i've played 4:3 for the past 10 years, allow me to elaborate on a few things. 1: no pro says it's better - only that they prefer it (or atleast they should say that) 2: you forgot the change in recoil - by making things wider you make recoil wider (down side of 4:3) 3: things see to move faster on 4:3 left to right, but slower up / down 4: you state that peripheral view is important, i beg to differ - you should not be winning gun fights against ppl that are more then 30degrees to the right or left - you should have your croshair placement on or within the posible target location before needing to shoot. 5: it use to give higher fps in certain games - this made alot of ppl play that, and they stuck with it for years, the only reason being that they were comfy with this. 6: your horizontal / vertical sens changes proportional to your aspect ratio - meaning left right movement feels faster - so it comes more natural to most (this can be done by ofsetting sens in 16:9) aswell 7: Most important - ppl have to stop copying settings that work for others, if a pro runs 8:8/50 - 4:3 - 78fov - doesnt mean that you should, it means thats what works for him. find your own settings guys - no FOV / Aspect or Sens has made anyone pro - its never the mouse, the screen or the settings -

Keep in mind peripheral vision is not just about target acquisition in this game, there are also multiple traps and other objects of note that you may miss on a lower fov

great comment, i didnt know that it might be able to improve fps so i might try 4:3 for that as i average about 40-50 frames (not the worst but i like my fps as high as i can get it).

@@tox1c723 but you can, using viewmodel_fov you can change it from 54 to 68 degrees. It just isn't the 60-90 range we have in R6.

Hey Rogue-9, I know this video is roughly 2 years old, and so this comment will probably be lost, but if it is discovered, I found a problem with your methodology in this video. These findings aren't *necessarily* correct because you've forgotten to taken into consideration how your view changes when you ADS. The advantage between playing on 16:9 and 5:4 is far more noticeable when you ADS with an ACOG. The picture appearing more 'squished' becomes negligible when using the ACOG, because the ACOG provides the same magnification across all aspect ratios, but covers a greater area of the screen when using lower aspect ratios. I don't think this was intended by Ubisoft.

4:3 FOV 74. My thoughts are, yes with wider field of view you can see enemies that is to your hard left easier, but what is the chances of you managing to flick and get them? I woukd rather have an easier time locating enemies in front of me than to my sides

The main thing you use lower aspect ratios for is for the zoom of it with 1x sights. Aspect ratios only effect vertical "FOV". When you turn down your FOV, it also turns your vertical FOV down. To get a zoom for 1x sights, you just need horizontal so there is no reason to sacrifice the vertical FOV. It's only because of that vertical FOV difference that people use 4:3, 3:2, and 5:4

I can relate to the binocular thing. I'd use them properly and roam around the house and when I'd get bored I'd turn it around and see my room seemingly 10m away (even though it was less than 2 feet away from me). Oh, those were simpler times.

I can imagine that "squashing" everything vertically can help bringing everything closer to the middle of your screen because your vertical FOV should become larger when using the same horizontal FOV. Could be useful on maps like tower or in general when vertical play is used a lot. Also because everything is closer to the middle horizontal line of your monitor you eyes might be quicker on target. Heard in a video that faster eyetracking relates to quicker aim on target and I feel like it helped me playing better. To concentrate more on keeping my eye on the target. It feels sometimes as if my hand does the aiming more on autopilot and faster.

Insert Username Here Yeah technically you can change FOV without changing aspect ratio, but you need sv_cheats 1 enabled. So the only way to change your FOV on official servers/games is with aspect ratio.

I was using stretched 4:3 for some time. After I moved back to my screen's native resolution of 16:9 my performance improved considerably. Simple because the mouse movement on the stretched 4:3 does not match the movement of your hand. It is not a 1:1 correlation. If you draw a circle with your mouse, it will look like an oval on your screen. Although it is possible to set different values for the horizontal sensitivity and the vertical sensitivity. But I haven't messed around with that yet.

You can give it a try yourself. Draw a line 10 cm horizontally and 10 cm vertically on a piece of paper. Use your mouse to trace that while ingame. You will find that the vertical and horizontal distance moved isn't the same.

4:3 = less vram usage than 16:9, so, in theory, more frames. I say "in theory" because 16:9 with no extras vs 4:3 with everything maxed out winds up being more frames at 16:9

I’m late but low fov can cause motion sickness and personally 4:3 is basically small fov, but everybody should still either increase or decrease your fov never leave your fov on default.

