I prefer the old style flip up handles - it’s a whole lot easier cooking over a campfire as the handle creates a third point of contact with the ground (much more stable) and the slit in the handle is designed to give you the ability to insert a stick or your knife and pick it up (the handle gets hot in a fire).

Nice! I appreciate the fair review! I was going for the larger mouth of the titanium and was ready to purchase solely for that reason! But now that i know that theres another thats cheaper! I will be buying that one! I can definitely see why the titanium would be better! If I was climbing Mt Everest Id want the lightest gear i could find lol! Thanks again!

Honestly, if a person is constantly outdoors during their off time and wants to save as much weight as possible; the titanium set-up is going to be worth it.... to them. If such a canteen set is only occasionally used by someone once in a awhile who mainly likes to camp in one spot when they do go out, then the $50.oo set-up is going to make more sense for that type of individual. Personally, I like to split the difference. 32 oz. Nalgene Oasis canteen combined with a Ti mess kit consisting of a canteen cup, a shallower Ti cup, with Ti lid. Toss in a decent aftermarket carrier for all of that, we're talking closer to $100.oo (yes, the canteen is high-grade plastic, but you still have two cups and a lid for boiling water).

I use Smart Water Bottles , recycle when back home and get a new set for the next trip. The Titanium Canteen Cup , I really do like it. Easy to use , cleans in a flash and cools really quickly when empty and is food friendly , does not add or subtract to the flavor of items. Squeeze the handle together till they click and they will stay that way till you separate them. .

Nice review, Ernie. In regards to the canteen cup, yes I agree that the design is superior. ** However, that exact design of locking handles and cup shape was invented decades ago. That engineering can be seen in the USGI Canteen Cup. Just thought you would like to know.

I've been looking at this cook kit for a long time. It's just so expensive haha. I think I might be leaning towards the SS pathfinder setup because its 1/3 the price. Thanks for the information, I like your channel !

I'm a titanium fetishist. I've spent so money on and amassed quite a number of titanium products. I've used this product to every end. I've gotten my money's worth over the years. I've never had a better canteen mess kit. Although, for the cost, there now is one. It comes with two nesting pots, a lid, and a 34oz canteen all in a nylon pouch. The only reason I haven't bought it? I own this one. I feel like I'm maximally invested and can make do. However, I already know that I'm going to crumble and buy the new version too.

Really helpful review. Good merits to the Titanium. Weight comparison was good but both the canteen and the cup of the Pathfinder has more capacity. I like the handle of the Pathfinder better due to the 3 pt stability. I do not drink from my canteen up but rather poor into another vessel like a Kupilka cup. I also like the measurement marking in the Pathfinder. Would much rather melt snow in the Pathfinder canteen due to the wide mouth.

Not sure if it's _actually_ worth the money because the water itself is heavy but it sure looks cool and it will probably last many, many years. It's the kind of thing that you find an excuse to buy :)

G'day Ernie, firstly thanks for another great video. Regarding the Steripen and canteen's, I am in the (Australian) military and have both the traditional plastic (rubbish) canteens and some of the Mil-tech Tritan canteens, same as the Nalgene Oasis. The rubber tapered bit of the steripen just above the glass section actually fits really snug into the canteen mouth. You can fit the steripen, invert the canteen and swirl it around to disinfect your water, it works great. That wouldn't work with the pathfinder canteen though you have already stated the steripen will fit inside the wide mouth. I don't know if it would fit in the titanium canteen, I would be interested to find out. Thank you and best wishes.

For me, it's worth it. It is an expense but if you consider it's going to last a long time, the days, weeks, months and eventually years you end up using it the weight saving value will pay off. An old GI one from a surplus store is probably the best value budget option however.

So I have been thinking about picking one of these up for a while I pulled the trigger on it and it's great the only thing that is weird is there an internal lip that stops the last bit of water from coming out like the neck of the canteen comes down past it's shoulders by almost a centimetre you can feel it with you finger (by feeling the inside the bottleneck, the very bottom part) , does yours have that or is mine a lemon? Keep up the good work

The only reason stainless would distribute heat more evenly is if the stainless has more mass. Otherwise they are about the same. Stainless is lousy for cooking unless mass is added to the bottom, especially a metal like aluminum or copper.

