Insane how powerful these late WWII tanks were for their time. IS-7 and Tiger II
@ussindianapolis487
@ussindianapolis487 6 месяцев назад
you cant really compare them. tiger 2 was a heavy, slow, heavily armored vehicle with a powerful gun but it was horribly unreliable and its armor quality was awful. is7 on the other hand was everything that tiger 2 was but better. it was impenetrable from the front, the gun could go clean through any tank, its speed meant that it could run circles around most of the armored vehicles. its reliability was very good for a vehicle that heavy. the comfort of using the tank was on par with american and german tanks. overall, is7 would destroy the tiger before it would even know it was being fired upon. and even if the tiger managed to score a hit the is7 would simply shrug it off as if it was a mosquito bite.

not exactly, even the opposite. If you get closer the shell has less travel time and cant pick up maximum speed for it to be effective. Its not like World of Tanks or War Thunder. Physics still exist irl. You need to be close at 900 meters to be more effective and also the shell hit the target incorrectly. The height of the tank with the shell travel distance would be more straighten than shown in this clip. Which is a result of favoritism towards Nazi Equipment. Also lets not forget that the quality of steel back in those days wasnt up to our standards like the simulation suggests.

One simulation I've been interested in is whether or not tracks links covering/stored on angled armour, that normally would ricochet APCR, possibly enable penetration? Love your videos! Not sure on specifics for shell type/range/tanks involved, but maybe some people have some ideas. Its a meme I've heard floating around War thunder community with how poor APCR performs against angles that you'd figure anything that would help it from deflecting like soft metal tracks or composite rubber, would help it.
@belgianfried
@belgianfried 6 месяцев назад
Likely, if the APCR uses a proper capped penetrator (some material above the tungsten shot) then it will be less affected. In a normal case (penetrator has only a ballistic cap) it will disperse most of its energy on rubber or spare tracks
@AsthmaQueen
@AsthmaQueen 6 месяцев назад
@@belgianfried yeah this is true some apcr isn't capped though so maybe one of those would be interesting to see if stuff like the concrete armour or other softer things like tracks could help prevent ricochet
@signs80
@signs80 2 дня назад
@@AsthmaQueen APCR is not bad against angles because it ricochets, but rather it ricochets because it's bad at dealing with angles. APCR used tungsten carbide and it fractures upon hitting just about anything hard with sufficient thickness. Once it hits the track it would likely fracture before impacting the armor underneath instead of during, which would reduce penetration

I can’t wait for the sound update! On a more serious note, could you perhaps have a sped-up clip of the shell hitting the armour at normal time speed, or put a millisecond timescale somewhere that isn’t in the way of the rest of the video? I think it would certainly be cool to see.

@czwarty7878
@czwarty7878 6 месяцев назад
Not really. The case of "cracking german armor of late war" is very overblown. It would crack under sustained fire of multiple hits, not one strong hit, so it rather wouldn't affect cases like this one. Interestingly, when digging deeper into studies on quality of german armor, you can find for example that british armor throughout the war had just as high and possibly even higher quality differences between different productions. But nobody says about Matilda or Churchill "oh yeah they had strong armor but because of lower quality they would crack".

Looking at how the projectile bounce on the plate i am thinking, if sloped armour is actualy better than its effective thickness sugest. Could you make a comparation between in this example 150mm plate at 50deg vs equivalet that is 233mm at 0 deg? I got a feeling that this projectile would actualy penetrate a straight plate.
@jonathanowen8389
@jonathanowen8389 6 месяцев назад
Yes protection offered is greater than shown by LOS thickness, unlike WOT nonsense. Although HEAT and modern rounds do more or less follow LOS. Rough estimate can be made using T=150 divided by (cos50^n). Where T is the equivalent thickness of a flat plate. When n is between 1 and 2 depending on projectile geometry and material quality. Probably n is about 1.4 in this case. This means that in theory T or 150mm/50deg is equal to 278mm flat plate. However, this does not take into account T/D ratios or plate quality etc. Thought you might find this of interest.

No, a shell that flat and slow (when compared to APFSDS) would have worse performence than an equivalent speed shell that has a point. Its like trying to dig up dirt with a sledgehammer, vs a shovel. @@czwarty7878 The photo I referenced is a TII with a single frontal hit and penetration. I am not talking about range firing where hulks were subject to multiple overlapping hits. Thus a single photo categorically refutes the claim there are no examples of a TII with a hull frontal penetration. When informed of this Panzerwrecks photo you immediately try and discredit it and use the cascading list of excuses always used when a Tiger myth is challenged. That mreans as soon as your latest 'excuse' is disproved you default to the next excuse and if that is also challenged you default to the next excuse on your list. Its never-ending because you will NEVER accept anything that you dont want to believe. Are you going to claim a photo you obviously know nothing about (despite it being published some 10 years back) is a fake without seeing it?

as far as I know, bullet-shaped projectiles with spin stabilization have a center of pressure forward of the center of gravity and significant rotational energy. thus a falling projectile would likely show projectile/velocity vector misalignment. which is not visually the case in the model to me. TLDR a bullet doesn't align with its flight path like arrows or APFSDS.@@Gracefulwarrior2124

One thing omited is wery bad composition of late war german steels. Thats one of the main reasons of bad relaibility of german tanks. Cracking of drive spockets, gears, springs, reports of armour plate cracking or being just burst opened that whoud be on paper superior.

Tiger II MAYBE could penetrate it from the side on the turret top, just between the flat roof and the turret sidewall where it's the thinnest. The roof should almost deflect the energy of the round downwards (or straight, the side armor would most definitely cause the round to gain an upward angled bias as it deflects up, but the high speed of the 88mm could go deep enough to perhaps cause almost a trap shot)

Does this take into account quality of armor as late war it got worse and worse for obvious reasons.
@neurofiedyamato8763
@neurofiedyamato8763 6 месяцев назад
There's no qualitative definition of late-war German armor because material quality varies. it's not some all across the board drop. Some plates got substitute material, some did not or had used different substitute material. However we do know what the Germans was SUPPOSED to use. Regardless, usually plates just got more brittle, so it has worse multi-hit capabilities. It should still resist the first hit.
@LTSarcasm
@LTSarcasm 6 месяцев назад
@@neurofiedyamato8763 Brittleness effects the first plate as well, as you can see here with the tremendous amount of flexing the steel got. And if you want to go by what they should get - that's fair. But Dejmian also models soviet shells as super soft and easily broken (see this vid as a good example) based on a single report of a soft batch of soviet shells.

@czwarty7878
@czwarty7878 6 месяцев назад
@@xddxdd8698 this case is not about caliber but shell weight and velocity. D-25T is different type of gun (medium velocity dual-purpose gun) from KwK43 (high velocity dedicated AT gun). For better comparison of this topic in caliber would serve the German 12.8cm PaK44 gun - there you have increased caliber with similar level of velocity to 8.8cm PaK43, and the penetration raises proportionally. Caliber helps, as long as velocity is retained.
