Irish bouzouki - The Unwilling Sparrow

Last week I went on a trip to Donegal, where I bought this lovely second-hand 1978 Joe Foley bouzouki. Relative to my Fylde, this one's got a smaller body and bigger soundhole, giving it less bass and sustain and more punch in the high end - perfect for tunes!
The first tune is one I wrote myself, a jig called the Unwilling Sparrow. The second one is a traditional tune called I Buried My Wife and Danced on Her Grave, and the third one is called Jim Ward's.
Enjoy!
P.S. Many thanks to Suzanne for filming me.
NEW: The Unwilling Sparrow, and fifty-four other tunes I wrote over the past few years, is part of my new tune book, which is available from my website www.tijnberends.com

This is lovely. Thanks so much for sharing. I’ll be listening over and over. And, yes, tablature would be a real gift.

I've met Joe Foley, he's good folks. Had the honor of playing a brand new guitar he'd made - the lacquer was barely dry! It was amazing. Really nice job on the tune, just lovely!

Love your playing; you never sound 'rushed', always bang in the pocket and clean. And the Foley sounds great for tunes, very punchy.

So basically the big soundhole gives more punch in the high end? Nice first tune, nice composition :)
@TijnB42
@TijnB42 6 лет назад
A bigger soundhole means vibrational energy from a plucked string is more quickly transferred to the surrounding air, meaning you have less sustain - and, because of simple conservation of energy, more volume during that shorter sounding time. The difference in low versus high end is mainly due to body size - generally speaking, a bigger body gives more power the lower frequencies. The small body of this zouk doesn't allow much of that low end, leaving more energy for the high frequencies. Combined with the shorter sustain, it makes it sound more "punchy".

Hi, Big fan of your work. I'm starting Bouzouki this year, (since January actually). do you have some advice (web lesson or dedicated website ?) ftr i'm a middle class guitarist (actually drummer and i play Bodhran too) Thanks and Keep sending good vibes
@TijnB42
@TijnB42 6 лет назад
Heya, glad you liked it! Like you, I already played the guitar (a bit) when I picked up the bouzouki. I never followed any lessons, but I listened to as many different players as possible. The older albums by Planxty and Dervish are a great place to start. Try to emulate first, then apply the same playing to different tunes or songs, see what works. Experiment to see what different kinds of sounds you can get out of the instrument and what you can use them for. And practise. For any new trick you want to pick up, it will take several dozen hours of doing just that thing for your fingers to get used to it. Good luck!

The notes really cut through compared to the Fylde........the Fylde is sweet sounding though. Both have their strengths! Seems like it's more comfortable you to hold?

Hello, I allow myself to ask you what harmonica do you use on your video where you play "autumn child". An answer evoked a Seytel D .. Apparently it does not work ... You play in a more serious register can you enlighten me please? cordially please i need a answer is for my dad.
@TijnB42
@TijnB42 6 лет назад
Heya, I'm assuming the "serious register" you got with Google Translate means a lower one. Correct, the harmonica I play in that video is a Seydel Session Steel in low D solo tuning - although a regular low D would work as well.
