mean if you are running and passing at the same time the ball can appear to passed backwards to the naked eye, yet it could be caught by the recipient in front of or in line with the passer. In Rugby the ball has to travel forward.
@henhicktaimon
@henhicktaimon 2 года назад
yeah that's why the rule is forward out of the hand, that drift forward you're talking about from them being full sprint is ok as long as you're releasing it backwards
@dcbbot
@dcbbot 2 года назад
If you're running forward and you pass directly perpendicular to yourself, the momentum will carry the ball forward even if it is going 'lateral', so the direction of the ball matters, not the position this si often determined by the hands. If you're in a pile up over the try line and the ref can't determine if a try has been scored a 5 metre scrum is awarded.

International teams are built in 4 year cycles (basically to peak in a World Cup year). The Soldier Field game was 1 year after the 2015 World Cup which New Zealand Won and this was year one of building a team for the 2019 World Cup. Ireland had got their cycle wrong and peaked before the World Cup. At this point Ireland were a better team than NZ and were in much better form. This is also basically at the end of Southern Hemisphere team's season and about a quarter way in to Northern Hemisphere team's season. It's tradition for the Southern nations to tour Europe in November and this is usually when the Northern teams beat them.
@rocketrabble6737
@rocketrabble6737 2 года назад
Teams often peak too soon in the 4-year cycle including the All Blacks who in their barren period were often the top-ranked side between World Cups but blew up in the latter stages of the finals.

Under a NZ coach Ireland had a couple of years where they were the best they had ever been in their history. In 2016 NZ had just come off a RWC win in 2015. As a result they had a number of experienced players retire who were GOATS in their positions . The game was not played in NZ or Ireland but in Chicago not a rugby town which played to Irelands favour in that they sort of snuck uip on the ABS :While both teams were there the Chicago cubs won the World series their first in 108 years. Irelands win was their first win against the ABs in 111 years. Coincidence . I think not!

If I my add...... As much as I admire these teams and there wounderful suporters who love this fantastic game, world rugby is a lot more than New Zealand, South Africa and England. There are other teams like Australia and France that dont get the credit they deserve. My opinion is when France are on form there is not a team that can match them. Also huge respect to Australia were rugby union is not there national sport but can beat any side on there day. I myself am Welsh and rugby is imbedded in our culture. Like the Welsh there are other teams .... Ireland, Scotland, Argentina and now Japan who are over looked when it comes to RU-vid reaction...... we all play some great rugby. I just wanted to paint a more accurate picture of this amazing sport to give you a better understanding of Rugby Union.

None of the following is to take anything away from a stellar Irish performance but for context with the All Blacks in 2016, they won every other game that year (most comfortably). However, at this point in the season they had real personnel issues in the Second Row (4 & 5). The first choice pair of Brodie Retallick and Sam Whitelock, 2 of the best locks to ever play the game, were out injured and their 3rd choice at the time, Luke Romano, was on compassionate leave following the death of his mother. Starting in the 2nd row for this game was Patrick Tuipolotu, a less experienced international at the time, and Jerome Kaino who was the first choice Blindside flanker/6 that rarely plays second row (I don't think he had internationally ever, or since). Not only did you have Kaino playing an unfamiliar role, it also meant they weren't playing their first choice blindside in position either. Meanwhile, as a replacement was Scott Barrett, brother of fellow All Blacks Beauden and Jordie, who made his debut coming off the bench in this game. Now, nobody gave a bad account of themselves but the situation gave Ireland a marginal edge in certain key areas; lineout (second rows are the usual jumpers although Kaino was a regular jumper when playing 6 anyway), scrum (the weight of second rows coming through onto the Front Row is really crucial for stability), maul defence (we saw Ireland score/set up tries through this facet of play) and general grunt work (clearing rucks, making tackles, making small carries to recycle ball). This alone would not have won Ireland the game had they not executed their game plan to near perfection and it is one of Ireland's greatest ever performances.
@rittherugger160

"What was the penalty?" You weren't listening. Nigel, the ref, clearly stated "In off your feet." When entering a ruck you must attempt to stay on you feet. Going down intentionally, especially beyond the ball, is a penalty. This is one of my pet peeves with the current game. Too many people going off their feet in rucks. It used to be going down or forcing someone down whether intentional or not was penalized.... often. When everyone is on their feet the competition for possession is more fluid. The "problem" with fluidity at rucks is that people not on their feet tend to get stepped on. Being stepped on in the 70s and 80s was a simple fact of life. Law requires that if you are in a tackle you must either get up, move away, or both. If you were stepped on it was because you were where you weren't supposed to be. Actually, if your team were going forward, winning the rucks, they were the ones stepping on you. There is a huge difference between stepping on and STOMPING on. "Oh wait! Did they think they had the ball?" Nah. He's a smart lad. He can count. He sees the ABs have 4 guys over there and the Irish have only 2. That was a cry for help. The 'powers that be' have decided that players today are so much faster than they used to be that the forward velocity of their speed will cause the ball to travel forward despite the fact that it was released in a non-forward manner. It used to be a simple question of whether or not the ball WENT forward now you are supposed to decide what the passer was doing with his/her fingertips.
@Dreyno
@Dreyno 2 года назад
Except he that’s not what happened. NZ tackler puts himself on the wrong side preventing the ball from coming back on the Irish side and then No. 18 black pulls out of the ruck as the clear out came in putting the Irish player off his feet. There was a clear penalty as soon as the tackler came down on the wrong side and made a pathetic attempt to get out. The “off his feet” call was after the initial offence and should’ve been immaterial.
@rittherugger160

@@Dreyno If you are not over extended when the opposition backs out you wouldn't fall down. You would drive them away and the ball would naturally come out behind you.
@Dreyno

@@rittherugger160 Yes. But the main point is the offence wouldn’t have counted if the clear and obvious offence before that had been penalised. If the NZ player wasn’t lying on the wrong side, the ball carrier could’ve placed it immediately, the scrum half would’ve had the ball and the clear out wouldn’t have happened. The first offence is always penalised unless there’s serious foul play.
@rittherugger160
@rittherugger160 2 года назад
@@Dreyno Someone lying somewhere does not prevent the release of the ball. It might prevent you from putting it exactly where you want but nowhere does the law say that you must be allowed to place it exactly where and how you want. You say that the act that wasn't penalized caused the act that was penalized. Are you sure that the act that wasn't penalized should have been? Evidently the ref disagrees with you.
@Dreyno
@Dreyno 2 года назад
@@rittherugger160 Falling on the opposition side after a tackle and causing any impediment is a penalty every time. Even if you accidentally find yourself there, it’s a penalty. The only times it’s not is when the opposition are clearly pinning you in to buy a penalty or the ball makes it’s way out immediately. He put himself there, he made no real effort to get out of the way and the ball didn’t come out. There wasn’t even a serious attempt to hackle the ball from the ruck. He was the obstruction and the call was wrong. That was a textbook penalty. Even Nigel can get it wrong.

The ref mostly asks the Video ref if there is any reason for him to not award the try (in the situation the ref thinks a try has been scored) and the opposite if he thinks there is no try. He will often check grounding of the ball, if the player stayed in touch, or if a tackle was high and foul play.
