Inspired by the Golden globe winning film ; The Banshees of Inisherin, this video is a short study of the type of Irish cottage that exists in great numbers in the Irish countryside today. Within ten minutes of where I live, I found at least twelve cottages standing mostly in ruin. Many are now used to house livestock for farmers and while some brave people have restored many of them, the general trend has been to demolish and rebuild a modern bungalow or simply leave them melt back into the landscape.
Greetings from Ireland! Welcome to my channel, that is dedicated to the history and culture of Ireland.This is not set out to be a history lesson, but a ramble through some stories you might find interesting about Ireland from an Irishman! Ireland has so many connections throughout the world from the emigration from this country over so many centuries, but those with Irish blood in their families always have a yearning to know more about thier "old country", this is my attempt to bring some of the history and culture they left behind. So if you fancy some tales about horsemen and highwaymen, banshee's and fairies, soldiers and rebels, legends and folklore, saints and scholars, please like and subscribe, I post once per month. Thank you for watching. Ronan.

I have seen lots of those types of empty cottages while fishing around ireland . I did wonder as to why they were empty . The black plastic damp course that is used at floor level nowadays probably helps alot solving the musty conditions that existed back then . The ruins are probably making good homes for foxes ,birds and hedgehogs and other life . I watched the banshees of inisherin the other day . It kept me going until the end . I suspect the beer that they were drinking in the pub was bishops finger lol. I can never work out what is real and what is not in ireland as it could be all a faery stray . Thanks primal ireland !

I enjoyed The Banshees of Inisherin. Plenty of Irish roots were planted here in the Ottawa Valley. Even the Rideau canal was built by Irishman.

Great to see you uploading again I really enjoy your videos excellent productions. I've recently done a thatching course near Kilmore Quay in wexford it was only a 4 day course but It gave me great insight into the work and skill that went into old cottages I would highly recommend it to anyone interested in vernacular architecture.

Thanks very much, it is sad to see these old cottages fall, well done on the thatching, I read somewhere that the straw was once much longer but the ag-scientists bred shorter shafts on cereals to aid the functioning of combined harvesters!
@danbreen1916
@danbreen1916 Год назад
Yes its true the yield used to be a lot lower the straw was tougher as well the thatcher said modern straw wouldn't soak "piss off a bulls arse " he says its really brittle and short a special old school longstraw variety is grown especially for the thatching it has to be harvested using an old reaper and binder I think modern combines crushes the stems too much . Thanks again for the uploads great stuff ! 👍

What do you reckon might an early medieval Irish settlement have looked like? I'm aware that cities only really appeared when the vikings came, but there must have been some form of population hubs to accommodate the relatively large population of medieval Ireland. Great video !

You are correct about the vikings but cities might be a stretch! It was thought that the monasteries were the first real urban centres before the vikings and thanks for the compliment.

@@primalireland-histcult Ah you're right I forgot about settlements around monasteries. Thanks.
