Irish Bouzouki - Catharsis

Here's one of my favourite tunes, now played on my shiny new Joe Foley bouzouki, along with mistress Suzanne on the bodhrán. "Catharsis" was composed by New England fiddler Amy Cann, originally in G minor, but since that stretches my fingers way too far, I moved it up to C minor. I also made a jig out of it the first few times round, because I can.
Enjoy!

Wow, this is amazing! In addition to the fantastic bouzouki playing, the bodhran player is incredible!!!

Super bodhran playing. I recognize how difficult it can be to play at slower tempos like the jig at the start. Really nice strong upstrokes too. Wonderfully tasteful tonal control that negates the need for fancy stick-work. One of my favourite bodhran players.

Thanks, this is one of my favorite dance tunes, and The Queen of Argyle is my favorite Silly Wizard tune (thanks for that as well). I think you would be good with Greasy Coat, please.

Whoa, great transition from jig to reel, and just wonderful playing overall. So, you're playing it in A minor and capoing up to C minor?

Thanks! I play it in Gm, capoing up to CM (5th fret). Gm allows me to drone the open G string.

You should really release your name to the public. Why the secrecy? You have great career potential. And your percussion player is awesome.

Would playing a mandola instead of a bouzouki with a capo be the same?

Dude, your pickguard is on the wrong side of the soundhole.
@TijnB42
@TijnB42 6 лет назад
Rickard Brinck The pickguard is there to prevent the top from being damaged by your picking. Where it needs to be placed depends on one's style of playing. For me (and most other people in the world) that's below the soundhole.
@rickardbrinck2886
@rickardbrinck2886 6 лет назад
Haha, honestly I was mostly referring to the fact that you had it the other way around on the Fylde 'zouk. How come you changed your mind?
@TijnB42
@TijnB42 6 лет назад
My playing style has changed somewhat over the past few years. I installed a pickguard on the upside of the Fylde a few years ago because back then I was playing really heavy, percussive-style on the bass strings, leading to scratches on the top above them. These days I'm doing more with the high strings (doing the percussive effects with a combination of left-hand and right-hand damping) so I installed another pickguard on the bottom side. The instrument in this vid is one I bought second-hand with the pickguard already installed and I haven't felt the need to change it.