The thing about playing 4:3 comes down to the fact that people used to play on CRT monitors (me included). I remember playing CS 1.6 on a 4:3 CRT monitor on Friday nights with my older brother, rushing B each round. It has stuck around, and it does give some what of an advantage, but it also comes with many disadvantages. Namely, if someone sees a lot of "pros" playing 4:3 on their 16:9 monitor, whilst they've never themselves used any other aspect ratio before, they're going to have troubles with readjusting their aim (taking that they've not taken the time to re-adjust their sensitivity to match the new aspect ratio setting). People switching from years of using and building up muscle memory and reflex skills on specific aspect ratio + resolution + fov + mouse sensitivity settings might at first experience the placebo effect (where you think you're doing better because of the new changes, but it's more than likely due to you now being hyper sensitive and focused due to the new settings). Once you get used to playing on the new settings, you will fall back on to your muscle memory, and if you've changed your settings too much from the norm, you're going to have a tough time readjusting. If you're actually thinking of going from whatever resolution + aspect ratio + fov + mouse sensitivity (and all other settings included that go into all of this that weren't mentioned in the video, such as mouse space, the type of mouse grip you've got + what mouse you're using, DPI settings, etc.) then the change should be done gradually. I personally made a 'big' leap from going from a 4:3 CRT to a 16:9 LCD many many years ago, and I stuck to using 4:3 for a little while until I started to gradually rescale all my games to 16:9. Now that I've switched to a 21:9 aspect ratio about a year or so ago, I still use 16:9 stretched in competitive games, and I run native 21:9 for that extra crispiness in non-competitive games. I've personally found that to be a good balance for me, and my setup, and I've retrained my muscle memory to match the settings. Going from 16:9 to 16:9 stretched to 21:9 isn't as big of a change as adding extra 5 units to the width of your gameplay (does increase field of view, but in a competitive game I like the balance of zoomed in 16:9, but it's stretched onto 21:9 for that cinematic effect). Overall, if you're used to 16:9 at 90 fov, and you're REALLY thinking of changing to something like 4:3, make sure you're doing the change gradually. It's like jumping into the pool on the deep end when you've barely learnt how to swim (a bit of an extreme metaphor to use, but it should get the point across).

But playing 4:3 on a 4:3 CRT screen is the same result as playing 16:9 on a 16:9 screen (with less peripheral vision). Those that played a lot on 4:3 CRT screen (like me) are not more used to 4:3 on a 16:9 screen than others. At all.

I never expected it to be because people get a "bigger target" but because during warmup it allowed you to get used to attacking targets despite a more obscure vision. Helping you do better when you actually switch back to the normal aspect ratio. But still it's gonna throw off your aim every darn time unless you keep switching between the two extremely frequently.

Rudolf Leahu siege fov works differently, 74fov in siege is 90fov in othergames where as 90 fov is about 120 in other games

Ricardo Gzz Other way around for me, I like 4:3 (sometimes 3:2) for R6 but I prefer 16:9 on CS I only have 70 hours on CS and am only a GN2 tho compared to plat on R6 though, so yeah

@@chocomint8261 4:3 reduces FoV in CSGO and it is objectively better once you have some map knowledge because there aren't so many angles to check.

One way to explain it, is that many 16:9 monitors are locked to 60 hertz refresh rate when in 1080p 16:9 but when you use resolutions such as 1024:768 in 4:3 you can refresh at 75 hertz. I play both CS and Rainbow, almost all CS players use 4:3 stretching the image to cover the black bars on the sides

Down200 imo, it makes 1x scopes more viable and makes me a better fragger. With my Ranked stack, I’m an entry frag so it makes my job easier if I’m running a Holo on 4:3 instead of an ACOG on 16:10. It all comes down to personal preference tbh. It has its drawbacks but also offers things other aspect ratios don’t.

Awsabol warrior Not entirely. People just swing faster so 1x scopes and fast reflexes are gonna be your friends when playing on 4:3.

Great video as usual! Can you make a video on the best sensitivity to get 1:1 ratio distance between ADS and hipfire in Siege? For example, in CS:GO, it is 0.81, while in Overwatch it is 38. Also, not sure if this is possible, but making a video on converting sensitivities between Siege and different games would be amazing (eg Overwatch to Siege, or cs:go to Siege or BF1 to siege).

I play 16:9 with a FOV of 90. I just want to have a beautiful game when i play. But i dont know what to do with the FOV. Should i decrease it?

The interest of having a big FOV and stretched AR is to provide larger opponents horizontally while having the same vertical height as a normal AR. At the end you have larger opponents but the vertical recoil (the one you have to manage) is the same as a 16:9 AR, and you get more spatial awareness than getting just a low fov. This is not just simply "it zooms less than low fov and it's ugly", there is a lot more to it, you can break the limitations of fov and get completly different feelings about your accuracy and recoil control. The other things is that it changes your "felt" sensitivity, you won't have the same on the two axis. Not a bad video by any means, but usually you dig more on the subject, there is a lot of things you simply skip in there... A lot of people are going to forget completly streched AR and not even search what it provides more and if it's not better for them (and I'm a 16:9 player, I've just tried a lot of things to get where I am). Keep the good work tho.

