Irish bouzouki - The Bucks of Oranmore

It's been a while since I recorded a nice tune on the bouzouki, so here's one to fix that. The Bucks of Oranmore, or simply The Bucks, is a pretty well-known tune, usually played very fast near the end of a session. I rather like it more laid-back though, making it sound really sweet and gentle. And in F, just because I can.
For those who are interested, the bouzouki is a Fylde longscale archtop in G,DAd. Backing is played by me on a Martin guitar in DADGAD.

I can't tell you how many times I've returned to sit and listen to this tune of yours - the best rendition of bucks I've ever heard! Thank you for being an inspiration, and thanks for your amazing playing!!!

For engineers only. Feast your eyes on his fast repositioning of left hand. That’s a perfect human closed loop servo. No oscillation, fast, accurate and great position damping. In moves that must be near foot along neck. His brain must be working with at least second derivative of position , maybe third.

Footnote: According to Francis O'Neill, a famous pre-civil war blind piper named Patrick Flannery was, in 1855, playing the "Bucks of Oranmore" on the streets of Brooklyn in front of a fascinated audience when "the summons to eternity" came. Can't think of a happier tune to be playing, or a better way for a musician to bid adieu :)

Perfect pace, the beauties of too many tunes get left behind at the hectic pace of many sessions IMHO. Great use of drones and cross picking technique here. Thumbs Up from Catalunya

First of all gotta say love your music especially queen of argyll and autumn child. second thanks for opening my mind up to the bouzouki, i actually decided i was gonna learn to play piano, but the bouzouki honestly speaks to me more sound wise. Thirdly how would you recommend going about learning the bouzouki for a complete music noob i found a cheap ozark that im gonna order once my paycheck comes, but im having alot of difficulty finding instructional material. Anyway keep up the good work and stay frosty :D
@TijnB42
@TijnB42 6 лет назад
Thanks! I must admit I don't know much about instruction material - I'm entirely self-taught. I've heard some good things about the Online Academy of Irish Music (www.oaim.ie), where the bouzouki is one of the instruments they offer lessons for. Other than that, it's much the same as with any instrument - listen to as many different good players as you can, start with trying to imitate and once you can do that, try to play variations and see what works.
@TheMinimunk

TijnB42 Thanks alot 🙂 so keep doing What i am Allrdy doing Roger that Except for the imitation part need the instrument for that 😂

@TijnB42
@TijnB42 5 лет назад
Thanks! I never use tabs, too much bother when switching between instruments or tuning. I learn by ear or from sheet music, most tunes can be found on thesession.org.

@TijnB42
@TijnB42 6 лет назад
Thanks! I use a pair of Rode NT1-A mics. I found out that, especially for string instruments, recording in stereo adds a whole lot of clarity to the sound.
@erosfaulk2816
@erosfaulk2816 6 лет назад
Nice. I've looked into the NT1-A and it's definitely a mic I'd like to get in the future. And yes, stereo adds a whole lot more!

Nicely done ! "and in F just because I can"... It means that the scale length of your longscale bouzouki is too long for a playing in D at 0 fret ? Sometimes, are "itchy fingers" not enough, with your Fylde ? Anyway, I congratulate you !
@TijnB42
@TijnB42 6 лет назад
Thanks! I can play it in D without a capo fine enough, I just like to do different keys every now and then. Variety, spice of life, etc.

Tuning?
@ziblot1235
@ziblot1235 5 лет назад
Are you sure the guitar was DADGAD? I guess you are. haha You played the song. But why? I would have tuned the Martin to DADF#AD. Then you have a perfect D. Just a thought. Never mnd, you sounded great. I play mando lin and guitar, but I think I would like to switch to Bouziki because my hands are not as "bendy" as they once were. The larger fingerboard appeals to me.
