Iridium and El Capistan in Stereo - EASY!

If you're unfamiliar with the Strymon El Capistan (delay pedal) and Iridium (amp and cab simulator) you're about to be pleasantly surprised.
Strymon recently re-released a number of their small box pedals (El Capistan included). They included a number of great upgrades, midi control being one of my favourites. They did not, however, change the TRS input jack.
If you're wanting to run the El Cap and/or Iridium in stereo, you need to know a couple of key but simple points.
1. You need a TRS to Dual Mono cable aka. Insert Cable
2. The pedal needs to be set to send and receive stereo.

Keep reading that the el cap doesnt maintain stereo image on wet signal ouput. Having internal jumper set to stereo position and using y cable to trs jack on the input of the el cap, the el cap maintains left and right on the dry signals being input... However, the wet signal is summed and sent to the outputs of both channels.Not tried it yet but this would be a big problem to me due to my use (live pa not guitar) and routing. I need to input two seperate channels that are processed separately and then output to two seperate channels independently.ie left and right seperation maintained from dry through to wet.Can anyone confirm that it is true that the el cap wet signal is sent to both channels rather than seperate left and right being maintained? Basically it seems the wet signal is summed to mono, then split to "stereo". The L & R dry signals remain discrete. If this is true it makes this video void....no stereo signal is maintained. Left and right channels are outputting the same wet signal. Its two channels in, processed signals then summed, then sent to both left and right outs. This means same wet signal on both outputs. I dont want summing of wet signal! Its sold as a delay capable of stereo not pseudo stereo/ dual mono output...not happy! Its not stereo at all. The mix knob sends wet signal to both outputs.

This was the video I was looking for🙌. If I ran the stereo effects after the iridium and into my interface to record, would I still switch the iridium to stereo?

totally up to you at that point. Iridium doesn't do a whole lot for a stereo signal in and of itself... so I have a feeling youd be hard pressed to notice a difference.

If I have my pedals wired stereo with the insert cable into the iridium with the switch flipped to stereo and only run the left out of the iridium, what does that change compared to wiring everything in mono then flipping the switch to mono?

Looks like I'm going back to testing! I have no idea. On a typical pedal it would sum (just like you're alluding to) but not sure if there's a difference between what you just said as far as the Iridium (or the v2 line up from Strymon). About to film a vid this week with another V2... I'll add this to my list of questions to answer! well played

Hey mate! I have a question - where abouts should I place the stereo TC Mimiq pedal? I run Into a boss es5 THEN split stereo into Strymons and a few other stereo pedals but I've been told it should be the FIRST thing my guitar sees? I'm really confused about this. Please help! Lol

I would place it directly after the ES-5 and use it as the split going to your stereo wet pedals.

@@Sperzel That was my original thought but then I watched a Petrucci rig tour (his most recent one) and he has his in the back of his rack but swears it has to be the first thing your guitar should hit so that's where my confusion has come from. I run out of my ES5 in the Line6 HX stomp stereo out to the Keeley Halo - Strymon Bigsky - Earthquaker Avalanche run then to Powerstage 700 & Cabs.

@@jaysonhulbert1525 Yeah I’ve seen that as well but I don’t agree. The TC manual even recommends placing it after gain pedals. But it might be worth experimenting with to see what you like best.

... so does is the tip the left and the ring the right? What do you mean "maybe" the left or right? I can't find info anywhere and dunno if it even matters.

it really depends how you plug in the pedal that comes before the El Cap. If you plug in the dual mono end attached to RING into the right output of the previous pedal, then ring will take the right out and send to the right out of the El Cap. But yes, the ring on el cap in sends to right out of El Cap. But honestly, in most cases, this really doesn't matter if you're running a standard series pedalboard and are just wanting stereo.
