their music will resonate for generations to come. im convinced that our era, that is the 60s-90s produced the very best music in whatever genre. Singers and musicians have the greats as examples. I only hope they can match or exceed the legendary singers and players of our times.

I caught them at the Von Braun Center in Huntsville, AL back in '87. Classic lineup. I knew Erik Braunn was a fantastically innovative guitarist, but seeing them live was a real eye-opener. Braunn did several things on stage that I always assumed were some sort of studio-added effects. Nope. Like the vocal chorus at the end of Flowers and Beads - he did that with his guitar. I got to meet Doug Ingle after the show. A nice, gracious fellow.

Belda Beast is another psychedelic classic which never gets any airplay (or seldom got any airplay in its day, either).

I got to talk to Lee Dorman after a Captain Beyond gig. When I asked why they didn't tour more, he said that their management wasn't doing a very good job. I told him that they have many more fans than they realize. Both Iron butterfly and Captain beyond were great bands.

Saw them in Spokane washington ...i was 15/16 one of the best concerts i saw ..it was right at the same time Ball was released.

Jerry Penrod played bass on Unconscious Power (from Heavy). Lee Dorman joined Iron Butterfly after Penrod left with Danny Weis for Rhinoceros.

Yes, Erik. Danny Weis left after first album "Heavy". Lee Dorman was a fantastic bass player, but he did not play on the first album. That honor goes to Jerry Penrod.

I saw the Braun-Bushy-Dorman-Ingle line-up on April 20, 1988 at the Bayou in Wash. D.C., when Ahmet Ertegun put them out on tour for 20th anniversary of Atlantic Records. I was dumbfounded at the note-for-note renditions of their songs from late 60's. Lee Dorman played a blonde Fender P-Bass, Doug on Hammond B-3, and Erik Braun played through a 50W Marshall. I heard a lot of patrons around me making the same comment, "the band sounds like they're playing off CD". The quality was that good. I went on balcony floor and looked down on Doug Ingle's playing of Termination, Flower and Beads, and other songs. Very special and he was great. Lee Dorman's bass playing was fantastic. He was a very underrated player in my book. And Erik Braun, the guy could flat out play and duplicated all the elephant roars on his guitar when they played In-a-gadda-da-vida. A priceless memory to see that I.B. line-up.

Charles Wilson This record was/is so hip & imaginative in a time when many records were at least trying for that. Lee Dorman was way overlooked when it came time to give credit to the great Bass Players!

+Gary Oldroyd Dorman helped make the first Captain Beyond album the masterpiece that it was. There is some live captures of CB with Dorman on youtube, check them out.

@@martianshoes Indeed he did, I saw them Live in 92' at Sebastian Beach Inn, Melbourne FL, and Brought Sufficiently Breathless to have it Autographed, Lee Dorman actually said, "Damn, I forgot about That"... Autographed it and Bought my Drinks for the night, Great guys Lee and Ron Bushy, Unfortunately they were without Erik Braunn and Doug Ingle on that tour

I saw them at Under the Rail in Seattle in the late 90's... awesome ! The opening act was this Viking thing and the drummer who was using Rons gear, spun the crash cymbal and squirted lighter fluid on it and set it ablaze... needless to say Ron was not amused...

I always thought Erik was one of the most overlooked of the guitar greats. He was very creative and imaginative. The music has long since been corrupted and light like his can barely shine through.

Erik Brann gone in 2003 from a congenital heart condition.

And Ron Bushy is now gone. Doug Ingle is the last of the best lineup left. Danny Weis is still doing well, and he played the Mosrite magnificently on the first album before Eric Brann came on the scene.

Edgardo Bier: I believe Dorman switched to a Fender bass when he joined Captain Beyond.

Actually, he probably switched to a Fender when they added Rhino and Mike Pinera to IB and did Metamorphosis in 1970, and then continued with it in Captain Beyond.

Could have been the Red Skelton Hour. I think the show had IB play IAGDV (short version) and perhaps Soul Experience. The Skelton shows now released have edited Soul Experience out so more stinking commercials can be crammed down the viewers' throats.

Word is Eric Braun chose to leave due to the poor affects the traveling and hectic, stressful schedule had on his health. Some say he wanted a heavier sound as well, although after he left the band certainly got the heavier blues sound (which turned out to be too heavy for Doug Ingle). Braun had an ulcer by age 19, and he was born with a congenital heart problem--and he was having health problems while still with the band. No wonder he passed away at age 52.

Mosrite. I believe the band had an endorsement deal with Semie Moseley. Erik Brann played a Mosrite guitar as well.

Cindy Cassaro The earliest I was aware of Iron Butterfly was the Heavy album (1967?)--don't remember who played lead guitar then; Erik Brann played lead on the In-a-Gadda-daVida album and Ball.