Prepper stuff. Made for carrying in cargo pocket pants. Military style cookware is pretty inefficient for use with an alcohol stove due to the narrow base, which makes it less stable if you go stoveless, using rocks as a pot stand with a cooking fire or Esbit tabs. A single walled, screw top, large water bottle is the most versatile piece of kit for minimalist/survival use (though not any more stable). For rehydrating freeze dried food in a pouch, carrying water, sterilizing it in a campfire, it can't be beat. It also makes a great leak-proof hot water bottle for cold weather sleeping. Paired with a titanium cup, it's an awesome, complete system for Esbit tabs or a butane stove (campfire or coffee can hobo stove, too). Not good for frying food, or use with an alcohol stove (wastes too much heat). My Klean Kanteen 40 oz. stainless steel bottle fits perfectly in my Snow Peak 700ml cup. Now, if they only made the water bottle in titanium.🤔

My wife would kill me if i spent that much on a canteen. I have as a lightweight solution the VDV paratroop canteen set and the Yugoslavian army canteen set. As tough gear i use an M-1910 replica stainless steel canteen cup set. And at work a Nalgene bottle with nesting cup. For more cooking action with the family the billy can or Czech army mess kit stainless steel. My hiking kit is never ultralight.

i've got from aliexpress for almost 1/4 the price of titanium set a stainless steel one which includes the canteen with the exact butterfly handheld, a lid for canteen with holes in it for letting the steam out (the titanium one doesn't have) , a stove and the cup and a textile pack for this set with a molle system to attach on backpack. all this set is about 40 bucks where the titanium set is 170 bucks. Let's be honest, for 300 grams you save a lot of money and to carry 300 grams in plus it's not that a big deal.
@baszt

Rhetorical Answer how can you be sure that the SS that you buy from other countries isn’t in fact produced in China? I think a big part of them are from China and sold under “non chinese name” brands in other countries. The canteen that I bought is from a company that makes also titanium products and I somehow trust it, Jolmo Lander is the brand. It seems alright what they make.

I have also wanted one of these for a very long time, but I just can't do it. Too expensive.. If I'm taking a canteen it would be for a bushcrafting or in the winter where there's not much hiking. I don't look at weights then, I just carry everything in. That's how I got the name "PackMule". I always have the Toaks titanium pot for hiking if I do go lightweight. Saying all that I would still love to have one of these.

Heres why the weight argument doesnt make sense to me. When empty, the titanium only weighs 48.6% of the steel. That's a 51.4% weight reduction- very impressive! But wait... When filled with 1.1L of water (approx 3,785g), the titanium weighs 3,945g, compared to the steel at 4,114g. That means the titanium only weighs 95.89% of the steel. Is the extra hundred dollars worth saving 4.11% of the weight of steel? I would argue no. That weight savings gap closes real fast when they're full.

I have had my Keith canteen set for a year now and I have almost been using it on a daily basis. This is my first experience with titanium. Pros: it's so great to have that lightweight on the hikes and as a general multi-purpose carry-on water bottle. Cons: it came out of the package with strong metallic taste I had to get rid of with hot sodium bicarbonate soak and wash. In comparison with steel I am not 100% convinced about the durability regards to resistance of long-term abuse. I absolutely love the carry-on system but I also feel like babysitting the whole kit at the same time. Still, the experience has been positive overall. Can you guys recommend a brush to clean the canteen bottle from the inside?

I bought the 1.2L Keith Titanium water bottle, the Ti3208 cup, and their small tea infuser. I sent back the latter two, because they arrived in 2nd hand condition and were flawed. But even after sending out emails to all three global offices, I have yet to receive a financial return on the items I sent back to their EU hq in Paris, even six months later! I recommend to avoid Keith Titanium, as tempting as their pricing may be.

You're an overly wordy idiot. You're telling a "woe is me" story and nobody cares because you're a loser. You know how we know you're a loser? You're losing. You say that their pricing is tempting? It's four times more expensive than buying factory direct. You say you still haven't gotten your money back and you returned the product? That means you didn't contact the company first to figure out how to go about the return. Once again, you're an idiot and no matter how many words you use or how you say it, you're providing all the evidence.
