Ya exactly; the tag lines says that “even if you obsess”, while I don’t obsess, I’d say that I’m a little more than a casual fan, but even I knew 8 out of 10 of these. (Not sure I recall the drum puppet story or the actual name of the 666 quoter) If you’ve just watched any 1 of the 100s of documentaries, it’s pretty common knowledge. It really should be titled, “any real fan”, or maybe even the “general metal fan should know”.

Also, the first album cover was titled "Electric Matthew Says Hello" and was painted independently of the album. Derek noted that the band liked the image but asked him to add more hair so it would look less punk, which he did. Riggs' signature at the time, a stylized 'DR' appears on a brick behind the figure and had first appeared only recently on the cover of Budgie's 'Nightflight' album, which features a similar yellow and greenish color scheme. Riggs stopped painting Eddies after No Prayer For The Dying as he said he was just burnt out from it, though the spectral Eddie on the Brave New World album is his. The city below was added after Riggs walked away from the unfinished painting due to a dispute as to how to render the lower half, which was completed by Steve Stone. The cover of "Run For Cover: The Art Of Derek Riggs" by Martin Popoff (the source for my information) was painted by RIggs and has not been used by the band. Derek Riggs continues to work as an illustrator, usually in digital media.

@@Al_Bundy_1966 Maybe so. I have the Martin Popoff book but it's been a while since I read it. I remember that he got fed up with drawing Eddies and with Maiden's management, and that he ended up taking time off at some point because the years of working with the paints had basically poisoned him. You're probably right though. Haven't liked any of the Eddies done since he stopped either.

Blaze was a fine singer. Sadly, he was handed an impossible task, replacing Bruce. I mean sometimes replacing a singer works, Dio replacing Ozzy, and Brian Johnson replacing Bon Scott(RIP), or Hagar replacing Lee Roth, but those guys where legendary singers in their own rights. But I think the difference is, people where not angry at AC/DC, Sabbath, Van Halen Ozzy or Dio or Lee Roth they understood why it wasn't working. But folks where pissed off hard at Dickenson for walking away and Maiden for letting him walk. It made no sense, and ultimately Bailey was just collatoral damage. Also I dont think they where opposed to Punk, they just where not a part of it, and after D'ianno (who was pretty much a punk singer in a metal band) left, whatever that connection maiden had to punk was had gone.

I hate to admit it but I really like Paul Di'Anno’s vocals. Paul Di'Anno might just be my favorite Maiden vocalist. With that being said, Also enjoyed the X-Factor album sung by Blaze Bailey. He’s no Bruce Dickinson but the record has a really nice melodic sound that I find to be very well done. I didn’t care for the follow up album with Blaze Bailey but X-Factor was a good album that gets over looked because Bruce Dickinson was doing his solo career at the time. The first Eddie to appear on media was the menacing figure on the Running Free single, but the first painting Maiden and their management bought was Derek Riggs' "Electric Matthew Says Hello". When the band saw it, they insisted that Riggs add more hair as he looked too punk. Electric Matthew, now with more hair, became the cover of their first album. As Running Free was released before the album, this Eddie was the first to appear. The live albums "A Real Live One" and "A Real Dead One" were the last full covers Riggs painted for the band, as he says in his Martin Popoff-penned biography that he just got worn out cranking out Eddie after Eddie, trying to come up with new ideas that everyone liked. His art appeared on one final cover, as the spectral Eddie in the sky on "Brave New World". He quit the project, however, leaving the futuristic London to be painted by digital artist Steve Stone. Riggs himself has transitioned into digital art and continues to create new works full time.

Don't get me wrong, Steve has written some great, great Maiden songs. His bass playing goes without saying. Sill, Adrian wrote most of my fave maiden songs as well as the songs he co-wrote with Bruce. Lastly, it is fair to say that the stage is big enough for both of them and I understand both of their points. 1- The singer is the "front man." 2- Many people consider the bassist to be the guy hidden in the shadow back by the drum riser. Steve is here to say that doesn't necessarily apply to all bassists, especially him! :)

They have never been able to get it to sound right live; they tried it on both Somewhere on Tour and Somewhere Back in Time and it never made it past rehearsals on both occasions. It must be one of those songs that just can't be recreated outside of the studio (although The Iron Maidens play it live sometimes, got to see it last year and it was amazing!).

Some folks said they never played INVADERS ,live, the first and perhaps best BEAST song on THE NUMBER OF THE BEAST ! Also, they are rumored to have never played PRODIGAL SON live. I would love to have someone come forward with a live recording(bootleg) or soundboard and prove everyone wrong ! Oh well,.....

I hunted down what I believed to be the original photo that Derek Riggs used as inspiration for Eddie. I showed him and he couldn't say for sure if it was it, but he also couldn't say for sure it wasn't. He saw it on a propaganda poster but I found the original photo that was printed in Time Magazine during the war, and it was a Japanese soldiers decapitated and burnt head sitting on an army tank. According to the story, it was common practice in some parts of the war. Probably until it was photographed and printed. I posted it on the net years ago and I do see it pop up now and then, so it's out there.

'Bruce wanted to make an acoustic based album'. That would have been a cool one time thing....a la Zeppelin's 3rd album. Here's a fact (at least in my mind), best lineup was with D'iAnno and Burr.

I know the first 'fact' isn't a fact at all. Eddie didn't start out as a shadowy figure on the, Running Free single. Eddie started out as a mask that was secured on an Iron Maiden banner they hung above the drums during shows. To make things cooler they put a blood bag behind the mask, that they'd cut open during the show and blood would leak out of the front of the mask and fall all over the drummer, who didn't much care for that at all. 'You can all now be righteously suspicious of the other nine of these, "Facts"