Actually there is more to fov and aspect ratio. Fov also changes movement speed (the rate the objects move on your screen not, not the actual character speed) and edge distortion (object stratching on edges and not on the center) . Higher fov gives finite understanding of object distance (for both depth and width) but also makes objects smaller. Aspect ratio gives you zoom (more or less peripheral view) , stretch and different horizontal/vertical sens *feel* (actual movement remains the same) One thing to mention is that zoom (in/out) will change the way you see recoil - more zoom equals to you trying harder do control the same gun and less zoom equals to you trying less hard to control the same gun (with the same results btw) Now I am an odd player.. I play on 19/10 86 fov it gives me peripheral view equal to 16/9 90, less distortion and a more comfortable (for me) depth understanding. Hope I helped some of you and remember that zoom out (19/10) + less fov can be extremely good (imo)

The only benefit of 4:3 is greater vertical peripheral vision bang-for-buck. I think it's helpful for sure. You don't need much vertical resolution, so to speak, since targets are mostly vertical, so the extra vertical fov is worth it (since there's so much verticality in siege)

have you considered that with a larger aspect ratio such as 4:3 you retain your vertical fov while sacrificing some horizontal fov in order to gain more zoom (dont know how that would be any good), But by doing this any motion from side to side on the screen will be exagerated as well which could maybe allow to better track moving targets? (i guess?)

Great video needless to say. One thing i would like to add is that changing the aspect ratio off of native causes fps drops for many players. Obviously that depends on what settings they have in the graphics as well as what rig they have. But if your computer can handle it, changing the aspect ratio and fov to suit your style is honestly an amazing addition to your gameplay.

Aspect ratio and FOV is all personal preference. However many tests you do doesn't prove which ratio or FOV is better. All just total preference.

4:3 is used because the render system used by the game doesnt scale it properly. Also the vertical height doesn't matter because of how recoil works so 4:3 is used simply because in pro league lots of people run holo sights because its only day maps and 4:3 is like running a low fps but due to how the scaling bugs you dont feel as boxed in though you shouldnt run below 90fov on 4:3

Lots of players swear on 4:3, in the end it should come down to personal preference. I have only played 16:9 so far, might give 4:3 and some other ratios a shot and see how they work out.

It isnt actually personal preference. 4:3 does legitimately give you larger hitboxes to aim at (due to stretching models and so hitboxes). It's an incredibly minor thing, but if you're dead set on maximum advantage you play on 4:3.

I had a brainfart as I forgot to mention lowering the resolution, which is an integral part of the idea (pros play on very low resolutions), the lower resolutions cause rounding of pixel sizes (unless you play with post proc) and while I dont know if r6 is the same way on CS at least if you hit a pixel you hit the hitbox. Though like I said this difference is tiny. There is another way that changing the aspect ratio and lowering the resolution mechanically increases the size of hitboxes, at least in CS, but I cant remember it right now, it's more pronounced than the rounding thing but still basically meaningless for anything other than a pro. I think it might be due to upscaling (ie a 480x360 rendered game played on 1280x720 has each pixel quaded if you can still address individual displayed pixels through the upscaling mechanism. If I remember it I will link to the video where I saw it.

No. It does. At least source and GldSrc, though other engines might work differently. The hitbox takes up X pixels on your screen, as long as you address a valid pixel when you project your hitscan it hits, even if that specific coordinate might not be a hit on other resolution, because you can only reference by pixels. So, say, a 12 pixel target at 1280 will be .9% of your screen, that same target rendered at 480 will be 5 pixels, so 1% of your screen. Like I said so minor it basically doesnt matter but still something people will try to exploit. I wish I could remember the other one. Fucking annoys me that I cant. Thought it was a klicks video but guess not.

The server does not see hitboxes as any larger when using a stretched resolution, your computer doesn't even see it like that, only your monitor and gpu see the model as stretched, so in a way yes the hitboxes are larger but only visually.

Reminder___ .... What? How is it not a "highly skilled game"? Just because you can't run around the map jumping around every corner 360 quick scoping doesn't mean it isn't skilled. It's currently the most tactical shooter on the market. It requires heavy coordination, heavy map knowledge, aim still matters, knowledge of each operator and what they do, knowing how to properly drone and when to drone, extreme patience under pressure... All of these things are skills.

CS:GO player here, literally just a fad. Most likely CS:GO players moving to R6S and just going with what they're used to. Which is funny, most people who do that started with 1.6 or CS:S. Guess some people just can't forget about the past.

I'm all about that 21:9 aspect ratio. The naturally high FOV with a smaller height makes it easier to target enemies and I still get a large peripheral view.
